Biographical Notes
Bayes was a non-conformist minister in England. A version of what is now known as Bayes’ theorem was used in his paper "Essay towards solving a problem in the doctrine of chances," published in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London in 1764.
James Bernoulli was the first of the famous Bernoulli family of Swiss mathematicians. He wrote one of the early books devoted to probability, Ars Conjectandi , which was published after his death in 1713. Bernoulli formulated the version of the law of large numbers for independent trials, now called Bernoulli trials, and studied the binomial distribution.
Buffon was the director of the Paris Jardin du Roi and was best known during his time for his thirty-six volume work on natural history. Buffon's famous coin and needle problems are considered to be among the first problems in geometric probability.
Cardano, who lived in Italy, was a man of many interests: law, medicine, astrology, gambling, and mathematics. His book Liber de Ludo Aleae (The Book on Games of Chance), published after his death in 1663, contained perhaps the first mathematical analysis of gambling.

The Fisher F Distribution
Java Applet Simulation of the Fisher F experiment In this section we will study a distribution that has special importance in statistics. In particular, this distribution arises form ratios of sums of squares when sampling from a normal distribution.
The Fisher F Density
Suppose that U has the chi-square distribution with m degrees of freedom, V has the chi-square distribution with n degrees of freedom, and that U and V are independent . Show that has the density function The distribution defined by the density function in Exercise 1 is known as the F distribution with m degrees of freedom in the numerator and n degrees of freedom in the denominator. The F distribution is named in honor of Sir Ronald Fisher
Simulation
The applet for this page simulates a random variable with an F distribution. The graph of the density function is shown in blue. The mean and standard deviation are recorded in the first table and shown graphically in terms of the horizontal blue bar, which is centered at the mean and extends one standard deviation on either side. You can vary the parameters m and n with scroll bars. When you run the experiment, independent values from the distribution are generated and recorded in the second table. The

SOPHUS LIE A reception was held on 29 May 2002 at the splendid Residence in Palace Green, London W8 of the Royal Norwegian Ambassador and Mrs Brautaset at which Arild Stubhaug spoke about the life of Sophus Lie and about his biography, ‘the Mathematician Sophus Lie: It was the Audacity of my Thinking’ (published by Springer). Several members and staff of the LMS were invited and had the pleasure of hearing a speech of welcome from the Ambassador as well as Arild Stubhaug’s fascinating address. J.T. Stuart President FURTHER MATHEMATICS: USE IT OR LOSE IT There was a time when anyone who wanted to read mathematics at university was expected to take double Mathematics at A-level. Nowadays, hardly any departments require it. Most couldn't fill their places if they did. Even if they could, it would mean excluding any student who had attended one of the many schools and colleges that no longer teach Further Mathematics. Most of us would still prefer our first year students to have taken Further Mathematics, even if we can't count on it in designing our courses. But it's under pressure from many directions. Nationally, there are problems like the funding system for FE Colleges and the new entrance requirements of medical schools. At local level, students have to be convinced that it is worth taking, and Heads have to be convinced that it is worth putting on. There are still a lot of teachers who are keen to teach Further Mathematics, and they need some support. You'd have thought it was obvious that we'd prefer students to have taken double mathematics, but if we don't keep saying so, those in charge will assume that we don't really care one way or the other. And we mustn't let our concern not to put off those students who are taking only single Mathematics be interpreted as meaning that we don't think they're missing anything.

    Eugenics
    Past, Present and Future
    Richard Lynn
During the last century there has been a complete turnabout in public attitudes to eugenics.  In the first two thirds of the twentieth century, most scientists and social scientists supported eugenics.  In the United States, advocates of eugenics included the Nobel Prize winning scientists Herman Muller, Linus Pauling, Joshua Lederberg and William Shockley, and leading psychologists Edward Thorndike, Lewis Terman and William McDougall.  Many prominent public figures also supported eugenics, including President Theodore Roosevelt, Charles Wilson, president of Harvard, Irving Fisher, president of Yale, David Starr Jordan, president of Stanford University, and Oliver Wendell Holmes, Associate Justice of the U. S. Supreme Court. The European scientific community widely supported Eugenics throughout the early 20 th century.   In Britain, supporters of eugenics included the philosopher Bertrand Russell; geneticists Sir Ronald Fisher and Sir Julian Huxley; psychologists Charles Spearman and Sir Cyril Burt; economists John Maynard Keynes and Sir William Beveridge; Fabian socialists Sidney and Beatrice Webb; writers H. G. Wells and George Bernard Shaw; and politicians Arthur Balfour and Winston Churchill.  In France, the Nobel Prize winner Alexis Carrell was a keen supporter of eugenics, and in Scandinavia and Germany eugenics had many supporters. The tide of opinion began to turn against eugenics during the 1960’s.  In 1969 the American Eugenics Society ended publication of its journal

Fisher graduated from the University of Cambridge in 1912. In 1919 he became statistician for the Rothamsted Experimental Station near Harpenden, Hertfordshire, and did statistical work associated with the plant-breeding experiments there. At Rothamsted he developed the analysis of variance, a technique for varying different factors in an experiment and determining the probability of their causing different experimental results. His Statistical Methods for Research Workers (1925) remained in print for more than 50 years. His breeding experiments led to theories about gene dominance and fitness, published in

Asteroid 21451 Fisher was discovered on April 28, 1998, at Prescott, Arizona, USA by Paul G. Comba, who named it for distinguished British statistician Sir Ronald Aylmer Fisher(1890-1962). Asteroid Fisher has a period of 3 years, 161 days. Ronald Fisher Astrologically, Fisher seems to relate to investigation, persecution, looking restlessly or "trolling" for something, evangelism, recruitment, taking it easy or not working for a living, possibly concern with fishing or statistics. Bob Dylan, whose reinventions of himself and his musical style are myriad and legendary, has Fisher parallel the Moon(the public, women), semisquare Mercury(writings), parallel Chiron(ingenuity, to teach or invent), nonile South Node(past conditioning), quincunx the Part of Fortune(success, life's unfoldment), conjunct Black Moon(wild, unpredictable), parallel Pandora(to have an impact, unforeseeable consequences, cascading events), and contraparallel Lacrimosa("singing the blues"). Joseph McCarthy, who started the 1950s witch-hunt against Communists, other leftists, liberals and pacifists known as the Red Scare, had Fisher in the seventh house of open enemies, biseptile the Moon, conjunct the Sun(to shine), semisextile Mars(aggression, militarism), quadraundecimal Saturn(career, consequences), septile Uranus(the political left), undecimal Vesta(commitment), semisquare Part of Fortune and the Vertex(significant relationships), semisextile Hidalgo(to push one's agenda), opposite Pittsburghia(seriousness, inner depths), conjunct Sherlock(to nose things out), and contraparallel Volta(to galvanize).
