Product Description
Compelling and easy to understand, this book explains the medical and social issues surrounding fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) and fetal alcohol effects (FAE). Compassionately written by the expert psychologist who conducted some of the earliest examinations of chidren with FAS and FAE more than 20 years ago, this guidebook explains how to identify and work with children and adults who have the disorder and how to educate prospective mothers and society at large. Photographs, illustrations, and case studies reveal the physical and behavioral manifestations of FAS and FAE, particularly in children. For parents, educators, pediatricians, psychologists, adoption workers, social workers, nurses, and child care providers, this timely book speaks to everyone seeking an understanding of the challenges faced by children who have these entirely preventable disabilities. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars FAS
This is a good book if you don't know much about FAS. It would have been more helpful for me to read 3 years ago when I first adopted my 3 daughters from Ukraine. At the time the first Dr. didn't think that they had FAS, but after about 9 months, I read the symptoms and felt like they did. Anyway, hopefully pregnant women would read it and understand the effects of alcohol on pregnancy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great referance's and information
This book is chalked full of the information about FASD! From the beginning of awareness in the public till now! Reccomended reading for all who deal with FASD.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Truly Grateful Parent
Dr. Streissguth's Book is the best explanation of the effects of alcohol on the unborn child, that I have ever found. For years, I did not know what was wrong with the beautiful little girl that my husband and I adopted.Twenty-seven doctors, psychologists, psychiatrists, school counsellors, guidance counsellors, religious leaders, police or addictions counsellors over the past 16 years never once, suggested that FAS/E was the problem. For every person in those positions dealing with troubled children, "Fetal Alchohol Syndrome: A Guide for Families and Coommunities" should be compulsory reading!
I cried over and over while I read the book when I saw how my community, my family and I had let my daughter down, because we didn't know.I wrote to Dr. Streissguth and thanked her personally, and I am doing my best to help my daughter and to educate others, so no one has to fail their child the way we did.Thank you again, Dr. Streissguth!

5-0 out of 5 stars The first book to read on FAS
Written by one of the leading behavioral experts in the field.A must for anyone with a problem child, in medicine or psychology, social or justice work...it is a recognized primer for the topic of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent FAS resource
Dr. Streissguth is one of the pioneers in the identification and treatment of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and the entire spectrum of congenital damage arising from in-utero exposure to alcohol.25 years after the identification of this common and devastating disability, most efforts in the academic community still focus on definition and diagnosis, with relatively little attention paid to treatment.Dr. Streissguth stands atop the heap in extending her basic science research into the actual lives of affected individuals, their families, and the communities in which they live.I consider her the foremost authority in the academic community on exploring pragmatic options for helping affected individuals, families, and community.

This little volume is jam packed with useful information. ... Read more

Liz is a great author, and she has taught me how to love my son all over again. Befor Liz and Jodee books came along, I really hated the boy he had became. Now I can better relate to him, and our relationship has improved greatly. We still have our ups and downs, However I am now better equip and a much happier mother and wife. You both are Gods work of art. Thank you for giving me hope once again. Cheryl

4-0 out of 5 stars The best I can be
This is a wonderful book for both the mom's to read about their FAS kids and the kids to read to feel like someone else walks in their shoes. I have 3 adopted girls from Ukraine, and they all have FAS, PTSD, Learning disabilities, and depression. It made me sad for all these helpless children, to have been damaged before they were born. God does love them and this book helps us understand their thinking, their behavior issues and how to love them as they are.

5-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down!
This was the book with answers to questions we had! I have been reading it to my daughter with ARND/FASD. She knows now she can make it because Liz has! You would of thought she wrote the book about her! This book is highly reccomended by our family!

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Reading on FASD
When I leant this to our first grader's teacher I expected a little hesitance, a little procrastination. But instead I was greeted with a request to keep the book longer so she could make more notes. I've now purchased two more copies of the book to share with family and others and would highly recommend this as a resource for anyone coping with the devastating diagnosis of FASD. Extremely highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on this subject!
As the adoptive mother of a child with FASD I have read many books on this subject looking for guidance. This is the best book I have found.First it describes the behaviors my daughter has and then gives us clearly explained ways to help us learn to manage them as well as train our daughter how to manage them. There is help for every stage of their childhood as well as help for the classroom teacher. It doesn't sugar coat the issues and say it will be easy but gives you practical ways to manage these difficult issues.I was relieved to learn my stress and exhaustion are typical for mom's who deal with this and that there is hope. This book has been an answer to my prayers!

