5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent clinical resource!
I am a Registered Nurse and I also have ADD.I was not diagnosed until I was in my 50's.I bought this book to learn about the condition and also to help other adults in my practice. It *is* technical, but it has a wealth of information regarding ADD as well as concommitant conditions such as dyslexia. Both of these conditions often occur together.I found it to be very helpful in navigating the process of going through the testing and considering which medication would be best for me.As an RN I strongly encourage any adult who thinks they might have ADD to prepare themselves with as much knowledge about this condition as possible *before* they begin the processing of being tested and diagnosed so you can be your own advocate!

A great companion book is "You Mean I'm Not Lazy, Crazy, or Stupid?" by Kate Kelly and Peggy Ramundo. It is written with the layperson in mind and is one of the BEST books I've read regarding adult ADD, especially for women.

5-0 out of 5 stars Concise, readable with up-to-date research
Concise information in an easily read format. Bulleted lists and charts were helpful, and specific information was easy to find. Clinicians and clients both will find this useful for themselves and in helping educate others. I found the neurology research particularly interesting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Update on Adult ADHD

This was an excellent update on diagnosis and treatment of adult ADHD.It was brief, to the point and informative.I would recommend it to any psychologist or other mental health professional working with this population.

Product Description

This wise and informative guide applies Stanley Greenspan’s much admired developmental approach to a very common disorder. In his distinctive and original view, ADHD is not a single problem, but rather a set of common symptoms that arise from several different sensory, motor, and self-regulation problems. As in his highly successful earlier books and in his practice, Greenspan emphasizes the role of emotion, seeking the root of the condition and rebuilding the foundations of healthy development. Overcoming ADHD steers away from the pitfalls of labeling, or of simply stamping out symptoms with medication, and demonstrates Greenspan’s abiding belief in the growth and individual potential of each child.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing book, great for parents, teachers & childcare providers
This is an amazing book great for anyone who wants to help children.Even if your medicating your child you should read this, as the medications don't help if the child has a learning difficulty and this book will assist you in help them learn.

5-0 out of 5 stars Do All Kids with ADHD Need Pills?

Author Greenspan's book Overcoming ADHD promises parents, caregivers, and teachers, guidelines for helping children with ADHD--without resorting to pills--the current solution to help such children today. He feels that all too often those who demonstrate ADHD behaviors are put in programs that do not focus on the underlying reasons for a child's difficulty with self-control, paying attention, and remaining focused.

Included in his list of influences affecting "attention" are cultural expectations and possible biological factors. Most importantly, however, Greenspan feels that careful consideration of any child's strengths and weaknesses is the most beneficial way to construct a realistic program for a child who appears hyperactive and inattentive.

In its earliest pages, Overcoming ADHD discusses seven key factors of an interceptive approach. If after a twelve month period of serious attempts to improve these factors, only then should a parent or caregiver seek further professional help for a suspect child. So often, it might seem easier to "give the kid a pill" rather than consistently try to move along the spectrum of steps listed below.

An ADHD Person Can Learn How To:
1. Move their body and its parts in a way that is age-appropriate.
2. Remember the sequence of thought patterns and activities.
3. Reduce over-activity or under-activity.
4. Think more reflectively.
5. Feel self-confident enough to lower anxiety.
6. Interact meaningfully with family members.
7. Live safely in a distracting environment.

Overcoming ADHD provides a variety of suggestions a parent, caregiver, teacher, or counselor can follow, to move a child along all of the seven steps listed above. There are far too many suggestions to mention here. The important thing is that each proposed game, exercise, or activity is explained in easy-to-follow detail and must be consistently used.

Especially important are the activities to help children feel good about themselves. The book tells of Mark, a boy with low self-esteem (#5-above). After talking with both Mark and his parents, it surfaced that Mark's mother was overwhelmed by her son's problems. His father simply felt Mark was acting out in school and tended to be harsh with him.

After some counseling, Mark's father started having hang-out time on a regular basis with his son (#6-above). The two began to bond. Father saw Mark in a different light and took an active role in his interest in magic.

Since Mark had particular difficulty sequencing thoughts and activities (#2-above), his parents worked with an occupational therapist to set up a meaningful program. Mark was slowly taught to remember, and carry out a sequence of directions. Simple magic tricks from a local store became his reward for carrying a sequence of four directions correctly.

Mark's muscular coordination (#1-above) improved with regular use of balance beam activities that increased in difficulty. Eventually, the eight-year-old learned to perform a magic trick while talking and standing on the beam. This improved his overall coordination.

Mark's family and interventionists played many "Regulation" games with him, along with a game Overcoming ADHD calls "Thinking About Tomorrow". There is no need to mention either here since both are adequately explained on pages 112-115. How they helped Mark is fascinating.

The important issue is that this child's abilities improved in many interrelated areas. As they changed, so did his self-esteem and his overall school performance. Did it happen overnight or in a week? No, it took many months, not just one or two. But family, school, and therapists, all working together to pull Mark through the seven steps mentioned above particularly in a loving, safe, dynamic home environment, accomplished a change in this boy that will last a lifetime--and the magic is, it was done without pills.

