Product Description
This book is a simple guide to DIET change. You can see by reading the reviews there are many opinions about ADHD. Some will have you believe that it is a DISEASE and only MEDS can HELP!! The BOTTOM LINE is the FACT!!! DHA in the brain is critical for OPTIMAL BRAIN function. If you do not want to change you or your families diet do not PURCHASE the book. TRANS FAT interupts the creation of DHA, if for example you or your child eat peanut butter with TRANS fat, you will have long term challenges. Some have a problem with a NATURAL APPROACH, let me tell if meds were the answer you would not see so many looking for NATURAL options. Why a CHIROPRACTOR? The body works by nervous system function, when there is interuption in this communication like a USB port being disconnected the body will not function optimally. There is a chapter on spinal function, you will be amazed by what you will learn. Dr. Bob's approach is simple, create the platform to create DHA by feeding the body correct nutrients, eliminating sugar for some, trans fat for others, dairy can be an issue. It is not uncommn for ADHD children to have ADHD parents. I know the book will make a difference. Write down what you and or your child eats, look at the labels; if you see a pattern of trans fat or partially hydrogenated oils you would be very wise to get the book and make changes. DB ... 1-0 out of 5 stars PUH-LEEEZZZZZ! Total Crap!
Looking for serious, credible ADD treatment? - try Hallowell instead. As the mother of an 8 year old child with inattentive type ADD, I continually read and research ALL aspects of this subject to the nth degee. I read this book - even though I felt the bile rising in my throat as I did so. Dr. Bob made me very, very angry. The very first thing I learned in this book is that Dr. Bob has perfect children. They are perfectly healthy. They have perfect teeth. I suppose all that perfectness comes from the genetic makeup of two perfectly perfect parents.Congratulations Dr. Bob!Good for you! (Clue #1 that Dr. Bob has "issues") I can say with a great deal of confidence that if any of Dr. Bob's ridiculous treatments worked for your child, he/she absolutely, unequivocally does NOT have ADHD.It saddens me deeply when snippy little health food freaks make ignorant statements regarding medical conditions and deny children treatent that is vital to their health and emotional well being. ADD is a scientifically recognized hereditary neuro-biological condition in which the synapses of the brain do not properly connect. The stimulant medications will not make your child smarter. The meds will help to "defrag" the brain and remove the "fog" associated with ADD, thereby improving cognitive function.Stimulant medications will not correct behavioral issues caused by bad parenting. Meds will help with behavioral issues that are the result of frustrations associated with ADD. I'm all for consistency in routine. My husband and I both come from a long line of ADDers, so we're VERY organized and consistent.I'm all for healthy eating. We rarely eat food with preservatives. (We did "home-made" long before it was trendy & cool.)I have read and even tried a few techniques from credible sources (of which Dr Bob is not one). All those "natural fixes" were a complete waste of time and money and delayed proper medical treatment. We'll keep our Adderall(which works beautifully), thank you very much.

5-0 out of 5 stars "A Wonderful Tool to Help Overcome ADHD and Combat the SAD Diet that's a HUGE Contributor to Causing ADD/ADHD"
When I first saw this book listed, I was a little skeptical because of so many books that I've read about ADHD that offer little to no help whatsoever with the actual treatment and symptoms of the condition. However, this book is straightforward, concise and explains at a chemical and molecular level what's going on in the body and brain when a person consumes trans fats and other unhealthy foods. I've actually know a lot of this stuff for awhile, but this REALLY enforced a great deal of what I already knew and in a way seared it into my brain that if I really want to get well, then I "must" change once and for all. For example, I knew just from how I feel when I consume any kind of dairy that it just was not good for me, but yet the dairy corporation will have you believe otherwise with all their slick marketing campaigns.DAIRY IS NOT GOOD FOR THE HUMAN BODY!!PERIOD!!!It causes a your bad LDL Cholesterol to rise even if it's skim milk, it causes ear infections, sinus flare ups, etc. because the properties of cow's milk affects the body at a molecular level and has nothing to do with actual fat content of the milk and cheese. Also, we've been using almond milk for years and I just found out that almond milk has TWICE the amount of calcium that cows milk has.Don't let the marketing dupe you!Get better like you deserve and read this book to help you understand what you need to do!Also, we have been consuming the healthy Omega 3 Fats through Flax Oil and I already notice a difference!I am so happy I bought this book...I am sending it to all my family and friends, even those who don't have ADHD.This book is a must read for EVERY household in my opinion!

