http://perso.wanadoo.fr/oroncefine/ecole/oroncef.htm

The cordiform World maps by Oronce Fine
Geography and its scientific basis. an astrolabe modified by adding a compass. He went from theory to practice by publishing mainly a map of France and two World maps for which he tried to get the largest possible number of geographic coordinates. In that way he completed and corrected the information transmitted by Ptolemy. He also tested several cartographic projections. In 1531 he produced a first World map in bicordiform, while his map of 1534 to 1536 is a cordiform projection as was Apian's map published in Ingolstadt (Bavaria) in 1530. In the field of geography, Oronce Fine tried to combine the medieval information on eastern countries with the results of the Great Discoveries. In the northern part of the cordiform World map he wrote the name Asia on each side of the central meridian to cover both present-day North America and Asia which were represented as one continent. The name America was reserved for South America. As a consequence, Marco Polo's Mangi, Tangut

40. Clock And Watch
oronce fine, Shipshaped sundial. Armillary Sphere, signed by Gualterus Arsenius. oronce fine (Sixteenth century) Donated by Piero Portaluppi, 1978.
http://www.museopoldipezzoli.it/PP_inglese/museo/collezioni/orologi/orologi.htm
The important Clock and Watch Collection is one of the most complete collections of its kind in Italy.
With the exception of few pieces that belonged to the original collection of Gian Giacomo Poldi Pezzoli, it was mainly assembled in recent times.
Indeed, the core event that determined its formation took place in 1973, when Bruno Falck bestowed to the museum one hundred twenty-nine timepieces made between the 12th and 19th centuries.
Alongside a number of mechanical watches from the Renaissance and the Baroque epochs, the Falck donation includes clocks decorated with polychrome enamels, 'carriage clocks' and form-watches, in addition to the well-known 'Carriage of Diana' with mechanical figures, a German work of the early 17th century.
In 1978 the museum collection was enriched with over two hundred sundials donated by their former owner Pier Portaluppi (1888-1967), now displayed in the Palma room on the first floor of the museum.
This collection, besides being of primary importance, is particularly interesting because through the observation of these sundials the viewer can discern most of their gnomic mechanism.
Among the finest objects of the collection are two ivory sundials, the Nuremberg diptych sundial dated 1602 and a ship-shaped sundial, dated 1524.
