home Were it Perfect, Would it Work Better? Survey of a Language for Cosmic Intercourse Bruno Bassi In this paper we will be concerned with Lincos, a language designed for cosmic intercourse. An exposition of this language is contained in a book by Dr. Hans Freudenthal , published in 1960. 'Lincos' is an abbreviation for the Latin phrase 'Lingua cosmica'. Its intended purpose is to enable us humans to communicate with other intelligent beings that may live somewhere in space, on a faraway planet. This idea is somewhat out of fashion today, but it was quite alive a few decades ago; therefore I'd suggest to the reader to try to take it as a serious problem seeking a good solution. We shall examine Dr. Freudenthal's solution in some detail, and we will conclude stressing a sort of paradox that is implicit in the whole enterprise, an oscillation between a formalist and a communicative trend that makes Lincos a hybrid experiment from the point of view of the design of a perfect language. 1. Sie enthält keine Wertung, ist naturgemäß nicht vollständig und deckt sicher auch nicht alle Bereiche der Methodik und Didaktik ab. Lauri Pulakka berättar Fordell, Erik Fritiof yrke: kompositör, director musices född: 2.7.1917 i Gamlakarleby död: 21.12.1981 i Karleby föräldrar: jordbrukaren Johan Fritiof Fordell och Irene Johanna Kåla Ungdom Tillbaka till Karleby Fordell återvände till Karleby 1938. För att förtjäna sitt uppehälle tog Fordell anställning som restaurangmusiker mellan åren 1938-1955. Han spelade violin, cello och piano. Han spelade först på Grand Hotel och senare på Societetshuset. Mellan åren 1944-1945 studerade han vid Sibelius-akademin; komposition under ledning av Bengt Carlsson och dirigering under Jussi Jalas. Privat undervisning i komposition fick han av Aarre Merikanto och i instrumentation av Leo Funtek 1949-56. Tack vare stipendier kunde han studera även i Stockholm, 1963 i Holland och 1964, 1967 och 1969 i Wien samt 1971 i Berlin. Karriär Fordell tjänstgjorde som kapellmästare och pianolärare vid Gamlakarleby Svenska Arbetarinstitut mellan åren 1943-79 och undervisade även vid Kokkolan työväenopisto. Åren 1955-65 arbetade Fordell som försäljare vid Musik & Radio i Gamlakarleby. Därefter arbetade han som redaktör vid Österbottningen. Han skrev många musikrescensioner och artiklar om kultur från år 1940 och i Keskipohjanmaa från 1956. Fordell skrev ärligt och direkt. Han strävade alltid efter sanningen. Hans memoarer "En musikers minnesbilder" kom ut år 1981.