4-0 out of 5 stars Helped my son's attention span
I purchased this book after my son's teacher was concerned about his behavior in class and the likelihood of being unable to go on to the next grade. He had issues with paying attention in class and focusing on his work. I had come to the decision to take him to the doctor, but searched the internet for help first. I came across this book and ordered it. It has changed him for the good! We now give him 1 1/2 tsp. of omega oil daily and avoid giving him any products with partially hydrogenated oil or high fructose corn syrup. It was an adjustment to get used to because we did not realize just how many products (especially those marketed for kids) contained those ingredients. We've learned the more ingredients listed on a package, the less healthier it is. We try to avoid foods with preservatives, but it is hard. The extra work that goes into making his lunch every day (because the school lunches are full of sugar and processed foods) and planning our meals is hard, but definitely worth it for him to be excelling in school!

3-0 out of 5 stars not as helpful
tried suggestions in the book without any results, good suggestions though, maybe patient is too old, 38 yrs old

5-0 out of 5 stars Sooo informational !
This book was recommended to me by a friend and I can not say enough about how helpful this book has truly been. It has helped me see a light at the end of the tunnel and helped me feel more informed about what we're dealing with instead of a helpless mother second-guessing everything I've done so far as a parent.
If you have a child with ADHD, this book has the most helpful and up to date information on everything from causes, misconceptions, and statistics to reasons children may struggle with school or with socialization skills. I mean Dr. Barkley gives many examples from families he has worked with from the viewpoint of the parents as well as a heart-wrenching letter written by a student about how he was treated in school by teachers. It even includes a behavioral modification plan to try at home or in school.
Whether you have thought about trying medication or not, there is an entire chapter with facts about the different medications and how they work, etc. He just gives out the facts and doesn't push towards medication but wants to be informative so you become what he calls the "executive" parent since you are the best advocate for your child.
Wonderful book!!! I am reading it for the second time just in the last month. Very easy to read! I can't say enough about this book! Thank you for the help Dr. Russell Barkley!

5-0 out of 5 stars books
I sent the book to my daughter. She received it packaged well in a timely manner.
The book has a lot of valuable information in it and she likes it.
It answers a lot of questions about ADHD and living with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Book!
This is the BEST ADHD reference book I have come across.Russell A. Barkley is the premier authority on ADHD.It should be labled the ADHD "Bible".Research based advice, not just opinions. This book takes an excellent look at the causes, symptoms and treatment strategies for parents.

As a mother with ADD and coming from a family where my mom has terrible ADHD and most of my 8 siblings have varying degrees of this disorder, I found this book to be VERY helpful and thought provoking. My oldest son is also ADHD.His symptoms were driving me absolutely crazy! When he was 3, and was diagnosed with ADHD from an EXCELLENT psychologist, Dr. Amy Schley in Waukesha, WI, she recommended this book.Dr. Schley herself goes out yearly to spend a week or more training with Dr. Barkley, the author of this book.Dr. Schley's entire practice focuses on ADHD kids and adults. With a sole practice of ADHD clientelle. She thought very highly of Dr. Barkley's research and continuing study in this field to recommend it and visit yearly and learn more from the author.

Since the time that my son was diagnosed, I was skeptical about ADHD being a "real" disorder, thinking I had grown up in a "normal" family. When I read this book I learned so much about my son's and my own disorder. This book was full of real practical advice to help someone dealing with an ADHD as a child or an adult.

I would definitely recommend reading this and other books by Russell A. Barkley.I have been using it for the last 10 years as a reference book.Dr. Barkley really understands the disorder and has done VERY credible research to back up his findings. He also takes a possitive reinforcement approach to helping parents cope with the daily ADHD trauma in their lives.

I would recommend another book for parents of defiant children and teens: "Your Defiant Child: Eight Steps To Better Behavior" and "Your Defiant Teen: 10 Steps to Resolve Conflict and Build A Better Relationship". I attended a Defiant Child workshop when my son was 3 and it was a lifechanger of how to deal with his ADHD behaviors. It was only later that I found out that Russell A. Barkley was the same author for both of these EXCELLENT books.

4-0 out of 5 stars This Book provides great summary of research and description of ADHD
This is a must read for parents and teachers capable of dealing with the medical thought process of providing multiple approaches.