I would highly recommend that any parent, educator, doctor, psychologist, psychiatrist, or minister should read Overcoming ADHD and apply its suggestions to their charges, if they seriously want to help a child or adult--typically labeled ADHD. The book is written in layman's terms. It is fascinating. It is extremely well organized. It is hopeful. It is easy to follow. It just might start a more promising life for a problem child

OVERCOMING ADHD: HELPING YOUR CHILD BECOME CALM, ENGAGED AND FOCUSED - WITHOUT A PILL discusses the range of symptoms that form ADHD as a syndrome, relating them to different sensory, motor and self-regulation issues and discussing the role of emotions in the development of the nervous system. It shows how kids can learn to engage, understand their senses and maintain focus without medication and offers an alternative set of ideas for parents and educators seeking different management approaches. ... Product Description
Currently, 6-9% of all children are diagnosed with ADHD and there hasbeen an explosion in recent years in the discussion of ADHD—itsprevalence, its diagnosis, its importance to parents and theirchildren.
Yet despite this awareness, many clinicians as well as the general public continue to under-appreciate the significance of ADHD as it manifests itself in adults.

What happens to all these ADHD kids when they grow up? ADHD isn’t like a cold or the flu—it doesn’t just go away all of the time. As a child grows and matures, it is possible that the symptoms lessen, and in some cases adults are able to overcome the disorder, but it doesn’t usually just vanish on its own. At least 40-70% of those diagnosed with this disorder as kids will have it persist when they are adults; however, mental health professionals often overlook ADHD symptoms and continue calling their adult patients who suffer from it anxious or depressed, or diagnose them with a personality disorder. Family members may also consider adults with procrastination issues, inattentiveness, and distractibility lazy or malingering, when in fact they are suffering from ADHD.

Here Joel Young MD, who has been treating and researching ADHD for more than15 years, takes a comprehensive look at ADHD in adults. As an accurate diagnosis is essential to a patient’s successful treatment, the book begins by detailing how clinicians can provide the most accurate ADHD diagnosis. Once established, the basic diagnostic process begins. This includes obtaining a careful medical history to rule out medical problems that may mimic the symptoms of ADHD, taking a psychiatric history and carefully considering any family or genetic history of medical and psychiatric problems. Some helpful tools used to evaluate quickly and comprehensively distressed patients are presented.

Comorbidities are extremely common among patients with ADHD. Emphasis in the book is placed on the most common ADHD comorbidities, including mood and anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, oppositional defiant disorders, eating disorders and learning disabilities. The book also details the different types of ADHD that clinicians may encounter: ADHD (predominately hyperactive/impulsive subtype) is manifested in people who are hyperactive, and experience serious problems at work and at home. They are fidgety and impatient and may be the most commonly diagnosed adults. ADHD (predominately-inattentive subtype) manifests itself in patients who are typically, but not exclusively, female. As children, these women were inattentive and distractible, underperforming but not demonstrating overt behaviors typical of their hyperactive brethren. Their conditions may be complicated by factors like anxiety, depression, and fatigue. Even as adults, most clinicians overlook their symptoms.

Other chapters focus on diagnostic and treatment issues in specific populations: adolescents and common adolescent mindsets; women with ADHD; substance abuse; psychotherapy and coaching as treatments and medications. The medications chapter will review the use of antidepressant and mood stabilizing medications taken in concert with stimulants or non-stimulants, and other medication combinations need for conditions comorbid with ADHD. Finally, the author concludes by presenting findings that self-referred patients with fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome have high rates of ADHD. Young proposes that extreme distractibility may intensify the patient’s pain perception.

Overall this book provides clinicians and family members with a concise yet comprehensive overview of the many issues associated with ADHD throughout adolescence and adulthood. ... Read more

Easy to read, great guide for ADD/ ADHD patients, their parents or medical practitioners!I
I would recommend this book to anyone who's life was touched by ADD sickness or simply out of curiosity would like to know about it.

4-0 out of 5 stars ADD - the 20 hour solution
This is an excellent book - it is more focussed on a lay-person's introduction to neurofeedback treatments for ADHD, great for parents. It is not really technical enough for a practitioner or someone wanting to learn more about the clinical application of neurofeedback.

A large section at the back of the book is dedicated to an index of worldwide practitioners who can treat ADHD with this drug-free approach

4-0 out of 5 stars A Neurotherapist's Review
As a neurofeedback clinician, I have given this book to parents when they are considering brain-training as an option for their child.I have to say that I'm not wild about the title, as it suggests that in less than a day, the ADD will be gone, instead of it being 40 sessions at a half-hour each. The book is a simple, quick read and does a good job of explaining ADD/ADHD and sympathizing with parents who are trying their best to cope with a child who exhibits some of the symptoms inherent in the disorder. It doesn't go into any detail on the development or mechanisms behind neurofeedback, however, and is kind of showy and overly-excitable (too many exclamation marks) about how great training is.Don't get me wrong - I know it's great and I know it works, but there's just something about the book that seems to be over-selling the technique in a hokey way - like their on the home shopping network or something.I find myself more often referring clients to read "A Symphony in the Brain" or one of Daniel Amen's books instead, or else forewarning them that this book is a bit over-the-top excited about neurofeedback.

