5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful information for hypoglycemics
This is the 3rd book on hypoglycemia that I've read and by far the easiest to understand and most informative. It was exactly what I needed to understand my condition and gave many recommendations on the best diet and lifestyle for someone living with this disease. I HIGHLY recommend it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Helpful
The primary value of this book is that it explains how hypoglycemia is often a precursor to diabetes, and how insulin's effectiveness decreases if one does not address and halt the progression. This was important to me because I was confused by the fact that while the immediate "cure" for low-blood sugar symptoms is sugar, paradoxically the problems are caused by too much sugar.

The second major value of this book is simplifying what one should and should not eat - stay away from white flour products and other simple carbohydrates, as well as processed cheese, meat, and heavy fats. On the other hand, readers need be careful - eg. the book recommends fruits and vegetables, including grapes (they have natural sugar that takes longer to process in the digestive system). However, it seems that ultimately sugar is sugar, even if in a more slowly digested form, and should be avoided as much as possible.

5-0 out of 5 stars About time
I have been strugeling with this and fibromyalgia, and had to retire 11 years ago because of it. and went undiagnosed by Dr's.
I was diagnosed 1.5 years ago, and this book explained in detail what the Dr. was telling me so I could really help myself.Wish I could have found it earlier. These two syndrom's go together and share symptoms so I really HAD to understand them."What your Dr. May not tell you about Fibromayalgia" was the other fabulous book that helped me.I made an appointment Dr. St. Amand (the author) and flew down and was diagnosed after reading it.
I searched for answers because I was at the point of needing strong Rx. and I don't like those. You need to "really" do what the Dr. recommends or it will not work to reverse symptoms.I highly recommend this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars But what to Do and what Not to Do?
I'm afraid I bought this book because of its excellent cover.Yes, I judged the book by its cover. Its title, "The Do's and Don'ts of Hypoglycemia, an Everyday Guide to Low Blood Sugar", along with 6 colorful photos of food would suggest that this book will detail what you should eat and not eat to overcome low blood sugar.

Note to readers:This is NOT a book which will thoroughly inform you of what you should eat and not eat to overcome low blood sugar.Instead, it is more like a memoir of Roberta Ruggiero--who you will be sure to know by the end of the book--is founder of the Hypoglycemia Support Foundation.Honestly, I don't really care about any support foundation, nor do I need a book that just tells me where to find MORE information about hypoglycemia (thanks, I'll use Google).

I just finished reading "The Low Blood Sugar Handbook" by Edward and Patricia Krimmel. This book is 10 times more informative than the "Do's and Don'ts of Hypoglycemia".I look forward to more reading on the subject, but glad for now to have found something more substantial.

2-0 out of 5 stars Weak on facts, strong on empathy
This books is good for someone who's unfamiliar with hypoglycemia, but is weak on specific facts on nutrition and biology. The Carbohydrate Addict books by Drs. Rachel Heller and Richard Heller provide much more factual information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ms. Ruggerio is a God-send
After recently being diagnosed with Hypoglycemia I found this book very helpful and informative.Ms. Ruggerio touched on many of the emotional aspects that one experiences with Hypoglycemia as well as putting all the medical lingo into laymen's terms.Thank you for such a wonderful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved this book and the author!
Roberta Ruggerio's book saved my life. After going from doctor to doctor and not being properly diagnosed I came upon this book.If it wasn't for the information I received from this book and her informative website I would still be thinking I was losing my mind. Many doctors do not believe that Hypoglycemia is a real medical issue.Thank goodness for this wonderful dedicated woman and her book. Please pay the negative reviews no mind.I'm not sure which book these two ladies read but it couldn't possibly be Roberta's.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
Good cook book. The writer is vegetarian, so if you are looking for ways to incorporate meat into your diet, you won't find them in this book.Good ideas and recipes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book to Improve Everyone's Diet
I'm not hypoglycemic at least I hope I am not, but I had been exhibiting the symptoms such as anxiety, shakiness, difficulty speaking, irritability, and confusion after waking up. I thought I might change my diet, so I got this book. I'd have to say that this book offers great recipes and I've been feeling better since I've changed my diet. The daily menu is very helpful and the recipes are so simple that I can easily put the meals together which is convenient for me because of my hectic schedule. The nutritional information is also helpful; I don't have to waste time purchasing a nutrition book or trying to find the information on the internet.