3-0 out of 5 stars A good reference
Making the Connection: A Parent's Guide to Medication in ADHDDr.Barkley is a recognized expert in the field of ADHD. Taking Charge of ADHD has been around for several years as an essential reference for many parents. Even though this book is outdated regarding the latest research and the current available medications, it is still an excellent reference for parents looking for good reliable information on ADHD. Part 1 is an overview of ADHD. Dr. Barkley addresses many of the myths that surround the diagnosis as well as provide good basic information. The other parts of the book address a variety of topics including some common sense behavioral approaches. Overall this is a good reference that is a bit outdated. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
The book made it very easy for me to clearly understand how to help my child at home, school and in general life.I would recommend it if you need to know more on ADHD.

5-0 out of 5 stars a terrific resource guide for parents and teachers
School Success for Kids with ADHD is a guidebook for parents, educators, and other adults who work with children.Attention issues may be found among children of every culture and every level of ability.Gifted children with attention deficit are often misdiagnosed or marked as underachievers.

The authors of this book are two psychologists and a veteran classroom teacher. They present up to date research on ADHD along with realistic methods for accommodation.I found myself nodding my head in agreement at many of the most salient points.Kids with attention problems need the support and guidance of the adults in their lives.Even the brightest should not be left to fend for themselves.Left untreated, many ADHD kids grow up to self medicate with alcohol and drugs.

The book opens with an inspirational quote from record-breaking Olympic gold medalist, Michael Phelps.Phelps has ADHD and his mother notes that , "He never sat still, never stopped talking, never stopped asking questions, and had difficulty staying on task."But Michael did have the ability to "hyperfocus" on swimming, and so she encouraged him to stick with it.Gifted kids with ADHD often seem to be able to hyperfocus this way.I believe that this contributes to the frequent perception that they are merely lazy, as parents and teachers can point out examples of intense attention to detail that seem to belie an ADHD diagnosis.

The first few chapters of "School Success" discuss the history of ADHD, the importance of attention , and the medical perspective.Chapter four is directed at parents and includes information on how to request assessment for attention deficit, tips for managing behavior at home, strategies for homework issues, and support group facts. Chapter five is the practical heart of the book.It contains a 12 point Multimodal Action Plan. This comprehensive plan addresses assessment, medical monitoring, educational support, and more. The plan calls for a network of people and tools to treat the individual.
It makes sense that a single option or course of treatment will be less effective over time than one which treats the child holistically. School accommodations are the topic of chapter six.Small changes such as preferential seating (in the front row or away from distractions) may add up to a big change in school performance. As kids grow older, they have more complex responsibilities and must deal with extensive homework, project planning and implementation, etc. These topics are also addressed.Chapter eight is titled, "College and Beyond."It emphasizes the need for careful planning and a treatment plan for college. Chapter ten reviews alternative treatments for ADHD, including the Feingold Diet, EFA supplementation, ginkgo biloba, and homeopathy, to name a few. Some of these treatments appear to yield positive results, while others produce little or no effect in controlled studies.
The book wraps up with a nice resource list,a who's who of eminent people with ADHD or learning disabilities, a few reproducible worksheets, and extended research data.

All in all, this is a very useful, accessible, and well written guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars The ultimate guide to ADHD
School Success for Kids with ADHD is a one-stop resource for parents, teachers, and professionals working with kids with ADHD.It has easy to follow, very effective strategies for school, incredibly helpful suggestions for parents, and current information about medication and alternative treatments. This extremely informative, but surprisingly easy to read book takes the most up-to-date research and puts it all together in an understandable, comprehensive, and easy to implement action plan. There are a number of books available on ADHD, but this book is different than all of the others I have read because it includes everything you would want and need to know about ADHD from preschool through college and beyond.I highly recommend this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Thorough Guide to ADHD
Not since Russell Barkley's 'Taking Charge of ADHD' has there been a more thorough guide to understanding andsupporting children with attention problems. This book serves as an outstanding resource for parents and teachers as they work to understand and manage students with attention deficit disorder. The historic treatment of this diagnosis is clear, highly readable, and extremely complete.Particularly useful is the up to date chapter speaking to the use and efficacy of medicinal treatment.Additional chapters that focus on best practice interventions and educational treatment are outstanding. This title will be mandatory reading in my training of school psychology students. This book has already made it into the hands of parents asking questions and seeking additional information regarding their children with attention difficulties. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative book
I bought this book for help with discipline and it has done wonders!!! If you follow his plan and stay consistent,it really does work!! The book arrived in excellent condition with no markings whatsoever.