If you've ever dealt with an ADD/HD child you know the frustration of a child fidgeting, disrupting others and needing constant supervision. If you are that frustrated, just imagine the frustration of the child. The authors have offered us a clear and concise look at ADD/HD.They have offered us an option that does not include medication.

Matthew's parents and teachers are at their wits end. They sincerely want to help Matthew but don't know how."This book is about helping kids like Matthew:ADD/ADHD children who possess the potential to succeed, but who chronically function below their abilities because they cannot regulate themselves. `ADD: The 20-Hour Solution' describes and examines a revolutionary hi-tech methodology called EEG biofeedback (also called neurofeedback) that has unequivocally demonstrated its efficacy in helping chronically inattentive, distractible, impulsive, and hyperactive children regulate themselves."

"The pluses of EEG biofeedback training in treating ADD/ADHD children are extensive. This quick and painless treatment:

- Provides a viable alternative to psychotropic medication
- Trains children to self-regulate naturally and safely
- Trains children to adjust automatically to changing demands and conditions
- Emancipates children from continually professional supervision
- Creates a synergistic effect that can help other treatments work more effectively
- Permits parents to become involved directly in the treatment process"

Steinberg and Othmer discuss ADD/ADHD in terms that a layman can understand. Parents and teachers will be wondering why this book wasn't written years ago.The authors propose that ADD should stand for Arousal Disregulation Disorder. They made an excellent case for their opinion. In detail they discuss Matthew, a child that has ADD/ADHD.I found myself sympathizing with Matthew; he cannot control his fidgets and distractions. He soon becomes labeled as trouble and that label follows him from year to year."Matthew had trouble staying in his seat and keeping his hands to himself.Note that he was `verbally exuberant when others wanted him to be quiet, and ... withdrawn and often clueless when people demanded answers...' Matthew was simply lost in an eternal maze of jumbled, intense feelings, sporadic mood shifts, changes in energy level and focus, and incomplete thoughts. These are hallmark signs of disregulation."

This book is well written and documented. As I stated previously it is written in terms that laymen can understand.I highly recommend this book to teachers, parents, grandparents and all who deal with children with ADD/ADHD.I believe "ADD: The 20-Hour Solution" is the answer for many children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Only a new, more effective way.

The ADHD Rating Scale-IV is a reliable and easy-to-administer instrument both for diagnosing ADHD in children and adolescents and for assessing treatmentresponse. Containing 18 items, the scale is linked directly to DSM-IV diagnostic criteria for ADHD. 5-0 out of 5 stars Valid and inexpensive ADHD rating scale.
Description: The ADHD IV Manual enables one to discover if a school-aged child or teen has ADHD.The manual includes parent and teacher rating forms for ADHD, and norms for boys and girls at different ages.

Background: ADHD is usually diagnosed using the standard for psychiatric diagnoses, the "Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, Forth Edition" (DSM-IV). These criteria are based on and revised to reflect the most recent research.By norming the DSM-IV criteria for ADHD, Professor DuPaul made the diagnosis of ADHD far easier and more reliable.

Expert Recommendation: I first bought the ADHD-IV manual when a well-known investigator on the treatment of ADHD, Russ Barkley of Harvard University, recommended the ADHD-IV checklist at the Sandestin, Florida ADHD conference in 2000.

This test costs less: Dr. DuPaul's test protocol cannot be copyrighted because he used the DSM-IV criteria as the text of this test. So, there's no additional expense for using the test beyond the purchase price of the manual. One doesn't have to pay more for extra test protocols. The SNAP and the Connors Rating Scales are good tests of ADHD, but they add a cost for protocols. The Connors Rating Scales starter kit cost from five to ten times the price of the ADHD-IV manual and requires that one pay approximately $2 for each additional form.

Drawback- the ADHD-IV has no medication scale.

Importance of medication: In the late 1990s, the Multimodal Treatment studies compared the effectiveness of every known promising treatment for ADHD, pooling subjects from many medical schools across the US.The Multimodal studies found that titrating stimulant medication was, by far, the most effective treatment for ADHD.Psychological treatments can add by further improving both treatment effectiveness and long-term results.

Limits of Medication: According to Bill Pelham of the University of Buffalo, stimulant medications appear to "normalize" ADHD children, but doesn't treat all symptoms.Carolyn Webster-Stratton of the University of Washington showed that helping these children learn to recognize emotions and to respond well to problem situations can produce an impressively better long-term outcome.

Cautions about medication: Bill Pelham (called `Mr. Ritalin' on the television-newsmagazine 20-20) said that overmedication of stimulants should be suspected if the child loses his or her sparkle. If a child diagnosed as ADHD gets worse when given stimulant medication, more easily angered or hyper, one might be wise to have the child evaluated to rule out a possible bipolar disorder. If stimulant medication increases tics or cursing, rule out Tourette's Syndrome. If medication doesn't help and the child is obsessed with specific topics, has severe interpersonal problems and tremendous difficulty recognizing the emotions of others, rule out Asperberger's Syndrome.Asperberger's is like ADHD on steroids. It has symptoms similar to that of ADHD, but to an extreme. It is quite rare, but early intervention can help.

Connors included a medication scale: The Connors Rating Scales have a subscale that measures the effect of medication on ADHD.That scale may make the Connors more useful for titrating medication. However, as noted before, the Connors Scales are much more expensive.