5-0 out of 5 stars From Morning to Evening, I know it all!!!!
Very nice! worth a try. When i first bought other book on the same topic i found that informative but lacking detail information on Hypoglycemia. This book not only explain recipes but also guide you from breakfast to dinner even include your daily drinks and of course not blindly eating and drinking, you know it all that what are you taking in shape of food, every recipes has nutritional facts given. By the way you don't need to be reactive hypoglycemic to buy it, If you are away from mom like me and want to have some tasty and healthy food, give this book a try. Stephanie Kenrose don't mind my dear but you must be a cook:) Recommend to all of course a exceptional hard work behind this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tasty, healthy recipes!
I feel like this book was exceptionally informative with just enough humor and personality to keep it interesting. (I personally liked the reference to Dan White and the Twinkie defense in the introduction.)I've been vegetarian for 5 years, and a vegan off and on, and I found this to have so many useful and easy recipes for a hypoglycemia-conscious diet. The book breaks each recipe down and informs the reader of its nutritional facts so you know exactly what you're eating. I like how it even includes dessert recipes, which satisfy my huge sweet tooth! The 12 tips in the beginning were pretty useful, too, and helpfully ease the reader into the idea of the diet. Highly recommended to anyone new to vegetarianism or being hypoglycemic.

4-0 out of 5 stars i'm not all that into cooking buuut...
Everyone with health problems would appreciate a completed script as to what they should and should not do in order to stay healthy. People who suffer from reactive hypoglycemia are no different. This cookbook isn't among the norm that simply offers a list of recipes that you can follow blindly that offer very little insurance as to effectiveness. The cookbook gives a month by month diet plan as well as tips that you can follow in order to gain an advantage over your hypoglycemia. It's a generally accepted fact that the hardest part of following any diet is the need to give up certain foods. This particular volume follows the belief that there is no reason why you shouldn't have the foods you enjoy just as long as you eat them in a healthy way. So of course there is a section dedicated to the danger foods and their acceptable substitutes. Not only that, but nutritional charts are attached at the end of each detailed recipe. With everything from French toast with flax seed and blackberries to hamburgers and burritos, this cookbook allows no room for excuses as to why you're not willing to eat better. The recipes are fun and easy to make and the ingredients are simple and healthy for you. The directions are written in such a way to assist those who struggle in the kitchen so unless you have a habit of burning water you shouldn't have any trouble with the meals and snacks suggested here.

I'm not all that into cooking myself so while people who've dealt with cookbooks before may have found this lacking in some way, I have to say that as the average Jo I wasn't too dissapointed. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A lifesaver
This is the book for people with low blood sugar. It details all the effects of a bad diet. The author's personal story is worth the read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have if you are hypoglycemic!
This book gave me a clear view of what hypoglycemia was all about. It gave me information my Dr. did not. It answered all my questions. I showed it to my Dr. and he said he wouldrecommend it to his other hypoglycemic patients. It is a "must read".

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Overview
Of all the research I have done on blood sugar and hypoglycemia over the past year, I was convinced that there wasn't anything new that yet another book on hypoglycemia could say.I was wrong!I found this book to be quite amazing and the most complete that I have read so far.Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any good books out there explaining blood sugar regulation as a whole, only the two extremes... hypoglycemia and diabetes.

