What is ADHD? What are the symptoms? What can parents do to help children overcome ADHD? How can this be accomplished without medication? What drugs are being used for ADHD are they effective? What are the side effects? What can educators do to help? What about childhood depression? Can anything be done to help children naturally?

These and many more questions are answered in this new 96 page book. Concise and practical, it assists both educators and parents to help children to succeed. There is much that parents can do to help children overcome ADHD symptoms, and medication rarely provides a solution. Through practical measures and lifestyle changes, parents can help children be successful. This book provides many additional resources that can help parents, as well as give ideas for teachers, special education teachers and principals.

Five years of research went into the production of this book, it is thorough and accurate. It represents the latest educational and scientific information on this subject. 5-0 out of 5 stars An invaluable book for parents
If you have a child who is diagnosed with ADHD, this book is a must read.

I found it gave a comprehensive view of ADHD (its possible causes, its treatment options) along with many thoughtful insights into ways it can bemanaged without medication. It is easy to read and the information is easy to understand and use.

You owe it to your child, yourself and your family to read this book for its great advice and to find out more about how to live successfully with ADHD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Invest in your child by reading this book
I'm going to be straight with you.As a medical provider for 30 years, I can promise you that many parents seeking help for their kids unfortunately will pass right by this wonderful book because of its title.Or, more likely, they won't seek any literature at all.People are busy.People are stressed.Often both parents work; they are tired, they want a quick fix for dinner, a quick fix for problems, a quick fix for their misbehaving child. But if you are reading this review--and the other reviews here--I congratulate you for taking the time and investing it in your child, sibling, or other family member, as the case may be.

More and more, these days, the quick fix isn't so quick.Doctors will want behavioral testing and testimonies from teachers...in other words documentation, before the docs prescribe the meds to suppress ADHD.And many of the medications require what used to be known as triplicate prescriptions--the type of Rx's that are watched very closely by the FDA due to the potential for abuse with these drugs. And the child's metabolism, chemistry labs, and development are monitored--or should be--when these types of meds are used.

I think that every parent or guardian considering treating the child with ADHD should buy this book and read it cover to cover...and then, with the help of a physician if it becomes necessary, decide upon the best course. This book is extremely well-done, not a stuffy text book, but an attractive, easy-to-read invaluable source of information that applies not only to the "hyperactive" youngster, but also to a family that is sorting through various concerns affecting mental, physical, and even spiritual health.