In summary, the ADHD-IV scale is the most cost-effective instrument available for screening for ADHD.It's derivation from the DSM-IV makes it valid and reliable. The cost of using it is limited to the price of the manual.

More information: Those who wish to learn more about ADHD rating scales might be interested in a succinct article on the topic by Dr. Jay A. Salpekar in the Summer 2006 edition of Children's National News: an electronic newsletter for pediatricians. Some other sources of reliable information on ADHD are ChADD (Children and Adults with ADHD) and the National Institute of Mental Health.

The treatment model integrates education, medication, coaching, and cognitive behavioral therapy to go beyond what traditional therapeutic techniques can offer. Written for the busy professional in private practice, it provides everything a therapist or ADHD coach needs to know to help these clients quickly and effectively.

... it is a real pleasure to read Tuckman's superbly rendered book on ADHD in adults, for it is so well-reasoned, science-based, information-rich, to the point, and finally--useful! Apart from wishing I had written it, I sincerely wish that you will read it.
--Russell A. Barkley, Ph.D., clinical professor of psychiatry at Medical University of South Carolina Charleston and research professor of psychiatry at SUNY Upstate Medical University at Syracuse

Tuckman has filled a huge gap in our understanding of adults who suffer from ADHD...This book is a valuable contribution to the literature and will be a treasured resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars comprehensive, substantial and well written
I am a mental health professional and I found this book comprehensive and substantial. It is actually one of the best books I've read on ADHD and could serve as a model for books on other diagnoses. The diagnostic and testing sections were particularly useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have book on adult ADHD
I was extremely impressed with this book.Dr. Tuckman lays out a thorough overview of Adult ADHD that has been invaluable to me in my work as an LPC.Though one hears a great deal about children and ADHD, finding information on adults with this problem is harder to find.Well, not any longer! This book is all I needed to give me a thorough understanding of adult ADHD. I have also gone onto his website and downloaded his handouts which he makes available to individuals.I would recommend this book to anyone who is working with adults in the mental health field.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding tool for clinicians, and for higher reading level adults with ADHD
I am a psychotherapy clinician who works with a multitude of disorders, of which ADHD is one of them.My knowledge of ADHD is sufficient, but I found this book to be exceptionally informational and written tightly. The author does not rely upon much anecdote nor non-researched gibberish so common in books on adult ADHD.Nearly all points are backed by solid research evidence, yet the tone is easily accessible for clinicians and for those adults with an average-to-above-average reading level.

Dr. Tuckman has written a concise, exceptionally well-organized, and practically helpful book on the subject.I am generally quite critical with many books on ADHD, because so many blend myth with science. The book is outstanding, because it leaves the reader with general information and specific content ideas to utilize for helping adults with ADHD work through the significant challenges inherent in the condition.

It is obvious that Dr. Tuckman has a wealth of experience working firsthand with adults with ADHD, understands the science of the disorder, and blends the two with sufficient depth and expertise.

5-0 out of 5 stars Take This to Your Clinician!
This book lays it on the line for clinicians who may not know as much as they need to know to treat a client with ADHD. Many people are undiagnosed or miss-diagnosed and continue to struggle with a condition that isn't so difficult to manage, if they know how. If more mental health professionals would read this book more people would be helped.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for every clinician.
Dr. Tuckman has successfully written a practical and easy to read guide to working with adults with ADHD.This book is a great resource, not only for those with ADHD, but for other clients struggling with similar issues (e.g., time management problems, procrastination, impulsiveness, etc.).I have found his writing and treatment approach to be straight forward and well received by clients.Additionally, Dr. Tuckman provides the reader with helpful forms and client handouts free of charge, which are available on his website. This book is a must read for those in clinical practice.

Product Description
Oh, my child will grow out of it is a common refrain from parents of children with ADHD. Unfortunately, it is increasingly clear that many children do not grow out of their ADHD. Instead, these children will mature into adults who will experience continued difficulties related to their disorder throughout adulthood. Many of these adults with ADHD will seek treatment to alleviate these difficulties, and while some will find medication to adequately treat their symptoms, for others, adjunctive treatments will also play an essential role in helping them achieve desired results in their daily lives. In Nonmedication Treatments for Adult ADHD: Evaluating Impact on Daily Functioning and Well-Being, Dr. J. Russell Ramsay provides a comprehensive review of the current status of nonmedication interventions available for adults with ADHD. After introducing and reviewing the history and features of ADHD in adults, Dr. Ramsay explores a wide range of treatment options available to clinicians today. Chapter topics include psychosocial treatment, academic support and accommodations for postsecondary students, career counseling and workplace support, relationships and social functioning, neurofeedback and neurocognitive training, and complementary and alternative treatments. Practicing clinicians, clinicians-in-training, and researchers searching for a current summary of the nonmedication treatment options and a map to future research will find this volume to be a tremendous resource. ... Product Description
Autism is an epidemic: It has spiked 1,500 percent in the last twenty years. ADHD, asthma and allergies have also skyrocketed over the same time period. One of these conditions now strikes one in every three children in America. But there is hope. Leading medical innovator Kenneth Bock, M.D., has helped change the lives of more than a thousand children, and in this important book, with a comprehensive program that targets all four of the 4-A disorders, he offers help to children everywhere. This is the book that finally puts hope within reach.

