Minkowski, Rudolf (1895 - 1976)
Rudolf Leo Bernhard Minkowski was born in Strasbourg on May, 28th 1895 and died in Berkeley, California, on January 4th 1976. He was the son of Oskar Minkowski, a professor for pathology. Rudolf married Luise Amalie David (1902 - 1978) in Leipzig, Germany, in 1926. They had one daughter and one son, Eva and Hermann. After his retirement from the Mt. Wilson and Mt. Palomar observatories he received an invitation from the Radio Astronomical Laboratory in Berkeley. There he worked from 1961 to 1965, then retiring the second time. Minkowski was member of the Royal Astronomical Society, the US National Academy of Sciences; he received the Bruce Medal of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific in 1961 and a Dr. h.c. at Berkeley in 1968. Hermann Minkowski
Author of Space and Time ". . the really fundamental things have a way of appearing to be simple once they have been stated by a genius, who was in this case Minkowski." G. Y. Rainich From Science and Sanity (1933) by Korzybski Leibnitz , who invented the differential calculus independently of Newton, formulated a postulate of action by contact, and therefore could not become reconciled to Newton’s Law of Gravitation which was structurally a law of action at a distance, corresponding fully to Coulomb’s law in electricity. The latter law states that the force exerted by two electrically charged bodies upon each other is inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them, and acts in the direction of the line joining them. The introduction by Faraday of the structural notion of a ‘field’, instead of the notion of electrical charges acting at a distance, introduced the notion of a strain of the electrical field, which appears structurally as ‘lines of forces’. Here we already have a ‘fulness’ of ‘lines’ and a bit step toward the structural fusion of physics with geometry has been taken. The transition from E to riemannian geometry corresponds structurally to the transition of physic based on action at a distance to physics based on action by contact. The fundamental metrical theorem of E geometry is the Pythagorean rule, which expresses the fact that the square of the distance between two points is a quadratic form of the co-ordinates of the points. If we regard this theorem as strictly valid only in the case of points which are very near each other, we pass at once from E geometry to differential geometry. By doing so we gain a notable structural advantage, as we dispense with the necessity of defining our co-ordinates more precisely ; because the Pythagorean law, when expressed in differential form, is invariant for arbitrary transformations.

    Spacetime and the Interval
In 3-dimensional geometry, positions are represented by points ( x,y,z ). In physics, we are interested in events which have both time and position: ( t,x,y,z ). The collection of all possible events is called spacetime With an event ( t,x,y,z ) in spacetime we associate the units of cm with coordinates x, y, z . In addition, we express time t in terms of cm by multiplying it by the speed of light. (In fact, many texts use coordinates ( ct, x, y, z ) for events.) These common units (cm for us) are called geometric units . We express velocities in dimensionless units by dividing them by c . So for velocity v (in cm/sec, say) we associate the dimensionless velocity . Notice that under this convention, the speed of light is 1. This leads us to restate time dilation and length contraction as: and The concept of spacetime was introduced by Hermann Minkowski. Minkowski, in fact, was one of Albert Einstein's mathematics professors at the Zurich Politechnikum in 1900. Einstein's lack of respect for authority and his casual attitude toward coursework caused Minkowski to label Einstein a "lazy dog"... certainly an incorrect assessment! In Gottingen, Minkowski studied Einstein's 1905 paper on special relativity and was impressed. This study lead Minkowski to his formulation of an absolute four-dimensional spacetime.
