Next: About this document April 3, 1997 Early Calculus II Frans van Schooten , (1615-1660), Netherlands, had succeeded his father as professor of mathematics at Leyden. Because the original by Descartes was difficult to read, Van Schooten made a careful and clear translation of Descartes' La Geometrie into Latin, the preferred language of scholars. Partly the reason for this was so that his students could understand it. In 1659-1661, an expanded version was published. Geometria a Renato Des Cartes Two additional additions appeared in 1683 and 1695. It is reasonable to say that although analytic geometry was introduced by Descartes, it was established by Schooten. Jan de Witt , (1625-1672), the Grand Pensionary of Holland, was a colleague of Schooten. He wrote in his earlier years Elementa curvarum , a work in two parts. The first part (Part I) was on the kinematic and planimetric definitions of the conic sections. Among his ideas are the focus-directrix ratio definitions. The term `directrix' is original with De Witt. Part II, on the other hand, makes such a systematic use of coordinates that it has justifiably been called the first textbook on analytic geometry. Rolle Bachet was born at Bourg in 1581, and died in 1638. He wrote the , of which the first edition was issued in 1612, a second and enlarged edition was brought out in 1624; this contains an interesting collection of arithmetical tricks and questions, many of which are quoted in my Mathematical Recreations and Essays . He also wrote , which exists in manuscript; and a translation of the Arithmetic of Diophantus. Bachet was the earliest writer who discussed the solution of indeterminate equations by means of continued fractions. Mersenne Marin Mersenne , born in 1588 and died at Paris in 1648, was a Franciscan friar, who made it his business to be acquainted and correspond with the French mathematicians of that date and many of their foreign contemporaries. In 1634 he published a translation of Galileo's mechanics; in 1644 he issued his Cogita Physico-Mathematica , by which he is best known, containing an account of some experiments in physics; he also wrote a synopsis of mathematics, which was printed in 1664.

Rare Math Books at the University of Michigan The University of Michigan Library started with 3707 volumes (purchased for $5000), including Audubon's "The Birds of America" (1827-38). It offered little mathematics and grew slowly. A major improvement came in 1881 when a complete run of Crelle's Journal was donated. Two faculty made important contributions to the mathematics collection. Alexander Ziwet, who was on the faculty from 1898 to 1925, worked to improve the library and contributed a large collection of his own books. Louis C. Karpinski, on the faculty from 1904 to 1948, gathered many rare volumes for the mathematics collection. Another important influence occurred in 1964 when Mathematical Reviews moved to Ann Arbor. Today the mathematics collection at the University of Michigan is one of the best in the world. The collection of rare mathematics books is outstanding. The titles listed below in chronological order were selected by V. Frederick Rickey, of Bowling Green State University, to show to a history of mathematics course taught at Michigan State University by Dan Chazan on March 11, 1996. Nieuws Nieuw netwerk Afgelopen donderdag, tijdens de USE ondernemersavond in het Cc-complex, gaf rector magnificus Frans van Vught het startsein voor de nieuwe netwerkorganisatie van USE, priUSE geheten. University Student Enterprises stimuleert het studentondernemerschap op de UT. PriUSE is de naam. Aan de UT afgestudeerde ondernemers nemen er aan deel. Ze kunnen van nut zijn voor de studenten die net zijn gestart met een eigen zaak. Zie ook www.priuse.nl.

Meester in de meetkunde In Leiden studeerde Christiaan Huygens wiskunde bij Frans van Schooten. In die tijd was de wiskunde heel meetkundig van karakter en gebaseerd op de stellingen en meetkunde van Archimedes Christiaan bleek al snel een meester in de meetkunde. Toen de bekende, wetenschappelijk ingestelde pater Marin Mersenne wat werk van de toen 17-jarige Christiaan zag, vergeleek hij hem zelfs met Archimedes. Toen hij na zijn studie weer naar in zijn vader's huis in Den Haag verbleef, vestigde Christiaan Huygens zijn naam als wiskundige definitief met twee werken: "Theoremata de quadratura hyperboles, ellipsis et circuli" dat in 1651 verscheen, en "De circuli magnitudine inventa" uit 1654.

At the begin of the 17 th century, great scientists as Tycho Brahe, Galileo Galilei, Johannes Kepler and Pierre Gassendi – now best remembered for their roles in the development of modern physics and astronomy – all held astrology in high esteem. However, at the end of the 17 th century, the scientific community had completely turned away from astrology. For some the subject of derision, others preferred to ignore it completely – so, hardly a single word on astrology, either pro or contra, is to be found in the works of scientists as Christiaan Huygens (1629-1695) or Isaac Newton (1642-1727). However, in the case of Newton, the astrological literature presents a different view and even claims that Newton was in secret an ardent student of astrology.