Doctors have generally overlooked the connections among the 4-A disorders, despite their concurrent rise and the presence of many medical clues. For years the medical establishment has considered autism medically untreatable and utterly incurable, and has limited ADHD treatment mainly to symptom suppression. Dr. Bock and his colleagues, however, have discovered a solution – one that goes to the root of the problem. They have found that deadly modern toxins, nutritional deficiencies, metabolic imbalances, genetic vulnerabilities and assaults on the immune and gastrointestinal systems trigger most of the symptoms of the 4-A disorders, resulting in frequent misdiagnosis and untold misery.

Dr. Bock’s remarkable Healing Program, drawing on medical research and based on years of clinical success, offers a safe, sensible solution that is individualized to each child to help remedy these root causes. The biomedical approach to autism, ADHD, and the other 4-A epidemics, as innovated by Dr. Bock and some of America’s finest integrative physicians, is one of the most promising and exciting medical movements of our time.

In this eminently readable account, written by Dr. Bock in collaboration with critically acclaimed author Cameron Stauth, you will meet children and parents whose dramatic stories will inspire you to change the life of your own child. This program may be the help that you have been praying for.

5-0 out of 5 stars 3 of my children recovered or improved SIGNIFICANTLY from following this book - You Must Get It.
I have 4 children. One with Aspergers, one with ADD and one with Allergies, the other one shows no signs of these things. I saw my friend's son go from not talking and sitting alone to running, talking and playing. She told me it was because of following the things she learned in this book and loaned it to me. After reading it I was amazed. How could I have been so blind? I started implementing what was in this book and within 2 weeks were were able to take my daughter with the high functioning Autism off of one of her meds for the first time in 4 years. Then my daughter with Allergies stopped needing meds and stopped needing to carry a box of tissues around. My son with ADD and some signs of Aspergers broke the diet with a cheeseburger one night and the next day the school called and asked what had happened to him. He was dazed, spinning, couldn't listen or follow the class and was totally out of it. Being a skeptic myself I was shocked that gluten could have this much of effect on him. after 3 or 4 days my son started to do well again. The vits. they suggest, the diet they suggest, we have only followed about 5% of it and I can say that my kids are 50% recovered. You must read this book. It is not nearly as hard as I thought it would be. I am about to upload a show about it on youtube to share the knowledge I have gained. [...] If you have a child or person in your family with any of these problems and you have tried everything and nothing works, try this. I have been researching and trying things for YEARS and this is the first thing that actually helped my children in a life changing way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Read for ANYONE who works with kids!
I don't have children diagnosed with these conditions but I found the information in this book so informative! Anyone with kids should read this book. It really highlights what American children are going through and provides insight to so many factors of their little bodies. I have been encouraging all my friends, family, and teachers I know to read this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for every family with learning challenges!
Where do you turn when you find out your child has special learning requirements? It can be confusing, overwhelming and frustrating. Socially ADDept is the bestlearning tool a parent canuse to help their child. Itis clear, practical, easy to read and fun for kids and parents to usetogether. Dr. Giler has created the next best tool to having her in yourhome as a guide and expert.-Cherie Carter-Scott, Ph.D., author of"If Life is a Game, These are the Rules"

5-0 out of 5 stars Kids Guide to Making Friends
When a friend recommended "Socially ADDept," Dr. Janet Z. Giler's manual of social skills for children with ADHD, I accepted the suggestion with some reluctance. Like every other parent with an ADHD kid, I'm already drowning in pedagogical advice. If raising one of these children were assimple as "love and logic" or "parenting without punishment" these kidswouldn't be any harder to raise than all the others. Pedagogical sloganssell books, but they don't work with bundles of hyperactivity like myAlexander, who's incorrigible social skills have made it difficult to finda baby-sitter willing to spend an evening with him, let alone a teacherwilling to address his academics.

While many schools have programs toimprove reading, writing, and arithmetic, they lack any formal curriculumfor the fourth "R"- arguably the most important one- social refinement.Enter Giler, who's manual for parents of children with ADHD and/or learningdisabilities brings a refreshingly clear, simple, step-by-step, commonsense approach to teaching social skills. Those basic, self-evident skillsthat most of us learn by osmosis, but completely elude ADHD kids like myAlexander.

Giler develops eight, concise lesson plans that guide parentsin teaching kids how to develop congenial relations with peers, teachersand siblings. From proper greetings to managing anger, "Socially ADDept"deciphers the complex rules of none-verbal language into friendly,bite-sized morsels that kids can understand. Somewhat like a "How ThingsWork" of behavior, untangling tricky situations like joining an ongoinggame, in simple step-by-step fashion. Step 1) "Say `hi.' 2) Pay attentionto see if you get a friendly response. 3) Make a comment about the game. Then waituntil you get a friendly response before asking, 4) `Can Iplay?'"

I read through Giler's chapter on "active" listening with thedoubting bias of a parent who's been-there, done that. Just come to ourhouse for a visit, and you'll hear the mantra "Listen to me!" repeated withprickly frustration. Our son, Alexander, "hears" what we're saying, butdoesn't give a slightest hint of interest. We reprimand him, and he replieswith exasperation, "I am listening!" His ears work and his mind process allthe input. But he ignores the body language that closes the "feedbackloop," as Giler describes it, letting us know we're being heard.