2-0 out of 5 stars Stein Ignores the Research
If you are looking for sound advice and information, try something more current and balanced. If you are looking to support a preconceived opinion that AD/HD is not real, and that ritalin is used merely to control normal and active children, you may not need this book. You are already convinced.

I am a 37 year old mother of five children (ages 9-16) and a master's degree seminary student. I recently borrowed this from my school's library while working on a research paper. I find that Dr. Stein uses fallacious reasoning and scare tactics to promote his ideas. His writing is sarcastic and disrespectful towards parents, teachers, physicians, psychologists, and researchers. Furthermore, his work is poorly supported, and the research he cites is extremely out of date. Out of 54 total sources (which is very few for such an ambitious book), only 16 are less than ten years old, and none are peer-reviewed research on AD/HD. In contrast, there were 12, 077 results in an academic search database (searched today) for the keywords: attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Surely Dr. Stein could have used a few of those to support his arguments. He asserts his opinion as a supposed counterpoint to a conspiracy of highbrow drug pushers. His arguments are similar to all conspiracy theorists.

AD/HD is one of the most heavily researched psychological disorders. Between June 1, 2008 and July 2, 2008 there were 131 peer-reviewed scientific journal articles published. Dr. Stein argues that the motivation for research on this disorder is primarily driven by the greed of drug companies. He fails to tell us that AD/HD is shown to increase many risk factors, especially when untreated, for dangerous and criminal behavior in teens and adults. It is also associated with other concerns that affect quality of life throughout the lifespan. AD/HD is not only a personal problem, it is a public health problem. The nation of Canada recommends that all teenage drivers diagnosed with AD/HD use stimulant medication while driving, because the scientific research is so strong that the drug reduces risk taking and traffic collisions in AD/HD drivers. These are real and supportable concerns that are not about control, but health and safety.

Children and adults with significant AD/HD need real treatment from competent practitioners: psychiatrists, counselors, therapists, and clinical social workers. Parents of children with AD/HD need support and help, not advice such as, "These children lack the essential values needed to sustain them through each school day and through the long educational years. School work isn't easy. ... Parents must instill a love of learning and education to curtain a child's inattention and misbehavior in school" (p. 37). Dr. Stein informs us that children with AD/HD simply aren't trying hard enough because their parents haven't properly instilled the value of education and a love of learning. This is a completely unsupported statement, both in research and practice with AD/HD families. It is also extremely harmful thinking that may escalate the tensions often found in families that deal with this disorder.

It must be acknowledged, however, that Dr. Stein speaks to the problem of wrong diagnoses and poor treatment choices. It is true that many other disorders can look like AD/HD (e.g., allergies) and diagnosis must be made carefully in order to determine the best treatment plan. Furthermore, once a treatment method has been selected, it must be monitored carefully and adjusted until optimal. Both pharmaceutical and behavioral interventions are appropriate and often beneficial. AD/HD diagnosed individuals should not be denied appropriate treatment due to the extremes on either side of the argument.

5-0 out of 5 stars A real eye opener
This book was a real eye opener. It actually had a frightening tone to its information - that I'm sure was designed to grasp the attention of the reader who most likely is a parent with questions about the drug Ritalin. It was useful.Everyone with "active" children should read it before doing the extreme.

5-0 out of 5 stars Talk about transformation!
Do you want to be blown away by the straight-forward truth. Our child was out of control, dominating every situation we were in - it was all about him and his inability to see others.Inattentive, can't focus, getting F's in school, only because ....(the list is endless), this book lays out how to get your child on the right tract so he/she can be a contributer to society and not take from everyone.

This book spells out what our Grandparents knew and could not tell us.No more drugs, no more psycologist office visits, no more check lists and prizes, no more manipulation and bargaining; 'let your yes be a yes! and your no be a no!'
This book teaches us parents how to use gentle, firm, consistent tones so anxiety is not produced in these children.
This book talks about the way some children receive information; what are we doing as parents???? This book is not for cowards. If you are a parent who is easily influenced, this book is not for you, it is a wake up call to how we as parents parent.

Our child just received his report card...I want to cry because I am so greatful for the transformation. He received almost all A's and some B's.He can now actually draw a picture with detail. Before he would scrible on an assignment and say, "I'm done."I follow Dr. Stein's recommendations and have found peace. Our son's brothers and sister now have a friend and not a bully for a brother. It is truly amazing.

4-0 out of 5 stars common sense for adhd
I am the mother of Ben, who has had lots of labels...Adhd, Autism, PDD, brat.Somehow he has made it through to the fourth grade and basically is a bright kid.