Any medication put into a child's body is considered a "dangerous drug," pretty much a term used by the FDA for any prescribed drug.It is a good term, because even the mis-use of a vitamin, particularly fat soluble, could cause harm.But...meds can be helpful: they can improve and prolong life.Sometimes they are necessary and right.Read "Overcoming ADHD Without Medication: A Parent and Educator's Guidebook" and then make educated decisions. At the very least, you will know what questions to ask.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have For Any Person or Parent of Child w/ADHD
As a physician, I see children and adults daily who have been diagnosed with ADD and ADHD. The first thing that often happens in this case is that they are put on medications without any regard for their lifestyle or nutritional habits. What I love about this book is that right from the beginning the author addresses that ADHD is a multi-factorial illness that has multi-factorial solutions.I especially like that he addresses how the over-exposure of a child to TV, movies, media, and video games affects the brain of a child in such a way that may contribute to the development of ADHD. In this book, the author skips over judgements and superfluous commentary, and gets right to the solutions. He gives the facts, backed up with data for both pharmacological and non-pharmacological management, as well as lifestyle management and leaving reader to decide which path to take in treatment.I especially love the section on the positive effects of music and art therapy. At the end of the book, the author leaves you with several resources so the learning can continue beyond the close of the book. There is no doubt that after reading this book, any parent of a child or person suffering from ADHD will be well informed on all of the avenues of treatment. It's an easy read, it's well laid out, and based on research.I would definitely recommend this to my patients and anyone else who has or knows someone with ADHD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource Book for Parents and Educators!
I am a parent of two girls, one of whom was very active as a young child. After reading, Overcoming ADHD Without Medication, I can confidently say that my daughter did not suffer from ADHD and did not go without needed treatment or intervention. She regularly gets all A's on her report card, she's learning to play the piano and keyboard, she participates in school athletics, she is a voracious reader, she's won 1st prize in art contests and sings in talent show in school!
I highly recommend this resource because the instructions and methodology for raising healthy, happy children is timeless. It simply boils down to the basics: providing a healthy diet, taking your kids outdoors to play, encouraging them to read, providing opportunities to listen to wholesome, relaxing music or learn to play an instrument, engaging in artistic pursuits, working with teachers and educators to ensure your child is receiving the best opportunities to learn and study, and so on.
If your child is exhibiting signs of ADHD or a teacher reports signs in your child, this book provides clear, workable alternatives to medicating your child with potentially harmful drugs. I highly recommend this book to any and all parents who wish to raise healthy, well-adjusted children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear and concise approach to ADHD
I studied and taught pre-school children, high school students and later in my career was a high school guidance counselor.I have taught and counseled ADHD students and parents. If you don't already know what it is and what to do to help a child that possibly has it, read this book and follow the advice. This is a good resource. There are easy to follow tips on consistent parenting. Results quoted from nutritional diet to suggested "diet" (limited use) of media and types of beneficial activity, all without the use of medication! If your child still has difficulty concentrating and settling down after following this faithfully, then seek a medical doctor.Find out what this education system provides as help and then find out what support your public school system provides for your child if diagnosed with ADHD.This book also includes a wonderful list of resources to read and research on the topic. You are the child's best advocate whether you are the teacher, counselor or parent. Take the time to know what you are dealing with.

Product Description

This far-reaching work from renowned scientist-practitioner Russell A. Barkley provides a radical shift of perspective on ADHD. The volume synthesizes neuropsychological research and theory on the executive functions, illuminating how normally functioning individuals are able to bring behavior under the control of time and orient their actions toward the future. Meticulously applying this model to an examination of the cognitive and social impairments manifested in ADHD, Barkley offers compelling new directions for thinking about and treating the disorder. The paperback edition features a new afterword in which the author reflects on current research directions and the continuing evolution of his approach.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best for academics & professionals
This book is necessary for anyone seriously studying ADHD or the issue of self-control, both because Barkley is central in the field and because he offer a testable theory of the disorder, rather than merely a description. His thought is rich, provocative and powerful, and he considers a wide swath of both neurological and psychological studies.

This is not the best book for parents, teachers or people with ADHD who simply want help understanding the condition. It is far too dense for that purpose, with many pages riddled with references to studies by author and date. Also, the only practical hints are confined to a short final chapter. Another problem is that this book is a bit discouraging for people with ADHD. Barkley is compassionate, but he is exhaustive in cataloging all the problems that might plague us. I have ADHD, and having finished this book, I feel amazed that I can remember to wipe my own [...].

For anyone needing help with the disorder, I'd suggestDriven to Distraction, which is cheery and full of useful suggestions.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Ever on This Topic
This contribution by Russell A. Barkley is a masterpiece in review and analysis of the confusing, confounding and frustrating topic of ADHD. Dr. Barkley's book is pitched at somewhat higher than the average layperson, maybe toward the BA in psychology or healthcare professional. However, the clear prose style will articulate to those with first hand daily experience in coping with ADHD in family members. The behavioral scenarios layed out by Dr. Barkley hit close to home for caregivers in this area. A must read for those serious about learning about ADHD.

1-0 out of 5 stars I am both appalled and scared at this piece of literature.
I know one can't really write a review for a book one has not yet read. But from what I have heard and read from other people who have seen this work--yes, I say "work" because that's exactly what this author is--I am saddened and appalled that this man is called an "expert" on ADHD.I have combined-type ADD myself, and even if I did not, I would certainly not read something that is so utterly defensive in nature and not at all directed toward the goal of helping us to understand ADHD, but making a mockery of those of us who have it, parents who have children with ADHD (and/or parents who have ADHD themselves), and TRUE experts who actually want to inform with no ulterior motives in mind.