With"Socially ADDept" in hand I walked into Alexander's room. He sat on thefloor with an origami book, folding a sheet of blue paper into a peacock. As usual, he didn't even look up at me when I told him about the"friendship" lessons I wanted us try. Following Giler's suggestion, I askedhim to list his best qualities; I knew this question would get him talking. While Alexander described himself with great earnestness, I mirrored hisinattentive stile of listing. Alexander's voice grew louder and his tonemore anxious. I just kept looking through my book, as if in another world. Then when I could hear his frustration peaking I turned toward him andasked, "Do you think I am listening?" Of course, the answer was "no." Butnow I had his attention. So I told him I had a book that, given a chance, could help him become more popular. He liked this idea. We worked throughthe seven page chapter on "Conversational Skills," learning how to keep eyecontact, lean forward slightly, nod, make guttural sounds indicatingagreement, and ask appropriate questions. To my surprise, Alexander enjoyedthe lesson and asked me to leave the book in his room. For him, the simplefacts of none verbal behavior were a mystery revealed.

The most commonsocial errors made by ADHD children are, misreading body language, using"tone" inappropriately, violating other's physical boundaries, perseverating on topics, and failing to show interest in others. Gilerhelps parents and kids come to terms these social errors by teaching tenbasic social skills: 1) listening and responding, 2) smiling and askingquestions, 3) greeting others, 4) giving complements, 5) understanding bodylanguage and vocal tones, 6) understanding personal space and appropriatetouching, 7) joining an ongoing group, 8) sharing and cooperating, 9)ignoring teasing, and 10) managing anger. My son particularly liked thesection on the "Social Behaviors of Popular Children."

People cancompensate for lacking performance skills, like poor spelling, but "thereis no way to compensate for poor social skills," Giler explains. Withoutbasic social graces kids fail. In "Socially ADDept," the elementary rulesof interaction, like turn-taking and understanding personal space, areintroduced and explored in simple, kid-friendly manner. While not achildren's book, this will be an addition to your library your kids willappreciate. You'll appreciate Giler's straightforward, practical style, providing clear examples, new skills, and no guilt trips. ... Read more

Product Description

Providing a new perspective on ADHD in adults, this compelling book analyzes findings from two major studies directed by leading authority Russell A. Barkley. Groundbreaking information is presented on the significant impairments produced by the disorder across major functional domains and life activities, including educational outcomes, work, relationships, health behaviors, and mental health. Thoughtfully considering the treatment implications of these findings, the book also demonstrates that existing diagnostic criteria do not accurately reflect the way ADHD is experienced by adults, and points the way toward developing better criteria that center on executive function deficits. Accessible tables, figures, and sidebars encapsulate the study results and methods.

5-0 out of 5 stars Adult ADHD: What you need to know
Adult ADHD is a difficult and controversial subject in mental health. The diagnosis is compromised by a number of barriers not present in the well-documented childhood literature, such as more comborbid symptoms, fewer external observers such as parents and teachers, drug-seeking by clients, adaptations which hide some of the important features such as internal restlessness, different kinds of impairments, and different symptomatic criteria required for the diagnosis.

The only way to deal with these and many more problems is to do careful studies comparing patients to matched control groups, as well as follow patients over many years while comparing them with a good matched control group. These are incredibly demanding types of studies to accomplish, and to date no such combination of studies have been available.

However, Barkley and colleagues thoughtfully planned out the strategy for firmly establishing the characteristics of the adult with ADHD, as well as the long-term consequences awaiting those younger patients followed into adulthood. The result is a masterful account of two studies, one cross-sectional and one longitudinal. Put together, these two studies comprise an enormous body of data. The detailed analysis of these studies in separate papers would be daunting, but largely unavailable to a wider audience of non-specialists. This book is designed with the intelligent non-specialist reader in mind, but it does not lack the essential details to make a clear and cogent understanding of the realities of adult ADHD. This is a monumental contribution, and the most important source of information we have about this otherwise controversial subject. There is no better way to learn what we know about adults with ADHD. Other popular books lack the insight, skill, and credibility conveyed by this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly impressive work
This is the sort of incredibly impressive work that only these three authors would ever attempt. They collect and analyze an unbelievable amount of data to create the most detailed, thorough, and informative study of ADHD in adults ever published. Even if you don't read it straight through, it is an excellent reference and resource. Each chapter ends with a summary and clinical implications, so readers can quickly find the take home message, if they don't have time to read every word. The authors have taken the study of ADHD a giant step forward--and set the bar for all lifespan research.

5-0 out of 5 stars State of the art in ADHD science
Dr. Barkley's newest book offers the professional or the well educated lay reader an in depth review of the latest empirical findings on ADHD in adults. It is not a self help book although it may be helpful to a well informed ADHD patient or family member. Two major longitudinal research projects form the core of the book and each examines how this disorder looks as adolescents move into adulthood. Each chapter is followed by an executive summary of the major points. For the reader not steeped in the nuances of research projects this is necessary to avoid getting lost in the detailed findings. The final chapter also nicely summarizes the implications of the research for our best current theoretical model of the disorder and for its treatment.I am a clinical psychologist and Dr. Barkley's body of work in the area of ADHD is an example of what is best in clinical psychology. This work is another in a long series of notable achievements.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Tour de Force
The previous reviewer, Jon, said it all.Adult ADHD is real. You will learn all you need to know about it by reading this amazing book, culminating decades of rigorous study and clinical expertise.

