Product Description
Atherosclerosis is a degenerative condition in which arteries build up deposits called plaques (atheromas) which consist of lipids (mainly cholesterol), connective tissue and smooth muscle cells originating from the arterial wall. Plaques develop quietly over a period of years and are unnoticeable until there is an interruption in the normal flow of blood. Plaques may partially or totally block the blood's flow through an artery. Two things that can happen where plaques occur are: bleeding (haemorrhage) into the plaque; and formation of a blood clot (thrombus) on the plaque's surface. Atherosclerosis affects large and medium-sized arteries. The type of artery and where the plaque develops varies with each person. Atherosclerosis research has witnessed startling progress in recent years, partially due to new drugs as well as to new breakthroughs in molecular medicine. ... Read more

Product Description
In the last ten years, major strides have been made in defining the presence and role of inflammation in atherosclerosis as well as in injury to the tissues that occurs after episodes of ischemia and reperfusion.

In sixteen chapters, written by world-renowned individuals from different countries, the role of inflammation and different mediators in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis is presented. The significance of inflammation and possible therapeutic implications is also described in depth. This book is of great interest for a wide range of physicians, researchers, and scientists who may want to study more and develop the concept of inflammation and atherosclerosis. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
Dietary Proteins and Atherosclerosis provides a thorough review of the role of proteins in the development of atherosclerosis. The author reviews early research connections between dietary fat and cardiovascular disease caused by the build-up of plaque in arteries and examines other factors that contribute to atherosclerosis, such as infection and dietary proteins. Relying on data obtained from almost 2,000 research articles and literature reviews, the author provides a thorough analytical examination and discusses how emphasis on the role of dietary fat in atherogenesis has overshadowed the critical contribution of dietary proteins to the development of cardiovascular disease. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
This volume highlights recent progress in devising strategies for the management of hypercholesterolemia. The studies presented show that the risk of atherosclerosis in individuals with high blood cholesterol levels can be substantially reduced by a diet low in cholesterol and saturated fat, by elimination of high blood pressure and other factors that contribute to atherosclerosis, and by treatment with drugs that are highly effective in lowering plasma cholesterol. After reviewing the evidence that lipoprotein metabolism plays a central role in atherogenesis, the contributors analyze clinical trials of interventions aimed at lowering cholesterol and formulate new guidelines for lowering blood cholesterol and reducing the risk of coronary heart disease. Full consideration is also given to the significance of hypercholesterolemia as a public health problem. The latter portion of the book examines the mechanisms of action of drugs used to control plasma cholesterol and presents extensive studies comparing the efficacy of HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, cholestyramine, and probucol. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
This volume assesses the significance of hypertriglyceridemia as a cardiovascular risk factor in non-insulin-dependent diabetic patients and explores new strategies for reducing the risk of atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease in these patients. The contributors present epidemiological and familial evidence linking plasma triglycerides with coronary heart disease, analyze the plasma lipoprotein changes resulting from hypertriglyceridemia, and establish a connection between triglyceride-rich lipoproteins and atherogenesis. Extensive pharmacological and clinical studies presented suggest that nicotinic acid and acipimox can reduce atherogenic risk factors in diabetic patients by regulating lipoprotein metabolism. Close attention is also given to the role of diet and exercise in treatment of hypertriglyceridemia. ... Read more