Ben was languaged delayed and might not have made it in the regular classroom without ritalin because he was just out of control and I was clueless as to how to change. In earlier days,we literally had to "show" Ben how to talk, with pictures... he had to "see" it to understand it, as he didn't pick up language as most kids do.He was different from the beginning!!!

He is the most frustrating, and the most enjoyable of kids I have ever had the pleasure to love. But when it came to correction, I just believed I would have to spend the rest of my life ignoring his oppositionality. It was like I had no control...and just kept getting more and more frustrated, and giving more and more negative vibes off because I was just at my wits end.I don't like the idea of spanking or yelling at all, and it always just seemed to make matters worse. Ben took no responsibility for his behavior.

When I came across this book initially I ignored it because it was that crazy "anti-ritalin" crowd, or so I thought. You know, the "zealots".After having read it and applied it somewhat, I wonder if Dr. Stein hasn't serendipitously (sp?) come across a way to help our kids behave, in the same way Catherine Maurice's book helped provide me with a way to teach Ben language!!Hey, we're on this earth to help each other out!

I really do believe Ben has a difference that makes it hard to deal with some aspects of schooling. I don't recall anywhere in this book Dr. Stein saying that it's easy. But if I only give in and say, "He can't do it, he's handicapped..." am I really helping him?It isn't a matter of ritalin or not...what this book forces you to think about is how we as parents unfortunately handicap our children by having such low expectations of them.

How can a form of discipline that includes no yelling or spanking, no belittlement; that encourages positive behavior and encourages thinking of the consequences of actions beforehand; that requires us as parents to refuse to see our children as handicapped and to enrich their lives and show them unconditional love, be bad?

Got me....

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide for new ADHD parents!
My son was just diagnosed with ADHD a few months ago so during my deer-in-headlights phase, I really needed something that would give me the answers to all the questions I had without slant or bias.("Medicine is WONDERFUL!" or "Medicine is HORRIBLE!!"That kind of thing.)This book does a wonderful job of that.It touches on all the various aspects of the disorder and how parents can help navigate their child through this challenging diagnosis.I highly recommend that every doctor who is telling a parent that their child has ADHD prescribe this to the parents!

1-0 out of 5 stars This is old school, meant to sell drugs......
I know from personal experience as well as reading the book, this is just a propaganda book for putting kids on medication. There are kids who have ADHD, probably about 10% of those actually diagnosed. Exercise, Diet, structure, that is what the kids who do not have ADHD are missing when misdiagnosed. Even some kids with less serious cases of ADHD can be treated properly with exercise, diet, and structure/routine. The industry is selling us a story to sell drugs and many parents are using the drugs to escape accountability and an unwillingness to put in the effort it takes to be the parent your child needs you to be for them. I suggest reading"The Great Misdiagnosis ADHD" by Julian Stuart Haber, MD. It is far more honest and enlightening.
When a medical doctor is trying to claim he is an expert on health and wellness and he or she is 100-200 pounds overweight and in very poor health, how is that they should even be taken seriously?

Product Description

At least one child in five experiences some form of learning difficulty, however, learning difficulties as we understand them do not exist—they are not diseases, just symptoms. These symptoms never appear alone and are treatable and avoidable. Here, an expert in child neurology approaches learning difficulties of childhood—including dyslexia, ADD, OCD, ADHD, dyspraxia and Tourette’s syndrome—from a truly groundbreaking perspective. All human babies are born prematurely and develop special, new brain cells four months after birth. Every human’s development in the womb and particularly in these early stages of life can, therefore, be affected by developmental delay, which can blight childhood and marginalize a child at school. Since our brains continue to grow, however, the symptoms can also be treated. This book explains the background to human developmental delay and offers advice on how to get the best assessment for your child and an explanation of what the examination must include; the effects—good and bad—of certain foods on the brain; exercises and computer programs that you can use to expand your child’s neural function; and case histories of children on whom this plan has worked. In the single biggest breakthrough in the history of learning difficulties, this guide explains the cause of developmental delay syndromes using simple, easy-to-follow tips to show how to greatly reduce the risk of a child suffering from them, and gives advice on what can be done to treat those children that do.

