: what is an ideal city? does it ever exist in human history or have we ever got close to it?
Maybe it is a product of the contemporary social conditions.
Francesca's ideal city has no citizen, no mess, no trace of social interaction. can city space still embody meaning when there is no user? Maybe Francesca tell us that ideal city never exists and hardly will. is he posting a question or mocking at our real living cities? Name : Unknown Date Comments : Actually, i come to realise that a perfect city is impossible to imagine. That an ideal city is pigment of one's imagination. It is completed by our wants instead of our needs. Is it that "ideal" that the ideal city is completely clean, with a cloudy blue sky, old fashion hotel like buildings. This is the sort of place you would find in the early 16th century in the west. In this picture, i find no imagination what so ever. The IDEAL city should not be what we imagine but what we desire to be great! Otherwise, it is a well drawn and architectural featured piece of work. Very well done. Name : Unknown Date Comments : I have read that this was possibly painted by students of Piero and not by piero himself. Does anyone know if that's the case? I also heard that some computer scientist entered all the points in the painting into a CAD program and found that it was possible to move around the buildings in 3-D.

Piero Della Francesca was an Italian painter of the first rank whose style was one of the most individual of the early Renaissance. Piero was born in Borgo San Sepolcro, a small city in southern Tuscany, around 1420. He appears to have studied art in Florence, but his career was spent in other cities, among them Rome, Urbino, Ferrara, Rimini, and Arezzo. He was strongly influenced by Masaccio and Domenico Veneziano. His solid, rounded figures are derived from Masaccio, while from Domenico he absorbed a predilection for delicate colors and scenes bathed in cool, clear daylight. To these influences he added an innate sense of order and clarity. He wrote treatises on solid geometry and on perspective, and his works reflect these interests. He conceived of the human figure as a volume in space, and the outlines of his subjects have the grace, abstraction, and precision of geometric drawings. Piero's later works show the probable influence of Flemish art, which he assimilated without betraying his own monumental style. In works such as the Sinigallia Madonna (1470?, Galleria Nazionale delle Marche, Urbino), he adapted to his own purposes an attention to detail and a meticulous treatment of still life that were characteristic of Flemish art.

- 1492) was an outstanding 15th century Renaissance artist , both a mathematician and a painter. His genius in developing the new methods of perspective and employing them in his paintings has withstood the centuries. However, his well-deserved mathematical reputation was lost and only has been regained in this century. That loss was largely due to the fact that Pacioli plagarized Piero's major writings shortly after Piero's death, incorporating them into his published books without attribution. For centuries, the mathematical contributions of Piero were questioned. However, three of Piero's mathematical manuscripts were discovered in the early 20th century, and his reputation regained. Piero is the first of a series of artists whose geometric explorations involved the gradual rediscovery of the Archimedean solids . He rediscovered the five Archimedean solids which are truncated Platonic solids : the truncated tetrahedron truncated octahedron truncated cube truncated dodecahedron , and truncated icosahedron . These were presumably known to Archimedes, but that was not known in Piero's time. In addition, he rediscovered the

Piero della Francesca Long neglected, Piero della Francesca is now regarded as one of the greatest Renaissance painters - perhaps we needed Cezanne and Cubism to teach us to appreciate his perfect use of form and colour. Born sometime between 1410-1420, he remained faithful to his native town of Borgo San Sepolcro (modern day Sansepolcro in Umbria) for the rest of his life despite travelling afar. In 1442 he was made a member of the Priori (town council), a post he retained until his death. His earliest known painting is the Madonna della Misericordia at Sansepolcro but like many of his works it took years to complete; it was ordered from him in 1445 for delivery in three years but was finally paid for some 17 years later. A master of the impersonal, his mathematical clarity and absence of sentimentality produced images whose spiritual depth still confounds us. Always seeking to redraw the boundaries of art, he was also a great theorist and wrote two of the most important treatises of his time on perspective. The last record we have of him painting was in 1478 but he lived on until 1492 - tragically, blindness seems to have blighted his last years. To follow a pilgrim's trail of his works - yes, yes, we know only Urbino is in the Marche - visit the Uffizi in Florence to see his famous twin portraits of Federico da Montefeltro and Battista Sforza, Arezzo for his great fresco cycle of
