THE PARADOXES OF SET THEORY Phillip E. Johnson Department of Mathematics UNC Charlotte Charlotte, NC 28223-0001 Georg Cantor created and largely developed set theory in approximately the latter quarter of the nineteenth century. Hardly had his work been completed before paradoxes began to appear. The first of the modern paradoxes was published by the Italian mathematician Cesare Burali-Forti (Burali-Forti, 1897, pp. 157-164) in the same year in which Cantor's last set-theoretical paper was published, 1897. The Burali-Forti paradox was apparently discovered earlier by Cantor himself (Fraenkel, 1930, p. 261). A paradox markedly similar to the Burali-Forti paradox is the Cantor paradox of 1899 (published posthumously in 1932) concerned with cardinal numbers (Fraenkel, 1930, p. 261). The Burali-Forti paradox was concerned with ordinal numbers. Since more readers are familiar with cardinal numbers than with ordinal numbers, the Cantor paradox will be stated. Consider the cardinal number of the set of all sets. Clearly this is the greatest possible cardinal number. But by a standard theorem of intuitive set theory, the set of all subsets of a set has a greater cardinal number then the set itself. Therefore, the cardinal number of the set of all subsets of the set of all sets is greater than the greatest possible cardinal number, an obvious contradiction. Whereas the Burali-Forti and Cantor paradoxes involve results of set theory, Bertrand Russell discovered in 1902 a paradox based on just the concept of set itself. The result was also discovered independently by Ernst Zermelo (Fraenkel and Bar-Hillel, 1958, p. 6). The paradox comes about by considering the set of all sets which have the property of not being members of themselves. For example, the set of all men is not a man, whereas the set of all sets is a set.

Über uns Biographie Albert Fraenkel Internist Die ehrende Bezeichnung "er war ein großer Arzt" trifft auf Albert Fraenkel ohne Einschränkung zu. Das Fraenkelufer in Berlin-Kreuzberg unweit des städtischen Krankenhauses "Am Urban", das fast ein viertel Jahrhundert Stätte von Fraenkels segensreichen Wirken war, erinnert an diesen bedeutenden Berliner Arzt und Forscher. Eine nach seinem Tod vor dem Krankenhaus aufgestellte Büste ist 1933 von den Nationalsozialisten beseitigt und zerstört worden, und bis heute leider nicht als Reproduktion wieder aufgestellt worden. Fraenkel ging mit einer Entdeckung in die Medizingeschichte ein: Er fand im Jahre 1884 den Erreger der Lungenentzündung ("Fraenkel´scher Bazillus"). Im Jahre 1887 übernahm Albert Fraenkel die Leitung der Frauen-Siechenanstalt in Berlin-Kreuzberg und zugleich eine Privatklinik im demselben Stadtbezirk. Als 1890 das dritte städtische Krankenhaus in Berlin eröffnet wurde, das Krankenhaus "Am Urban", wählte man Fraenkel zum Leitenden Arzt der Inneren Abteilung und zu einem der beiden Direktoren, während zum 2. Direktor der Chirurg Werner Körte [1853-1937] gewählt wurde. In den fast 25 Jahren seiner Tätigkeit hat sich Fraenkel um die Entwicklung und den Ausbau des Krankenhauses sehr verdient gemacht. Vor allem der hohe Hygienestandard und der Pflegedienst an diesem Haus waren mustergültig, wie es von behördlicher Stelle hieß; das war zu dieser Zeit keineswegs überall so.

Click on the Image for more information about Adolf Fraenkel Fraenkel made two attempts, in 1922 and 1925, to put set theory into an axiomatic setting that avoided the paradoxes. He tried to improve the definitions of Zermelo and, within his axiom system, he proved the independence of the axiom of choice. His system of axioms was modified by Skolem in 1922 to give what is today known as the ZFS system. This is named after Zermelo, Fraenkel and Skolem. Within this system it is harder to prove the independence of the axiom of choice and this was not achieved until the work of Cohen in 1963.

Köln 1974.] , der einerseits einen Normenbezug in seinen Entscheidungen zuließ und andererseits Normen und Institutionen durch Maßnahmen außer Kraft setzen konnte. Sein ehemaliger Kriegskamerad Reichwein erfuhr an seiner eigenen Person, was dieser „Doppelstaat" in der Realität bedeuten sollte. Zum Sommersemester 1918 hatte Reichwein, der Lehrersohn aus Ober-Rosbach im Taunus, mit einem „leisen Grauen" die „heiligen Hallen" der Wissenschaft betreten, nachdem er bereits aus dem Lazarett heraus sein Studium aufgenommen hatte. Früh heiratete er eine Kommilitonin, die er aus der bündischen Jugend kannte. Bereits 1921 wurde Reichwein promoviert, damals 23 Jahre alt. In seiner Studienzeit begründete er manche Freundschaft, die über Jahre hielt. Und zugleich wurde deutlich, daß es ihn in die Praxis zog, in den Kreis überschaubarer Verhältnisse, die umfassend zu gestalten waren. Er engagierte sich in der folgenden Zeit ganz stark in der Erwachsenenbildung, die gerade in der Weimarer Zeit aufblühte.