5-0 out of 5 stars Is that My Child?
Excellent book. It is sound and very informative. We have implemented many of his ideas with great success.I recommend highly to anyone with a child suffering from any of the disorders mentioned.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cautiously Optimistic
While I do not agree with all of Pauc's assertions or believe that this is a miracle that can cure every child based on the dubious evidence of a a few testimonials, I do believe the exercise and dietary information in this book may be helpful. If you read past the notion of 'cure' and have realistc expectations, you may be pleased to find an approach that moves beyond labeling and symptom management to one that just might make some improvements in the brain function of your child. The theory is that the brain continues to develop and make new connections all the time and that we can have a positive impact on its' function largely with exercises, food and nutritional supplements. I imagine the level and degree of improvement must widely vary from child to child. So while I am wary ofthose who pedal hope to people who are desperate, I am cautiously optimistic that this book really does have something to offer - improved brain function may not be a 'cure' but I certainly do want my child to have the benefit of it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Breakthrough to New Understanding
This is a 'must read' for parents and all professionals who have contact with the young.
Of particular signicance is the section dealing with the importance of nutrition. Food for serious thought as well as for the brain !

5-0 out of 5 stars A label only tells about symptoms, not the causes.
Pauc's "the Learning Disability Myth" is fast, clear and easy to read. Using all the latest neurological research, he cuts through the educational jargon that gives a name to your child's difficulties, but would not get rid of what is actually causing the symptoms.
Taking a health history of the child, and looking at the symptoms, he shows how to design an exercise program that will change the function of the brain. Combined with restructioning the connections in the brain he urges providing the chemical support the brain needs by the simple method of changing the child's diet.
Unlike most books on the subject which fail to take advantage of the research by neurologists that the brain is plastic, he suggests methods to give your child the best organized brain possible.
Pauc lets you know that a label is not a life sentence and that you can help your child. ... Read more

Product Description
The first edition of The Gift of ADHD revolutionized the way parents understood their children's attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and offered new hope to children and adults alike struggling with ADHD symptoms. That book suggested that many of the traits common among kids with ADHD are expressions of deeper gifts: a powerful imagination, a great capacity for insight, and unusual intuition, to name a few.

Now in its second edition, The Gift of ADHD reviews the remarkable new ADHD research that increasingly supports author Lara Honos-Webb's view that ADHD is a gift rather than a hindrance. The new edition explains why ADHD is an asset in the digital age and shows readers how they can help their children to enhance these gifts by channeling ADHD-related traits into productive outlets. It includes exercises for helping parents cope with feelings of failure they may be experiencing and offers advice for navigating education and mental health systems to their children's advantage. Parents also learn to reverse their children's negative ADHD behaviors. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Reckless and misinformed
This book reads like an anti-psychiatry diatribe, with the author clearly having an antimedication bias. How can any self-respecting publisher foist this on unsuspecting parents?

I see this book, and her others, as cynical career moves on the part of this author, telling frightened parents what they want to hear.Their children don't have a disorder; they have a gift.Parents who fall for this theory might have children who never leave the nest, because they will be unable. And then also might be askingsome tough questions, such as "why didn't you get help for me when you could?" Parents who believe this are in denial, and risk doing their child great damage.

I know for a fact that my own ADHD made me more prone to seeking answers such as contained here, because dealing with a "disorder" seemed too hard. But the truth is, it's the other way around. Maintaining the fantasy that my children and I are simply gifted was tough. A reality-based life is much easier, and we're all happier.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dangerous misinformation
As a 30-something with lifelong ADHD Inattentive and mother to two ADHD Inattentive boys, this book made me furious.Stimulant medications do NOT make me "high" or feel better about myself. The most common scenario for me is, 3 hours after I take (maximum allowed dosage) morning meds I fall asleep, and get the most restful sleep of the day/night.Meds slow my brain down enough to be able to deal with fewer things at a time.Meds are not administered in my household to "placate adults and teachers and force exuberant children to conform to an intolerant society," as this book says almost to the word.Meds are to help us function at the best of our abilities along with therapy and counseling.I made the decision to try meds for my older son after six months of denial, anger, and hundreds of hours of research. After all that research I realized I had the same issues.I have years of CBT therapy as well as meds, and strongly believe both should be considered important.

Please do lots of research if you have, or have a child with, ADHD/ADD.Any ONE source is not enough, utilize as many as you have access to.

