HOME SOFYA KOVALEVSKAYA
LITERARY WORK Memoirs: VOSPOMINANI" DETSTVA
MEMOIRS OF CHILDHOOD (also known in English as A RUSSIAN CHILDHOOD) Kovalevskaya's most well known and highly praised work in literature. She relates in beautifully poetic prose her early childhood up to the age of 15 years. The story beautifully expresses the beginnings of her complex relationship to her family and to her sister in particular. Kovalevskaya, as is her trademark, places the story within the wider context of the social problems of the time and place. Frequently translated into English. The most recent translation by Beatrice Stillman, 1978. Novellas: NIGILISTKA
A NIHILIST GIRL The first edition was printed in Geneva, 1892. This is the story of a young girl who strives to be of use to people by participating in revolutionary circles. The prototype for the heroine is Vera Sergievna Goncharova, niece of N.N. Goncharova, Pushkin's wife. Kovalevskaya was acquainted with Vera Goncharova. The novel appeared in two versions in English, one entitled Vera Vorontsova, the other Vera Barantsova. The novella appeared in Russia in 1906, but was then banned. A Czech translation was allowed into Russia in 1908. The novel was also translated into German, French, and Polish. The work is considered one of two outstanding works by Kovalevskaya, the other being her MEMOIRS OF CHILDHOOD. Modern Language Association (MLA) is publishing Natasha Kolchevska's new translation of NIHILIST GIRL in October 2001.

63. Sofia Rotaru | Interview
It’s enough to recall Maria SkladovskaiyaCurie, sofia kovalevskaya, Margaret Thatcher, but still there are more men among polititiens, scholars, philosophers
http://www.sofiarotaru.com/english/e_interview.shtm
i n t e r v i e w Sofia Mikhailovna isn’t a person who is ready to share revelations about her private life with the public… And the universal truth "my home is my castle", matches the philosophy of this famous singer. The family of Rotaru including the families of her parents, sisters, brothers and now her son Ruslan, is a unique example to follow. And what really sustains this family is strong, friendly relations, that cannot be influenced by time. Family is the most important thing in the life of any person. It’s really crucial in for anybody to know that he has mother, that there is a place to come back… In our difficult time the role of woman, who keeps the hearth warm is increasing. - Sofia Mikhailovna, in one of your interviews you mentioned that fear is just a feeling inside you. What are the fears that a person can get rid of himself and the ones that aren’t manageable? - Most of the fears are caused by people’s imagination. And only the person’s realization of the reasons for fear help to overcome it. Of course, one needs courage and will-power for this… When I felt scared, I prayed and God helped me.

These are mathematicians frequently encountered by undergraduate students. For a more complete listing, A History of Mathematics: An Introduction , by Victor Katz (Harper Collins) has a wonderful pronunciation guide as part of the index. Interested persons are urged to consult this text.
Note on Pronunciation
Not all of the phonetic pronunciation symbols can be used in HTML (for example the schwa sound symbol and long vowel symbols) so this guide uses some nonstandard symbolism. Not all Web browsers, for example, Lynx, recognize some of the special characters used in this document. The accented syllable is capitalized. Most of the links are to MacTutor History of Mathematics Archive and can be quite slow. Abel

    Introduction
A normal intelligence quotient (IQ) ranges from 85 to 115 (According to the Stanford-Binet scale). Only approximately 1% of the people in the world have an IQ of 135 or over. In 1926, psychologist Dr. Catherine Morris Cox - who had been assisted by Dr. Lewis M. Terman, Dr. Florence L. Goodenaugh, and Dr. Kate Gordon - published a study "of the most eminent men and women" who had lived between 1450 and 1850 to estimate what their IQs might have been. The resultant IQs were based largely on the degree of brightness and intelligence each subject showed before attaining the age of 17. Taken from a revised and completed version of this study, table II shows the projected IQs of some of the best scorers.