How dare this man basically tell me I'm less than human. He should be "properly delt with" as well.

2-0 out of 5 stars Listen to his techniques, but question his theories
I am a clinical psychology doctoral student with ADHD who has sat and listened to Dr. Barkley's lectures, in person, on this subject at an ADHD seminar. From someone who knows this condition from the inside, this literature through my studies, and much theoretical literature outside of this field, here are my impressions:
1. Dr. Barkley's recommendations for treatment of ADHD are useful to both those of us who possess this difference and for parents as well. He has done much good work in this area.
2. Dr. Barkley is clearly threatened by newer perspectives on ADHD based in evolutionary psychology that may, in fact, help explain why this difference, which appears to have a strong genetic basis, continues to exist in such large numbers in the population. He is disparaging and rather arrogant in his treatment of others' ideas on the subject in person, making jokes at their expense which I was appalled that other psychologist appeared to find humorous.
3. In person, he also makes jokes at the expense of children with ADHD.He does not appear to have empathy for those with this difference; his empahty appears limited to those who must "deal" with this difference in others, be it parents, teachers, employers, etc.Again, I was appalled at his crass attempts at humor targeted at individuals with ADHD during the seminar I attended. It was akin to making "fat jokes" at a medical seminar on obesity, although Dr. Barkley seemed oblivious to the lack of propriety of such jokes, and furthermore, did not appear to believe that anyone in the educated audience he was addressing could suffer from ADHD.
4. He is so married to his own theoretical views, which have made him a "renowned expert" in the area of ADHD that many of his attacks on other theoretical viewpoints are clearly defensive in nature and aimed to protect his career and status in the field. His disdain for Thomas Hartman was quite apparent at the seminar, for example, although there is now some evidence that Hartmann's idea (it's not quite a theory yet) that individuals with ADHD were adaptive in past cultural environments is quite possible and supported by evidence concerning other conditions that were once protective in different physical environments (i.e., sickle cell anemia and its protection against malaria).

All in all, my recommendation is to listen to his treatment planning, but take his theories with several grains of salt.

5-0 out of 5 stars hope
This book offers hope in a way that many attitudes don't offer.
The criticisms of the book surprise me. Everyone talks about strategies. The author is doing that also and doing it in a hopeful way. I hate the term, attention deficit. Most people are too quick to feel that a student can't develop self-control. If a person thinks they can't control themselves, they can't. One of the psychiatrists in the mental health center where I work said that the largest handicap is often a patient's perception of the diagnosis.

There are several children's books that help children develop strategies for self-control and a hopeful attitude. One is a new book titled, Whoa Wiggle-worm. One of the characters is named Lickety-split. Cool and uncool nicknames is one of the things they deal with in the book. Self-control is shown on a level that children can relate to. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything you ever wanted to know +
This book is a an eye opener and a great resource for my family. We have a huge collection of learning disabilities and issues in our (very large) family. I was shocked to first, have Dr. Broer list the history of patients who present with these symptoms and be able to see the children in our family and how they fit with those lists. I trust the fact that he is able to point this out means that he has actually shown enough interest in this area to research it and track backgrounds, etc.
I have long thought that blood sugar, etc. was a key factor in many children's behavior, but Dr. Broer expanded my thinking to even more than just that issue. He actually points a finger at asthma/allergies, ear infections, and other medical conditions (and in some cases the treatment for them) as a factor in creating circumstances to unleash learning disablities.
I read the book in two days because it had so much info on the affects of nutrition, and an amazing amount of info on the factor that immunizations have on those with certain risk factors.
I was most amazed at the info on the school system, and the problems with the changes in the way we teach children to read, and how this has contributed to more behavioral issues over the years. And, I can see this trend through out my own family.
This book was so thorough and had so much packed into it that I can't imagine anyone who already has or is planning to have children not finding something useful including the info on how to discipline with love.
I am introducing the book to the rest of my sisters and brothers, and I am using the nutritional info.Right away we have seen a difference in our 17 month old granddaughter with just some simple changes in her diet.I wish I had this info 20 years ago.

