There is a tendency to apply the term "environmental toxicology" only to the study of direct effects of environmental chemicals on human beings and the term "ecotoxicology" only to the study of the effects of chemicals on ecosystems and their nonhuman components. Human beings are not isolated from the natural environment; they are an integral part of it and have modified it by their activities. Chemicals move through the environment to reach people directly through water, the air, dust etc. and indirectly through food. Most of the world environment as we know it is the result of human intervention and hence human activities, for example in agriculture, have a profound effect on environmental transfer processes.