Researchers such as authors Russell Barkley, Mariellen Fischer, and Kevin Murphy are the reliable anchors in a storm-tossed sea of ignorance, lassitude, indifference, and outright chicanery and propagandizing regarding adult ADHD.

Their studies are stunning for their elegant design, careful execution, and solid results. The text is well-written and profound, even to non-clinicians.When it comes to interpreting certain human behaviors, it will turn all your paradigms upside down and then inside out.

I cannot imagine any physician or therapist in this country--no matter what the specialty--not reading this book very carefully. Because untreated ADHD cuts across too many issues for any healthcare provider to remain unaware. These issues includehigher risk of traffic and on-the-job accidents, substance use, and poor health habits that can lead to the chronic diseases that so afflict this country, including obesity, diabetes, and hypertension.

ADHD is thought to affect from 10 to 30 million adults in the U.S. alone, depending on how broadly the criteria are applied. Yet only 10 percent of that lower figure is diagnosed--and even fewer in treatment.

Too often, ADHD is misdiagnosed as depression, anxiety, bi-polar disorder, borderline personality disorder, substance use disorder, attachment disorder, and the list of personality disorders goes on--most of which carry poor prognoses. Consequently, too many people suffer in frustration, piled on with moral judgmentsor plied with the wrong medications or therapeutic interventions that often make ADHD worse.

It's time to join the 21st Century regarding a brain condition that affects so many people, and this book, in my opinion, leads the way.

Product Description

In 2006 Philadelphia, graduate student Jonathan Love sued the organization that publishes the Law School Admissions Test. Love had attained average scores on the test, but claimed he should have been given extra time because he qualified as a person with a disability - and allowances provided by the Americans with Disabilities Act - due to Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. The case, which drew in author psychologist Michael Gordon as an expert witness for the defense, reached federal court and resulted in a precedent-setting ruling still as controversial as the disorder that triggered the trial. In this work, Gordon takes us into the courtroom and behind the scenes with attorneys and experts to look not only at this trial, but more than a dozen others that have involved ADHD or other psychiatric diagnoses, and the questions they raise, including what the real meaning of disability is, how malingering can be an issue with psychological disorders, and what the more far-reaching effects for the public can be if accommodations are provided to people who do not have a legally-defined disability. When does deference to an individual with a disorder like ADHD begin to invade the rights of the non-disabled?

Controversy fills these pages, from discussion of ADHD and the debate over its justifiability as a disability to public reactions regarding the ruling in Love's case and others. Comparisons and contrasts are also raised between the Love trial and earlier cases involving people claiming psychological disabilities who fought actions by The National Board of Medical Examiners, United Airlines, Toyota Motor Manufacturing, the Georgia State Board of Veterinary Medicine, and other organizations. Do the decisions help or harm disability rights and people with disabilities? Gordon offers the insights not only of a psychologist, but a seasoned legal insider who has testified as an expert witness at many of the trials.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Reading for Young Psychologists
Dr. Michael Gordon has created an object lesson in the perils of psychological assessment and wrapped it around an accessible and readable narrative. As someone who has made disability recommendations and determinations at the state, federal (SSI), VA, and DOD levels, and who has reviewed requests under the ADA in the a private sector, I feel that this book is essential reading for anyone involved in such work, but especially for behavioral health professionals and attorneys.

In a brisk read, this book offers an accurate and nonpartisan distillation of some of the complex motivations and nuances that can arise on multiple sides of a claim of disability under current law. It discusses these important topics in psychology with force and clarity:

--the tension that a helping professional feels between advocacy and impartiality

--the imperative that psychologists understand, and not overstep, their boundaries of competence

--the ways in which reliable and valid psychological instruments can be used to draw unreliable and invalid conclusions

--confirmation bias

--dissimulation

In my mind, this text should be required reading for any 4th year graduate school seminar on psychological assessment and especially during post-doctoral training in neuropsychological or forensic assessment.Any psychologist who wants to, or does, conduct evaluations should study the lessons illustrated in this text to avoid falling into the undisciplined, uninformed, and lax practices that all too often masquerade as psychological assessment.