I am a strong believer in naturopathic medicine and the use of complimentary medicine. So this book may have things that the typical main stream community doesn't believe in (hypoglycemia itself, but also the benefits of raw milk, etc). This is a book that gives a general overview of all things related to hypoglycemia, the history, what it is, what it means, management, etc.Even recipes. For good general purpose recipes, use "500 low-carb recipes" by Dana Carpender. It has become my cookbook bible. But the recipes in this book offer a bit of variety that one might not normally find in the average low-carb cookbook.Variety is always a good thing in a diet that can feel restricted at times!

However, as previously stated in another post, be careful about the diet restrictions and supplement recommendations.Hypoglycemia can have devastating effects that are highly personalized and as this book stresses, every individual has their own special nutritional needs.Seek a good nutritionist or even a naturopath (if you feel comfortable with that) who is trained extensively in both nutrition and giving medical care.Don't ever take a book or (even your doctor/nutritionist's) words as ultimate truth, always always research all sides of an recommendation.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Pioneering Work
This is the revised version of the pioneering book by Harvey Ross, MD. It has been revised after his death and updated to include topics written by other doctors. PLEASE do not be put off by the recipes, which are not to my taste either, or the radical side-topics by the new doctors. It was revised with the good intentions of appealing to a wider audience. What is of MAJOR IMPORTANCE are the parts that were actually written by Dr. Ross addressing hypoglycemia. This disease has never been taken seriously enough and now, in spite of the modern hoopla over the glycemic index and insulin resistance, TRUE HYPOGLYCEMICS still get lost in the shuffle. The GI is actually not very helpful to hypoglycemics because shades of grey among foods we shouldn't be eating in the first place don't matter. To really recover from this disease, it must be treated as its own illness. Dr. Ross elevates understanding to the proper level. And the tragic story about Jeraldine's daughter gives the graphic impact needed to take it seriously. I was a patient of Dr. Ross's in 1985. He saved my life. Get this book for the pioneering information on hypoglycemia and the interpretation of the 5-hour glucose tolerance test.

1-0 out of 5 stars Totally non-evidenced based
I am a physician, recently diagnosed with reactive hypoglycemia myself.I read this book at the local bookstore, hoping to find a good book on hypoglycemia.Although the book starts off well, it then leads to non-evidenced based recommendations that go as far as recommending to eliminate dairy products from your diet altogether, and recommending mega doses of many vitamins and supplements.I am a big fan of integrative medicine, but please, as with any medical advice, there needs to be more evidence to back up these claims that can lead to potential health problems (especially with the mega doses of vitamins).I do not recommend this book, and in fact find it irresponsible to title it "The Classic Healthcare Handbook, " when there is little or no evidence behind many of the "healthcare" recommendations they make. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good introductory book on hypoglycemia
This book is a great source if you're looking to learn about hypoglycemia. The author writes from her own experience, and shares some experience from other hypoglycemics. Her overview of the disease and its symptoms is easy to read, and doesn't overload on medical jargon. The book includes a discussion of how hypoglycemia is diagnosed, and gives tips about how to talk with your doctor or health care professional about it.Tips are also included about diet, including some review of often suggested diets for hypoglycemia.Tips are also included in some detail about possibly helpful supplements. The author advocates eliminating sugar from the diet completely, and following a complex carbohydrate & protein based diet.I thought the book was very informative, but found myself wishing for more detail about the diet - specifically regarding those foods that fit the suggested parameters.A helpful read nonetheless.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific Book on Hypoglycemia
This is an excellent book on hypoglycemia. It is comprehensive, balanced, and well written.People with hypoglycemia typically abuse sugar.I'm a recovering sugar addict with a genetic tendency toward low blood sugar.Anita's suggestions are helping me get the low blood sugar aspect of sugar addiction under control.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Two Faces of Sugar
Anita Flegg's book, "Hyperglycemia The Other Sugar Disease" is a timely, must have book that everyone should read.
The author chose to share the knowledge she learned from experts in the field as she is a fellow Hypoglycemic. The book mainly covers chronic Hypoglycemia and how you can control and live with it by making changes in your lifestyle and diet.
The beginning of each chapter showcases a person with the disease and their story. "Hypoglycemia" defines what the disease is, the cause and effect of it and how to recognize the symptoms that may point to a diagnosis.
An informative, useful, step-by-step workbook is included. It gives you a symptom checklist and teaches you how to track your eating habits by using a food journal. You are shown how to change when and what you eat, reduce your sugar intake and find hidden sugars in foods.
This is a well researched book that lists all of Ms. Flegg's sources. She also supplies the list of organizations where a Hypoglycemic can find support groups.
This is a book everyone can benefit from as they take care of their health. A definite help and one you will turn to time after time in your quest for a better life. Congratulations Ms. Flegg for giving the public a definitive book on the disease.

