PRINT THIS STORY E-MAIL THIS STORY Wigner played important role in creation of ORNL By Frank Munger, News-Sentinel senior writer December 2, 2002 A Nov. 15 lecture at Oak Ridge National Laboratory was billed as "Weinberg on Wigner in Weinberg." It was Alvin Weinberg speaking about his friend and colleague Eugene Wigner as a centennial celebration of the Nobel laureate's birth date. Weinberg delivered his speech in the ORNL auditorium that bears his name (the lab's other major auditorium is named for Wigner). I had hoped and planned to attend this stately event, but work conflicts made that impossible. Fortunately, I was able to catch up with happenings via the old-tech magic of videotape. The event brought together all of the living directors of ORNL, including Weinberg who served the longest stint (1955-73). Others on hand were Herman Postma, Alex Zucker, Alvin Trivelpiece and Bill Madia, the current lab director. | |