Thank you, Dr. Gordon, for offering us a rare glimpse at practices usually shrouded behind thick veils of privacy and/or confidentiality. ... Read more

Information, inspiration, insights, discoveries, and tools for ADD/adhd in everyday life, Christian faith, local Church ministry, and community organizations. Authors share professional expertise, personal ADD experience/struggles, and stories of others whose ADD make spiritual life difficult. A message of hope--not a religious work. Spiritually-minded people--whatever stripe--find a safe & shame-free resource in these pages. The book is available as a paperback, audioBook, and eBook. It s agony for me in church was the complaint of an adult with attention deficit disorder (ADD/adhd) in one of many true stories found in the new book ADD/adhd, Christianity, & the Church (Spirit of Hope Publishing). Co-authors Jonathan Scott Halverstadt, M.S. LMFT and Pastor Jerry Seiden ask, Do ADDers force a fit and fake it even when it comes to their faith? According to the authors, the ADD children and adults they counsel face a host of hardships in their relationship to and participate at church or in their community of faith. They say that many Christian ADDers try to pass for normal as they fellowship and worship with other believers. Why? The core symptoms of ADD can challenge their ability to pay attention to the sermon, dismiss daydreams, battle boredom, restrain restlessness, stay seated, imped impatience impulses, and even get to church on time. The book by Halverstadt and Seiden goes beyond the classic symptoms of ADD. Co-author Jonathan Scott Halverstadt, LMFT introduces all six of the sub-types of ADD from the work of Daniel G. Amen, M.D., a pioneer in the use of nuclear medicine and SPECT* scans to study ADD. Halverstadt worked with Dr. Amen as a clinical associate in the Amen Clinic for Behavioral Medicine in Fairfield, California, and Dr. Amen provided one of two forewords for the book. Stories from the lives of real people help readers understand how the disorder affects people within the various subtypes. According to the authors, it is vital that people understand that attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (adhd) is only one of six subtypes. So, readers learn the subtleties and the unique suffering related to Classic ADHD, Inattentive ADD, Over-Focused ADD, Explosive ADD, Depressive ADD, and Ring of Fire ADD. Among the materials on each subtypes, readers learn which regions of the brain are affected and how they appear on SPECT scans. Important to any ADD discussion, yet separate from Dr. Amen s subtypes, is a chapter on ADD with Tics. Pastoral Counselor and coauthor Jerry Seiden, M.A., who has written eight books on ADD for himself and others, provides basic information about Tourettes Syndrome (TS). Seiden says, TS is part of the ADD package for about 30% of us ADDers, and I happen to one of them. The chapter s is a mix of good information from experts and personal reflections by Pastor Seiden, who shares how TS has brought him hardships and taught him humility. ... Read more

This is a lesson that just because you see something on Dr Phil, doesn't mean its good.
I was disappointed with the lack of practical strategies suggested. It was not revolutionary as the hype made it out to be.
I have read MANY books on the subject and would not recommend this to someone looking for help with their child. Save your money!

5-0 out of 5 stars Many ideas not often presented
I'm not sure (but not surprised)why this is getting such hostile responses. My son has been managed effectively through many of the techniques described here.I can't believe that these ideas are that controversial, but it's much easier to shove a pill down your kids throat and hope for the best. Is the negativity an attempt to quell your own guilt? A child will likely improve with stimulant medication because - guess what??- It's stimulating parts of the brain that regulate attention and impulse control.but what are the long-term effects of this?We do not have much longitudinal data (following people long term) to accurately guage the effects. Ever seen a long-term meth user? It's not pretty and Ritalin is in the amphetamine family.Granted, Ritalin users often take much smaller doses, but often takes it long term.I have known several kids that if I were their parent, I would medicate them, as their quality of life (school, home, and social) was significantly effected. However, for a mild/mod case, such as my son, I have found these strategies very effective. Most important to him:FOOD COLOR, sleep, & structure. For those that do not believe in the food color connection,we could do a little test:I could feed my son several packets of Go-gurts and send him to your house for the night. I would find you in the fetal position the next morning.Food color is PETROLEUM-BASED, people - why is this controversial???? Should this be in any of our bodies? Why has the diagnosis of ADHD exploded? The gene pool has not changed that much - points to environmental factors to me.Anyway, I highly recommend this book, as well as "The Gift of Adhd" by Lara Honos-Webb.Good luck and remember that children with this disorder would not choose these problems and need our help and willingness to help them find the keys to managing it.

5-0 out of 5 stars loved it
I have read alot of stuff on ADHD and it was great to finally read a book where you can tell the author really cares about kids and actually looks at each child's case individually. There is no doubt in my mind that nutrition has something to do with it for alot of these kids!

5-0 out of 5 stars From a Parent's Perspective
I have a 14 yo son with ADHD and I've read too many books on the subject. I took my son off all meds a year ago because the cure was becoming worse than the diagnosis and realized that the meds were masking his emotional problems even though he went to Psychciatrists and Psycologists, Pediatric Neurological Behavioralists-the list seemed eternal.

One thing I learned very quickly is that the Dr.s never really understood. They knew-they saw-they treated, but that is not living with it. Dr. Lawlis brings in his own experience with disabilities and gives a compassionate understanding to the fustration parents and children themselves feel, and offers insight and solutions.

As for the "Snake Oil" comment, again, it's easy for Dr.s to poopoo when you tell them that you think sugar adversly effects their behavior, or that you see a change after you give them dyed foods, but as a parent, you know your child and know the subtleties to their character that back up your opinions. Even if it isn't scientifically proven, is there anything to be hurt by trying to take additives out of their diet? Is there anything wrong with trying everything you can for the sake of helping your child? For the pharamceutical companies there is.

For a few dollars I think any added perspective on the situation is worthwhile. You really have nothing to loose in reading it, and everything to gain. The book costs no more than a copay of Adderall/Ritilin/Depakote/ad nauseum... ... Read more