5-0 out of 5 stars Support Is Sweet
If you are wondering why you feel lousy, have mood swings and can't master your cravings for certain foods, this book may hold your answer. I tried for years to figure out if I had a food allergy or some other problem. Even doctors didn't seem to understand my symptoms. What a relief to read Anita Flegg's excellent book about "The Other Sugar Disease". Armed with information I put her suggestions to the test -- and THEY WORKED! It has changed the quality of my life. I wish I had found this book years ago.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mayra Calvani -- TCM REVIEWS
This informative book will be of interest to sufferers of hypoglycemia as well as anybody who is interested in knowing about the disease or suspect they may have it. The author is not a doctor or expert, so the book is more a practical guide that offers general information without being too detailed or technical. That said, the book seems to be well researched, as one can guess from the extended bibliography.

Major topics include what hypoglycemia is, the symptoms, diagnosis, testing and interpretation, the Do's and Don'ts, the use of supplements, among others. Flegg compares various diets like the South Beach Diet, Rosedale, and Atkins and their influences on hypoglycemics.

At the end there's also a helpful workbook to help hypoglycemics keep track of their dietary progress step by step. The information is well organized and structured, the language straight forward, and the style engaging.

If you're new to hypoglycemia, this is the perfect book to begin with before jumping into heavier books. It will give you a general, clear idea of this misunderstood condition that strikes so many people.

2-0 out of 5 stars Follow this guy's advice at your peril
He's not a real doctor. He has no credible degree(s) in nutrition. He's just another layman who thinks he and he alone has the "truth" about one thing or another. There is "truth" in every fallacy, but never the whole truth. Where he is truthful, he has just reiterated what most nutritionists recommend, so there's nothing new there. But there are also some downright dangerous and counterproductive recommendations in this book and if your health is at risk, you would do well to get second and third opinions before following his more extreme diet recommendations.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst book on the subject of hypoglycemia
This is the worst book I've read on the subject of hypoglycemia. He gives erroneous information that would make anyone with hypoglycemia feel even worst.Such as a diet that includes beans or breakfast that only includes carbs. This would increase the symptoms, not mitigate them.I suspect his professional claims.

1-0 out of 5 stars Jenny Craig, 1996!
copyright, 1996: Fat sucks. Eat your carbohydrates. Eat your carbohydrates.
Eat your carbohydrates. Eat your carbohydrates. Eat your carbohydrates. Eat your carbohydrates. Eat your carbohydrates. Eat your carbohydrates.
This is another Atkins hater. Low carb couldn't help your blood sugar prob, could it? Of course not! Better stir fry another ten pounds of Chinese vegatables. Oh, yeah, we all do that! Fat will kill you. Eat your carbohydrates. Bok Choy, letuce juice, dark veggies everything, 13 pounds a day, veggies, veggies, veggies till you puke or go broke, then buy some more veggies! This idiot is OUT OF TOUCH! He is just puking the same stuff Richard Simmons did in 1992.