Product Description
Jennifer dropped to her knees, trying to make sense of the doctor's diagnosis: 'Your daughter has fetal alcohol syndrome.' Her adopted daughter, Ashley, the blond, blue-eyed angel she longed and prayed for since she was a teenager, would forever be affected by her birthmother's decision to drink during pregnancy. Ashley would suffer all her life from mental and physical birth defects that were completely preventable, and she would have less than a 10 percent chance of ever being able to live on her own. In Forfeiting All Sanity: A Mother's Story of Raising a Child with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, Jennifer Poss Taylor shares her family's experience with FAS and the perseverance, sense of humor, and love that daily overcome its effects. Taylor's honesty and personal insight will capture readers as she describes the daily challenges of raising a child with special needs. Every parent will be touched by this story. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars realistic
This child has an extreme case of FAS.However, it is realistically written. I have a child with FAS.

5-0 out of 5 stars FINALLY, Real help for parents and others of FAS Children!!
Jennifer offers hope to parents who are in the midst of the nightmare of raising
a child born with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. The book is short, with her openly sharing the experiences of horror parents have with the unexplained sudden explosions of fits of screaming, yelling and hitting that can last for hours.

Jennifer does use several biblical references, and hopefully will give parents hope that they can make it through raising their child when there are no clear answers. She helps parents understand that you cannot make a "normal" child out of a child suffering with FAS: rather, you must change your way of thinking and dealing with the behaviors.

As a parent of an adult FAS child, I believe this book should be in the hands of every family member and teacher, Pastor, etc dealing with this illness.Well worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Realistic day to day account of living with child with FASD
As an adoptive mother of 3 children with FASD I have read MANY books on FASD. So many books have a tendency to go on and have alot of medical jargon that are hard with those that dont deal with this on a daily basis to really understand. This book is VERY good in that it is an easy read that gives a realistic account of the daily implications of FASD on a child and a family. Finally, a book that I can share with my family, friends and support system that they will read and I hope better understand what life is really like. I am very thankful for this book and I hope that it will open the eyes of many.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thankful for sharing her story
I am so thankful Jennifer had the honesty to share what life is like with a child with FAS.The book was incredibly emotional portraying her journey and struggles with Ashley. It was easy to read and I could not put it down - I finished the book in an afternoon! It certainly taught me some valuable information and challenged me to abstain if/when I become pregnant, even though my doctor says it is fine.It truly is not worth the risk and I pray this book touches others lives, as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Easy Read
What a great book! The author does an amazing job of educating the reader about FAS, as well as, feel the emotions of raising a child with FAS.A heartfelt story that will have you laughing, crying, and feeling frustrated with mommies who do not understand drinking even a little while pregnant, can cause a lifetime of struggle for the child and caregiver. You will feel like you are part of the Taylor family; like Jennifer is your best friend. The book is an easy read that can be read cover to cover in one day. You will NOT want to put this story of sweet Ashley down.I highly recommend this book for you and anyone who is a mother or planning to become one. ... Read more

This book is an extension of the material found in *Fetal Alcohol Syndrome:A Guide for Families and Communities* by Ann Streissguth.
Some of the topics:Secondary disabilites that can occur when diagnosis is later in life.ADULT FAS which is an entirely different set of problems and probably the part to which the public and the community are most resistant....this would include diagnosis, independent living and residential treatment situations. Medications for children with FAS.Classroom setups/situations that would aid a child with FAS.Judicial concerns for the person with FAS who has encountered problems with the law.Sexual deviancy. Treatment programs for mothers with addiction issues.

4-0 out of 5 stars Especially moving when you know the eventual outcome
I read this book many, many years ago - and have read it again. It was made into a TV movie some years back.

Especially moving when you find out what happened to the child - and eventually to the father, Michael Dorris.

Bought as a reference book for a non-profit organization who counsels mothers with children having fetal alcohol syndrome. Satisfied with order/delivery, a bit pricey.

5-0 out of 5 stars FAS/FAE
This book was recommended when I was in graduate school and taking special education courses. It is very informative although wordy at times but necessary. If you ever wondered why some children just don't "seem to learn" you have to read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars FASD