4-0 out of 5 stars ADHD IS a Gift
I heard a radio interview with the author and bought the book a few minutes later. Although the book is written with children in mind, as an adult diagnosed with ADHD, I was able to identify with so much in this book. I attained a greater understanding of my "gifts" and how to harness them. I think parents and teachers would likely find this book very useful as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Gift ADHD
This book is a must for parents of children diagnosed with ADHD.It is filled with activities to help children overcome their difficulties. It also puts the condition under a different/more acceptable light.I picked up this book at the public library and after having read it, I had to purchase it so I can refer to it when needed.I am an elementary school counselor and I am always trying to assist parents and now I am suggesting that they read/own this book.I also purchased the activity guide which I plan to use at school when working with students' behavior.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not empirically-supported
This book does a good job reminding everyone to focus on the positive in youth who are so commonly caught in negative interactions with parents, teachers, and peers. However, the author is not an ADHD researcher and ignores decades of empirical research about ADHD as a neurodevelopmental disorder and ways in which ADHD heightens risk for poor outcomes continuing through adulthood. It is unfortunate that some families will read this book and not realize, just because the author has a PhD, that she is not a scientist in the ADHD field. ... Read more

Product Description

Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a disorder that afflicts anywhere from 2 to 5 percent of the adult population (roughly 8-10 million Americans). Among several therapeutic treatment approaches available as a supplement or alternative to medication, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) has emerged as the most successful and has the strongest current evidence base of support, while integrative treatment programs that combine CBT and prescription drugs have shown even more promise. In this volume, Ramsay and Rostain provide an overview of symptoms, assessment and diagnosis issues for adult ADHD. Utilizing research, case examples, and a combined biological and psychosocial treatment approach, the authors discuss the many complicated factors that go into treatment, relapse prevention, and long-term management of adult ADHD, including particular focus on comorbidity and medication issues.

5-0 out of 5 stars C-B Therapy for Adult ADHD
Excellent resource for mental health professionals.Suspect it is not as "user friendly" for patients.Well written with good ADHD strategies.
Research is interesting but I wish it even more directed toward specific techniques.Case studies and examples are excellent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Should be part of every ADHD therapist's toolbox
Psychologist Russell Ramsay and psychiatrist Anthony Rostain have written a remarkably helpful book. I recommended it highly for any professional treating ADHD and any mental healthcare consumer who wants to know what constitutes effective therapy for ADHD.Moreover, it's well-written and highly practical.

As a support-group leader for adults with ADHD, parents of children with ADHD, and the partners of adults with ADHD, I've seen how many people go astray when trying to find therapy for Adult ADHD. They often assume that therapy is therapy, and it doesn't matter if the clinician doesn't understand ADHD. But it does matter. It matters a lot. That's why I am so grateful to skilled clinicians like the University of Pennsylvania's Ramsay and Rostain for sharing their model.

Unless a therapist understands the unique nature of ADHD and has solid skills in helping the person understand their own neurobiology and develop effective strategies, therapy can go nowhere fast. It can even make things worse.ADHD symptoms might be misattributed to many other factors, such as a dysfunctional childhood, for example. In such cases, the person ends up spending months (years?) talking about their dysfunctional childhood--all the while feeling even less empowered and more hopeless.

This book helps to empower clinician and patient alike, and it also helps the clinician to know where medication ends and therapy begins for ADHD.

Finally, it's extremely important to know that CBT requires a special focus when applied to ADHD, as described by the authors.Traditional CBT alone is not enough and can sometimes do more harm than good.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful in generating ideas for treatment
This book was easy to read and extremely helpful in generating ideas for treatment of ADHD clients, even those who may not be able to afford medication. After reading this book, I was better able to develop a treatment plan with my client and since then, he has found ways to manage his disorder.I think that this book is even a good "refresher" on CBT that can be applied to so many different situations.VERY HELPFUL - Thank you for the work! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Just returned from meeting Dr. Weathers
After getting over the shock that in 4th grade a teacher questioned if my son had ADD/ADHD ...I began to research.I had many questions, why had no other teacher asked this before? Why had I, an educator myself, never noticed this? Why could my son, Jack, sit for hours and read through instruction manuals and constuct complicated Legos structures and put together a 1300 piece K'Nex roller coaster on his own...but not complete paper pencil tasks in English????How could he have developed ADD/ADHD suddenly? All of this flew in the face of what I thought I knew about ADD/ADHD.

If Jack was hyper and couldn't focused as the teachers said...why could he do the above things that obviously required concentration and self disclipline???Why, Why why?

Dr. Weathers provided answers that rang true for me (and what I learned as a degreed teacher from Texas A&M) and more importantly for my child.
After reading of both of Dr. Weathers'books, and exchanging many emails to Dr. Weathers about Jack and our family, we decided to go visit him.It was the best thing I ever did for my child, our family and my marriage.