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder primarily affects boys and male teens, and the symptoms can continue on into adulthood.  Consequently, clinicians need to be well-versed in techniques to treat this disorder that are tailored specifically to the needs of males; there are, however, few resources available to them.  This guidebook provides a review of the counseling, educational, and medical interventions that can benefit boys and men with ADHD.  Kapalka begins with a review of symptoms, etiology, assessment, and diagnosis and then discusses a variety of specific interventions: individual counseling, parenting techniques, classroom interventions, and group counseling techniques.  The use of medication in conjunction with counseling is also considered.  Throughout all of the topics covered, Kapalka emphasizes what it is like to be male and have ADHD and describes the impacts that masculinity and gender expectations can have on the expression of and response to the disorder.

This book gave an account of life living with a child who has been diagnosed with ADHD.It did tend to put things in perspective making me feel that I was not alone! Describing my child exactly.I would describe it as quite light hearted and witty and read it in less than an hour.It did not really give parenting advice or ideas on how to improve your child'ssituation. There are a lot of alternative remedies and approaches that are not mentioned.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book!
It's so nice to find a readable, helpful, humorous book that puts ADD in perspective. No jargon, no behavioral modification plans, but just plain good sense. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a cogent, comprehensive and insightful analysis
First to review, but I'm not a shill -- merely an involved parent.

This is an exceptionally valuable reference for professionals, academics and invested laypersons. This is not a casual read. The book is wonderfully concise -- no fluff here.

For professionals and academics, it contains a wealth of references -- of the ~300+ pages, ~250 are text, 10 are index, and a full 55 pages are references to other texts and journal articles. The book is worth purchasing for the references alone.

Professor Gregg documents ADHD & LD research, offers her own cogent analysis & insights, and provides practical recommendations for navigating the relevant legislative and therapeutic frameworks.

The only noteworthy omission is that the book, probably by design, contains virtually no discussion of medication. One must look for that discussion elsewhere.

The net result is that this book has helped & continues to help me to intelligently, knowledgeably and helpfully engage the professionals I work with to assist my son in leveraging his strengths and manage his deficits.

Very highly recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical, Common Sense Help
Dr. Gant's book is worth reading if you are intersted in the truth about ADD/ADHD.He describes the biochemistry in a manner that lay persons can understand so that they are not left in mystery about this disorder. He then gives answers and solutions, which is refreashing.

This knowledge will help parents to better understand and question the advice of others. This book would be a best seller if it weren't so profitable to treat the symptoms of this disorder and view it as a "chronic", long term expense.Dr. Gant is to be commended for his love of children, his visionary approach to healing and his courage to think "outside the box" and find solutions and cures.

This bookshould be mandatory reading for all persons who are directly or indirectly involved with this disorder.Readers will find that the truth makes much more sense and is refreshing and empowering!

4-0 out of 5 stars A must read for parents considering Ritalin et al.
If you are willing to take the time to read this book from cover to cover, you will learn how many factors contribute to the symptoms of ADHD,depression, anxiety etc. for all people not just children. The details ofthe biochemistry and neurotransmitter activity as well as treatmentprotocols answered many questions for me that other MD's and PhD's couldnot answer. Most importantly - yes, there are blood tests that indicatewhere the problem(s) lie, and yes, there are natural treatments to give thebody what it needs to repair itself. Our child read parts of the book withme and became very motivated to follow the protocol once he understood whatwas going on inside of him. He especially enjoyed following the diagrams ofthe chemical pathways and learning how a missing "ingredient"i.e. amino acid or fatty acid, causes the production to slow down whichcauses the body to show certain symptoms. We brought our child to beevaluated by Dr. Gant and were impressed with his intelligence, warmth andexperience.Children suspected or diagnosed with ADHD and other relateddisorders deserve to have their care-givers read this book. ...