Geburtstag – liegen nun die ersten Bände von Ernst Fraenkels Gesammelten Schriften vor; nur wenige Wissenschaftler werden so kurz nach ihrem Ableben in den Stand von Klassikern erhoben. Tatsächlich war Fraenkel nicht nur einer der bedeutendsten Politikwissenschaftler im 20. Jahrhundert, sondern er hat in mehrerlei Hinsicht auch die historische Forschung wesentlich geprägt. Davon zeugen die vier bereits vorliegenden Bände der Edition, die hier primär in Bezug auf ihre Relevanz für die Geschichtswissenschaft besprochen werden. Die noch ausstehenden Bände befassen sich mit Theorie und Verfassung des Pluralismus (Bd. 5) sowie Internationale Politik, Völkerrecht und Abhandlungen zur Politikwissenschaft (Bd. 6) und werden durch einen Registerband (Bd. 7) abgerundet. Bei Fraenkel ist der Wert einer Schriften-Ausgabe besonders groß, da er wesentliche Teile seines Oeuvres nicht in Monographien, sondern in Aufsätzen und Zeitungsartikeln niederlegte. Viele dieser Studien sind nur schwer zugänglich und wenig bekannt. In seinem bewegten Leben publizierte Fraenkel zudem zeitweise anonym. Manche seiner politischen Analysen, etwa aus dem Exil, wurden bisher gar nicht veröffentlicht, andere noch nie in Europa. Die vorliegende Edition strebt zwar keine Vollständigkeit an, im Rahmen des siebenbändigen Projekts kann sich Fraenkels Werk jedoch ganz entfalten. Während die Bände insgesamt thematisch gegliedert sind, ist jeder einzelne Band chronologisch aufgebaut und enthält eine längere Einführung des jeweiligen Herausgebers.

Ekkor kezd matematik¡val foglalkozni ©s publik¡lni. 1881-ben m¡r matematik¡b³l doktor¡l Budapesten. R¶videsen mag¡ntan¡r lesz ugyanott komplex f¼ggv©nytanb³l. 1887-ben ker¼lt a kolozsv¡ri egyetem elm©leti fizikai tansz©k©re, ahol 28 ©vig tan­tott. Nagy szerepe volt abban, hogy a term©szettudom¡nyi kar eur³pai sz­nvonalra emelkedett. 1892-ben a padovai egyetem d­szdoktor¡v¡ v¡lasztotta. 1898-ban az MTA levelező, 1914-ben rendes tagja lett.

Detaljeret om indholdet i enkelte mapper Overordnet beskrivelse af samlingen Kort beskrivelse: Denne samling af Jakob Nielsens papirer består for størstedelen af særtryk, som Nielsen har modtaget fra andre videnskabsfolk og sorteret efter forfatter. Udover særtrykkene er der i forbindelse med nogle af personerne breve, manuskripter, ansøgninger og andet. Alt materiale er fra ca. 1890-1959 og på en lang række sprog hvad angår særtrykkene. Det øvrige materiale er dog fortrinsvis på dansk eller tysk. Omfang: Samlingen omfatter 79 arkivkasser, hvoraf de første 25 er almindelige arkivkasser og resten er Nielsens originale kasser. Overdragelse: Samlingen befandt sig i Matematisk biblioteks kælder i E-bygningen på H. C. Ørsted Institutet i efteråret 1996. Det vides ikke, hvornår eller hvordan den er kommet der. I juli 1999 blev der tilføjet fotokopier af materiale fra Staatsarchiv Hamburg til box 10 Klausuler: Ingen.

Details about the content of some of the folders General, short description of the collection A short description: This collection of Jakob Nielsen papers consists mainly of reprints, which Nielsen has received from other scientists and sorted by authors. In addition to the reprints there is other material from some of the persons, i.e. letters, manuscripts, applications for positions etc. All the material is from the period around 1890-1959 and the reprints are in many different languages. However, the additional material is mainly in Danish or German. Size: The collection is contained in 79 archival boxes of which the first 25 are standard boxes while the rest are Nielsen's original boxes. Handed over: The collection was located in the basement of the mathematical library in the E block of the H. C. Ørsted Institute in the fall of 1996. It is not known when and how it was put here. Photocopies of material from the Staatsarchiv Hamburg was added to box 10 in July 1999.
