Wenham goes true west
By John Mangan May 1 2002 David Wenham: career in overdrive. Picture: SEBASTIAN COSTANZO Macedonia, Molokai, Middle Earth and Barwon Heads - all have been home to David Wenham in the past few chaotic years as his acting career has kicked into overdrive. But while leper colonies, former war zones, mythical kingdoms and seaside retreats near Geelong all have their appeal, right now Wenham has Melbourne on his mind. His turn as Lee, the wild-eyed black sheep of the family in the MTC's production of Sam Shepard's True West , has not only virtually sold out but has been earning rave reviews. His meticulous preparation for roles usually involves wandering around streets and parks observing people, looking for ideas and inspiration. "Melbourne actually provides great fodder for characters," he says. "I think it's one of my all-time favourite cities. It's full of the most amazing characters, especially the city, this square mile here. And some of the characters I encounter on a day-to-day basis just walking down Swanston Street, you know, if you put them up on stage people would say you're over-acting." On the stage a ball of intense, frustrated energy, off stage by the banks of the Yarra, Wenham is calm and easy-going. He's been kept up beyond his bedtime by the noise of post-Logies revelry, but he resisted the urge to party, keeping his focus tightly on the play.

Rarely, however, does God bless his Church with a theologian whose thoughts form a standard against which all future theology is measured. Three men come to mind: St. Augustine, St. Thomas Aquinas and (pregnant pause...) Pope John Paul II. Yes, in our own day we have a Pope whose insights are sure to leave the Church reeling in self-discovery for centuries to come. His work will set a new standard for theological inquiry. At the Gielgud Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue, the actress Kathleen Turner, currently appearing in The Graduate, paid special tribute to Sir John at the end of the performance. She said the world had lost one of its greatest actors who brought "inspiration and pleasure" to many people. The lights were dimmed for a minute's silence. Twelve other theatres in Lord Lloyd-Webber's Really Useful Group, also dimmed their lights in a "blackout" as a mark of respect before Monday evening's performances. Kathleen Turner "He brought inspiration and pleasure" One of the greatest thespians of his generation Sir John died on Sunday at his home near Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire.

John Wesley Hardin
name="oldWestMain"; main timeline links census ... contact me Hardin was the epitome of the western gun fighter. In terms of speed, accuracy, and ruthlessness, there was probably no one better. He led a life of hatred, murder, and constant fear of being captured. Throughout his 7 years of gunfighting, he is attributed with at least 41 killings. The first 31 killings did not concern most people because the kind of people that had been killed may have had it coming to them. That all changed when former Texas Ranger Charlie Webb was gunned down. He was born John Wesley Hardin on May 26, 1853 at Bonham, Texas, the son of a Methodist minister. His father named him for the founder of Methodism, John Wesley. There were big plans in store for Wes, none of which came about. Wes, who may have been pathologically racist, cut down his first man at the age of 15. In a burst of rage over an incident, Hardin shot a former slave 5 times. In Washington County, Texas, he also shot the 3 Union soldiers who pursued him. Young Hardin was quite skilled with a six gun by this time, and troubles followed. In that time, anyone who killed Union soldiers and slaves was revered in Texas. He soon had a following of loyal supporters. By the time he was 17, he had killed at least a dozen men. To escape the heat, he joined a cattle drive to Kansas. This is when his true reputation began.

http://205.126.22.50/socialstudies/utah/1841.html
The Way West - John Bartleson South Pass over the Continental Divide, the path through the Rockies heading west, is a gentle 20-mile saddle easily traversed in season on horseback or by wagon. When fur companies brought supplies by wagon to trappers at their annual rendezvous, it demonstrated dramatically that wheels could make it across the rugged slopes. The attraction of the West was played with increasing intensity across the pages of eastern newspapers reporting the adventures of mountaineers and explorers. The West became an image of wide open spaces, where land was free for the taking, and a person's troubles could be left behind.
Soon the promise of Oregon and a fresh start in new country drew scores of prospective overland travelers to the "Western Emigration Society", organized by Missourians to help immigrants prepare for the journey west.
The way West, beyond the Rockies, was an unclear path to travel. It was thought to head for Oregon by way of South Pass to Fort Hall, the Hudson's Bay Co. trading post, from there west the best way possible.
The first wagon teams gathered at the Kansas River in May of 1841. They were nervous about the journey before them. One headstrong, rather overbearing individual, John Bartleson, insisted on being elected captain and threatened to pull out of the enterprise if he were ignored. It was obvious that "Captain" Bartleson knew little more about Plains travel than the next man, but the immigrants obliged him anyway.