5-0 out of 5 stars The Broken Cord, A MUST READ
I first read this book about 15 years ago. The whole story touched me deeply and I never forgot it. It was tucked in the back of my mind all these years. This book is about a 26 year old Native American, single college professor who desires to be a family man and decides to adopt a son. He is a nuturing sort, into his roots and waiting for the "right woman" to come along. (And she eventually does come into the picture) Meanwhile, he is a good father, doing everything he can to help his son have a better start in life and he tries with all his heart and mind to aid his son with health issues and soon to be apparent behavioral issues. He really is naive and doesn't know what he is getting into. But he perseveres and devotes his life to try to figure out his sons problems and discovers he is struggling with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. There are many compelling things to this story. The fact that it is a true story, where you follow his very personaljourney from adopting at age 3, to his sons 20th birthday. (This is at the beginning stages of our understanding of FAS/FASE in the U.S.)Later, you see the introduction of alcohol to the American Indians, from the beginning and how it affects Reservation Life today. From there he branches into how alcohol abuse and FAS/FASE is a world wide phenomena affecting every level of society from the poor to the rich. There is a lot of science exposing the danger of alcohol consumption on the developing fetus. This book was utterly facinating. It is complete with loads of documentation and recorded conversations that shed light on the problems that are helpful for today.
(Even though my copy was published in 1979, I think) It is written in a totally readable style.
This book has become dearer to me, as we have adopted a boy at age 4 and who is now 10. I remembered this book and reread it recently, and was blown away! It helped me realize that we too, are on a very similar journey with our youngest son. I found many comman behaviors and have become convinced as I research, that we too are living with
Fetal Alcohol Effects. Our son case is not as severe as Adam's but there are many, many similarities. I would highly recommend this book for every person to read.
If you or someone you love is dealing with these problems, you will find this book encouraging, even though sad at times. It is helpful for broadening your horizons about the needs of people in general, maybe that person you see shabbily dressed, asking for money in front of the store. It is a book that will hopefully not only educate but challenge us all to deeper levels of compassion, especially towards those less fortunate. PLEASE READ! It is a real eye-opener. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally - A GREAT and Understandable Resource Book!
Over 2 years ago we found out our adopted son (was our nephew) has Fetal Alcohol Effects. He is the child of a cocaine couple.Though Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is the closest medical diagnosis, it does not quite describe him.

This book with the contrast it draws between Poly Drug Effected Children and Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is exactly what we are living.

Anyone who has this horrible outcome in their day - to - day lives that needs a deeper understanding of their situation absolutely needs this book. We have shared it with a few professionals who have agreed it is a terrific resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars Short, straight-forward, with excellent information for ALL
This was a great book (more like a brochure) for me, as I am a professional and don't have a great deal of time. I was able to sit down and read it in one evening which was ideal.I am passing along the information to everyone I can think of who works with children, especially FAE/FAS.I think this brochure reminds all of us (adults) that the most important thing when working with FAE/FAS children is REMAINING FLEXIBLE.It is easy to get stuck in routines and often, the frustrations are simply due to OUR inflexibility and refusal to think outside the box.I applaud the author and plan to share her story and information with all people (profesionals, parents, educators, and clients) that I can!

5-0 out of 5 stars FASD
This was full of helpful ideas. It is not what I would call a book, but a pamplet maybe. Need to buy more than one, so can give to teachers and others. I purchased one for our local Library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best bang for the buck.
This short and very practical pamphlet is the best quick read on dealing with kids who have been affected by fetal alcohol. Malbin writes clearly, with poetry but no syrup, and she reframes the very difficult behavior that often manifests in kids with FAS/E so that those who love them and/or care for them can develop attitudes that really help the kids, can cope with the disability, and can see beyond it. The author went through the fires of hell to be able to write this book, and every word is a treasure.

Product Description

Fantastic Antone Grows Up is a field guide to life with an adolescent or young adult with fetal alcohol syndrome/effects.  Under the best of circumstances, adolescence is a trying time for young people and their families.  The budding adult seeks independence and autonomy while the resistant child within longs for protection and structure; questions about sexuality and work, social commitments, and solitary accomplishments loom large and can create a family battlefield.  For the challenged and challenging young people with FAS/E, the circumstances as they begin maturing are never the best. In this sequel to Fantastic Antone Succeeds, young people with FAS/E and their caregivers report on their experiences coping with the problems of adolescence and young adulthood.  Again the editors and authors have concentrated on the wisdom of practice, as they candidly convey which techniques worked and which did not during the difficult passages of the teenage years and beyond. The twenty-one chapters are grouped according to theme.  Section one discusses the meaning of success for adolescents and adults with FAS/E -- the need to define success in new ways.  Cindy Gere found her path to success, for example, through creative expression.  She graduated from college with a degree in fine arts and successfully completed a program in art.  Many of her paintings, including the one illustrating the cover of this book, provide a poignant and candid expression of what FAS/E means to her.   Section two discusses strategies that work in areas such as counseling, education, sexuality, trouble with the law, and independent living.  Section three covers what families need from the community, including innovative programs that help individuals with FAS/E, and how to get a diagnosis at adolescence.  The book also contains important resources, organizations to contact, and internet addresses. More has been learned about how alcohol poisoning in the womb alters brain function and physical development since the release of Fantastic Antone Succeeds, but science is far from providing the answers that affected young people and their caregivers need.  Until such answers are forthcoming, nothing can replace the voices of experience with their practical messages of coping, caring, loving, weeping, laughing, and -- more often than might be expected -- succeeding.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Antone Grows Up
I have really enjoyed this book!As a parent of an alcohol affected child, it has been fabulous to read the stories in this book about others who are also affected, and most importantly, to read of the success they are experiencing as they grow up in a world that does not always understand their need.I have gained a lot of empowerment from this book, and I believe that together my son and I can acheive the best for him now, unlike when we first found out about his diagnoses and were told of the very bleak future that lay ahead of us.Thank you also to Amazon for their swift and efficient service!