As Dr. Weathers books explain, children don't like to sit in a desk all day long and do worksheets. It is boring, and one can easily develop bad feelings/anxiety about the thought of doing this every day all day long...the desire to escape is strong, even if it's a mental esacpe, hence ADD/ADHD.
When you visit Dr. Weathers, you work through your feelings of anxiety, guilt, fear and anything else you are dealing with by using the EDMR technology.EDMR is a procedure has been around since the Vietnam War, and is highly a highly successful mode of thepary.

Dr. Weathers gave me answers to my questions and so much more!He helped my son work through his issues, and tweaked our parenting style a little. My husband even worked through a nervous tic he'd been dealing for 35 years! Pretty amazing considering we only spent 3 days with Dr. Weathers! But again, it's not magic, it is common sense.Tics are an outward expression of anxiety. If you deal with the anxiety you have no more tics.Similarly, ADD/ADHD is a result of anxiety if you extinguish the feelings of frustration and anxiety you can handle the task.

Read the books, email and ask questions to Dr. Weathers, and make an educated decision...I am glad I did!It was the best thing I ever did for my child and our family!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Helpful for older children or adults
I read the book and found it truly helpful.I am a single parent with a six year old in kindergarted with ADHD. I will not put my son on any kind of drugs for ADHD so I used a big chunk of my savings and off we went to Spokane, WA.I feel that the treatment helped me with past hurts but it is something you must keep doing. We flew in from New York area so that would be impossible.A weekend is just not enough time.He did gave me many ideas for helping my son but he is very strict. If your child doesn't want to go in the machine he will be in a time out room all day if necessary. My son told me that he fell asleep in the pod once and he didn't like being in there.I really didn't see where a six year old could benefit.I recommend that the child be older to understand the pod.All that money and one of those days he spent a good part in the time out room.I almost left but then I ended up staying.I could have seen a specialist locally and saved myself a lot of money.I highly reccomend for people of Washington State but to fly that far for a weekend of treatment did not work for us.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good understanding of ADHD
I haven't read all of this book but what I have read has been very helpful.I highly recommend it to anyone with a child with ADHD.Good luck.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a drug-free approach for common learning disability
A refreshing look at the symptoms of ADHD. The book makes a convincing case for a drug-free treatment of learning disabilities. The author seems well informed and is very helpful with answering any concerns a reader may have,A must read for parents with children who have a difficult time with school work.

5-0 out of 5 stars It works!
We tried the approach in this book out of sheer desperation. We have two teenagers, one with ADD and one with ADHD.Over a period of 3 years, we had tried every medication available, with marginal results. The meds did help, but they felt like a bandaid on a gaping wound. The dosage we ended up with was too low to really do the job, yet we couldn't go higher and risk more weight loss or slowed growth -- at 14, my daughter was 4'6" and weighed only 62 pounds, and I suspected the meds were keeping her from entering puberty as well.I began searching for an alternative and found Dr. Weathers' book.

Reading his book, I began to feel hope for the first time that maybe we really didn't have to live with this forever. His theories made sense to me, and I saw my kids in them.Admittedly, the book isn't of much practical help by itself. It helps you understand your child, but you can't really implement the theories without going for his treatment. The good news, though, is that the treatment WORKS!We were desperate enough for a solution that we tried it, and it's the best decision we ever made.

It's hard to believe that four days can make such a difference. The kids have now been off their meds for 5 months and we don't miss them in the least. They have each gained 20 pounds, and neither of them exhibits the hyper, distractible behavior that led us to try the meds to begin with.In fact, their behavior, schoolwork, and social interactions are under much better control than they ever were with the meds.I highly recommend Dr. Weathers' book, and I even more highly recommend a trip to Spokane! You won't regret it! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable addition to anyone's library with concern to ADHD.
If you have just discovered you have ADHD, a relative or a friend has it, this is one of the best books available to get quick and easy to understand information. Eileen Bailey and Donald Haupt, M.D. have done an outstanding job of tackling, compiling and describing information about ADHD - even going so far as to discuss, clarify and debunk many of the various rumors and myths about ADHD. Adult ADHD is real and one of the most important and beneficial ways of coping with ADHD is to learn as much about it as you can - this is a great book to start your journey. As an author of 3 books about my experiences with ADHD I can confidently say I know a thing or two about this disorder. And still, I found much helpful information within the pages of this Guide which helped me expand my awareness and understanding of ADHD.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Adult ADHD is a valuable addition to anyone's library with concern to ADHD.
