64. H.D.S. At The Turn Of The Last Century: William Wallace Fenn
This page, from an online exhibit by the AndoverHarvard Theological Library, isa brief biography, with photographs, of william wallace Fenn, Bussey Professor
http://www.hds.harvard.edu/library/exhibitd/fenn.html
William Wallace Fenn (1862-1932) Bussey Professor of Theology, 1901-1932
Dean of the Faculty of Divinity, 1906-1922
William Wallace Fenn was born in Boston on 12 February 1862 to Hannah Morrill Osgood and William Fenn, who died only seven weeks after his son's birth. Fenn graduated from Harvard in 1884 and received an A.M. and S.T.B. (bachelor of sacred theology) from the Divinity School in 1887. He had entered the Divinity School "not ... with the design of becoming a minister, but rather with a view to the teaching of N. T. Greek." Raised in an orthodox congregationalist (and known as one while a student at the Divinity School), Fenn had begun to question beliefs as he studied the Bible. He was not, however, sure he wanted to become a Unitarian: "The Orthodox won't have me for I have declared my heresy and the Unitarians don't want my kind of man." Ordained a Unitarian minister in 1890, Fenn served parishes in Pittsfield and Chicago from 1887 to 1901. In Chicago, Fenn began his teaching career at the Meadville Theological School. While teaching at Meadville, Fenn articulated a functional and pragmatic approach to religion; in so doing, he levied criticism against liberal optimism, questioning its ability to deal with human suffering. In 1901, Fenn was named that Bussey Professor of Systematic Theology at Harvard (although he had no background in the area). From 1906 to 1922 Fenn was the dean of faculty at the Divinity School and received his S.T.D. (doctor of sacred theology) from the school in 1908. He also served on the University's Board of Preachers for five years (non-consecutively).

65. Falkirk
Another description of the battle, and the betrayal of william wallace.
http://www.nwlink.com/~scotlass/falkirk.htm
The assemblage presented a formidable force for Wallace to deal with. Some say that Edward had as many as 80-90,000 men. By July of the year the English were advancing up the coast with a fleet of ships for support. Supplies were hard to come by, especially with the size of the army, they were near starvation, and Wallace and his force seemed to have disappeared. Because of the size of the English force, Wallace continued to fall back, destroying behind him what could be of use to the English. The logistics of feeding an army of that size was becoming a real problem for Edward and he was thinking of abandoning the march when he received vital intelligence that Wallace and his men were but 15 miles distant in Callander Wood. Since Wallace had his intelligence also, he must also have known of the English forces assembled. Both sides waited out the night, knowing that the morning would bring another battle for subjugation or freedom. Edward was assisted by an act of treachery. Many of the Scots nobles held lands in both England and in Scotland and their loyalties lay not with their country as much as with the protection of their possessions and lands. Two of the Scots barons, the Earl of Angus and the Earl of Dunbar rode over to the English side and informed Edward that Wallace was preparing to strike at night, thus having an advantage in surprise. Wallace realized that with his two barons missing, he had been betrayed and since the element of surprise of a night battle was gone, decided to wait until morning to begin the battle.

67. Matt Ewart's Wallace Essay
Biographical essay of Sir william wallace, sorting fact from fiction based on author's researc.
http://www.braveheart.co.uk/macbrave/history/wallace/ewart.htm
MacBRAVEHEART Matt Ewart's Wallace Essay Under the headline: Cultural myths grow larger than life. Surely this is the case with William Wallace the following essay by Matt Ewart was printed in the Herald newspaper in Scotland on Saturday November 15th, 1997. The story of Wallace poured a Scottish prejudice into my veins which will boil along till the floodgates of time shut in eternal rest. Robert Burns For William Wallace, Scottish patriot, the floodgates of life closed on that terrible day in 1305 when, after a cynical mock trial at Westminster Hall in London, he was dragged through the streets as a treacherous outlaw to barbarous execution at Smithfield. Edward I of England wanted the destruction of Wallace's name and reputation as well as physical presence, but inadvertently created a hero and martyr. The name of William Wallace as freedom fighter takes on immense fascination and significance at certain times, not only for Scots, but for many abroad. This is one of those times, certainly helped on by a recent hugely successful film and a best-selling biography. This year marks 700 years since Wallace, at Lanark, "first drew sword to free his native land", and instigated the Scottish War of Independence. Over 80 places throughout Scotland claim a direct association with Wallace, reflecting his national campaign and the myths that have grown in his name.

    Family and Early Childhood
On October 28, 1955, shortly after 9:00 p.m., William Henry Gates III was born. He was born into a family with a rich history in business, politics, and community service. His great-grandfather had been a state legislator and mayor, his grandfather was the vice president of a national bank, and his father was a prominent lawyer. [Wallace, 1992, p. 8-9] Early on in life, it was apparent that Bill Gates inherited the ambition, intelligence, and competitive spirit that had helped his progenitors rise to the top in their chosen professions. In elementary school he quickly surpassed all of his peer's abilities in nearly all subjects, especially math and science. His parents recognized his intelligence and decided to enroll him in Lakeside, a private school known for its intense academic environment. This decision had far reaching effects on Bill Gates's life. For at Lakeside, Bill Gates was first introduced to computers.

Braveheart - William Wallace Declared Guardian of Scotland
    "See approach proud Edwards power,
    Chains and slavery!"
William Wallace Declared Guardian of Scotland (Enlarge) These words of Burns conjure up a vivid picture of the troublous times in which our forefathers lived at the end of the thirteenth century. After the death of Alexander III. The hopes of the people of Scotland rested with the maid of Norway. Her untimely death in 1290 left the country at the mercy of the English King. From that date until the crown was awarded to John Balliol, Edward prosecuted remorselessly his schemes against the independence of Scotland. The Scottish King, as a vassal, paid homage to Edward and, in return, suffered many humiliations at the hands of his overlords. Scottish nobles and gentry - many from our Borderland - were compelled to swear allegiance to the "proud usurper." However, this reign of tyranny and oppression was destined to be overthrown by one of humble birth. From the West of Scotland came William Wallace , inspired with the fervid patriotism to devote his life to winning back the independence of his country.

William Wallace and Robert I, King of Scots 1297 - 1307 Edward I was intent on preserving his rights as overlord of Scotland. The Scots quickly took a dislike to his interventionist policies and this provided an excuse for the English king to launch a full-scale invasion of Scotland. King John (already placed under restrictions by discontented Scottish noblemen) was forced to abdicate, leaving Scotland under the rule of English officials. In an attempt to eject these officials, a minor landholder's son, William Wallace, raised forces to fight the English. Wallace was spectacularly successful against a better equipped and better trained English army at the Battle of Stirling Bridge (11 September 1297) but was ultimately defeated by an army led by Edward I in person at Falkirk (22 July 1298). Wallace remained politically and militarily active in guerrilla warfare for a further seven years but was ultimately betrayed to the English. He was tried at Westminster as a rebel to the English crown and executed on 23 August 1305. Shortly after the death of William Wallace, Robert Bruce, Earl of Carrick - the grandson of one of the would-be monarchs whom Edward adjudicated against in 1292 - broke his allegiance to Edward I, murdered his chief political rival, John Comyn of Badenoch, and claimed the Scottish throne for himself. He was crowned by the bishop of St Andrews at Scone on 25 March 1306.