5-0 out of 5 stars For young adults and their families
[..]
Here is what I needed: a compendium of articles by young adults living with FAS/E and their parents, therapists, doctors, and caregivers. The book has three stated intentions: to provide examples of people living "successful" lives with FAS/E (and explanations of what that success means); to describe "strategies that work"; and to look at FAS/E from a community or holistic point of view. As a result, it errs a bit in the direction of optimism. It does not set out to cover the horror stories and nightmares, though enough sneak in by way of truth-telling that there is no gilding the lily. This form of brain damage is very, very difficult for everyone it touches, and many people with the disorder do end up in prison, on the streets, or dead before they're 25. But some young adults DO become relatively independent (if they have public services such as sheltered workshops, therapists, group homes, and income supplementation); some get married, and if they marry mature and capable people who are able to carry more than half the weight, some succeed in parenting, and/or finding jobs that satisfy them and use their special skills. That's quite a string of IFs, and yet the book opens a window on at least a distant possibility of life beyond the time when mom takes on the labor of supporting two households. I needed the view through that window. This is a really wonderful book. There's a little sappiness in it, because when you get parents talking about kids with disabilities, a certain amount of sentiment is naturally going to flow over the top; but for the most part, it's good science, good sense, and good human feeling.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a help!
As legal guardian for for the past 7 years to a 15 year old FASD girl, this book is a valuable resource and enormously encouraging.I'm only on the 2nd chapter and already I can see a difference in attitude and action on my part and hers.A must-have for any parent, teacher or adult working with teens who are living with FASD.Gives insight from both the adult and child.Wish I'd read it 2 years ago to help prepare for these teen years.Life would have been a bit more peaceful.

Product Description

A generation has passed since a physician first noticed that women who drank heavily while pregnant gave birth to underweight infants with disturbing tell-tale characteristics. Women whose own mothers enjoyed martinis while pregnant now lost sleep over a bowl of rum raisin ice cream. In Message in a Bottle, Janet Golden charts the course of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) through the courts, media, medical establishment, and public imagination.

Long considered harmless during pregnancy (doctors even administered it intravenously during labor), alcohol, when consumed by pregnant women, increasingly appeared to be a potent teratogen and a pressing public health concern. Some clinicians recommended that women simply moderate alcohol consumption; others, however, claimed that there was no demonstrably safe level for a developing fetus, and called for complete abstinence. Even as the diagnosis gained acceptance and labels appeared on alcoholic beverages warning pregnant women of the danger, FAS began to be de-medicalized in some settings. More and more, FAS emerged in court cases as a viable defense for people charged with serious, even capital, crimes and their claims were rejected.

Golden argues that the reaction to FAS was shaped by the struggle over women's relatively new abortion rights and the escalating media frenzy over "crack" babies. It was increasingly used as evidence of the moral decay found within marginalized communities--from inner-city neighborhoods to Indian reservations. With each reframing, FAS became a currency traded by politicians and political commentators, lawyers, public health professionals, and advocates for underrepresented minorities, each pursuing separate aims.

Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Fetal Alcohol Syndrome," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Fetal Alcohol Syndrome in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

Product Description
Recognition of the relationship between alcohol abuse and adverse prenatal outcomes is reflected in the warning labels on every alcoholic beverage sold in the United States. Because alcohol abuse has serious consequences for both individuals and society as a whole, much research has been devoted to this problem. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome provides straightforward facts regarding the impact of alcohol consumption as it affects the development of the embryo and fetus. Surveying current research of fetal alcohol syndrome and its related problems, the book addresses the immediate effects on development at various stages. Long-term action of prenatal alcohol exposure later in life is also considered. A chapter devoted to assessing the behavior of children who were prenatally exposed to alcohol emphasizes the necessity of longitudinal studies of fetal alcohol syndrome. This important reference offers a thorough overview of a problem that cannot be ignored. ... Read more