4-0 out of 5 stars A book your doctor can learn from
As a hypoglycemic, I am trying to find out what I can do to keep my blood sugar level.Dr. Murray provides the reader with more suggestions than just eating right and exercising. The addition of supplements is very helpful. He also educates on the connection between hypoglycemia and diabetes. This is important for hypolycemics to know since it is very possible for this condition to turn into diabetes.

I highly recommend Hypoglycemia: The Classic Healthcare Handbook, by Jeraldine Saunders and Harvey M. Ross in addition to this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book saved me many years ago.
In college i was having all types of serious negative symptoms without explanation and they were getting worse. The doctors i saw misdiagnosed my problem even going so far as to have me try anti-convulsive meds. My aunt mentioned her son had similar symptoms and was diagnosed with hypoglycemia and she recommended this book. I then requested a glucose tolerance test and matched it to the samples in this book. Finally, a diagnosis and treatment approach! After following this book's guidelines on diet, supplements and lifestyle my symptoms disappeared or become minor and manageable allowing me to move forward with my life. i will always be grateful to this author and publisher for putting out a book that helped me regain control of my life at a crucial time. There are more recent books available but for me this book remains my reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars And The Truth Shall Set You Free
Truth is never misguided or outdated, and Dr. Paavo Airola found the truth (concerning the diet and health issues) as only a minority before or since him have. I make a similar statement in the book that I am writing on the subject. Nothing speaks like experience, and as one who has overcome serious disease through natural means and invested nearly a decade in research after having done so, I realize that Dr. Airola knew exactly what he was talking about. May I also suggest that one investigate Dr. Max Gerson, especially if one wants to know how to avoid or overcome that so-called "mystery" disease: CANCER. (Amazon carries one book written by Gerson and several written about him and his method.) And the book The China Study, by T. Colin Campbell (2005) helps illustrate the fact that the dietary and health truth that Dr. Airola found is far from outdated! In fact, the Truth is still waiting for us to catch up to It!

5-0 out of 5 stars Hypoglycemia: A better approach
I received this book in excellent condition, in a "very" timely fashion. I was very pleased with our transaction! Thank You. LB

5-0 out of 5 stars This book saved my life!
I had gone to the Dr. to find out why I was not feeling well.He had no clue.I demanded a glucose tolerance test. After viewing the results he just told me to "watch it".Watch what??? I tried to get a diet from the dietitian at the hospital. She said I had to get a "diet prescription" from my Dr.!So I tried my OB-GYN.He gave me the high-protein diet.I lost 20# in one month and was very lethargic.Plus, my toddler daughter was beginning to develop breast tissue from all of the hormones in the meats we were consuming (another story!!)
I wandered into a health food store one day and chatted with the proprietor who was an RN.She said "You must read this book!"I did and it saved my life.I have gone on to become a Certified Nutritionist and have recommended this book many, many times. It is hard to find though!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Misguided and outdated
This book was written in the 1970's, which I wish I had paid attention to before ordering. Its very much an outdated book. I thought the diet he constructed to help hypoclycemia was all wrong. Its a high carb, low protein diet. He talks about the evils of protein which I don't agree with at all. I just did not like this book! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars IMPORTANT: If you own the cookbook, you won't need this book!
I ordered this as a download for 59.99 at another site because something at Amazon.com kept pushing back the shipping date. I'm out a nonrefundable 59.99 BECAUSE this book has the EXACT same information as the COOKBOOK! There is an added section on history. Her blog has all the same information about testing--this was DEFINITELY not worth the $60!

Stephanie Kenrose has very helpful information, and she's helped me GREATLY! But her sourcebook is not definitive, and her cookbook is far more relevant and useful to a hypoglycemics needs.

It begs the question why the book is not "viewable" before purchase. Very disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic read on reactive hypoglycemia
In this day and age, it is all too clear that we cannot rely on the professionals to tell us everything about our medical conditions. This is a fantastic source of information for reactive hypoglycemia. What helped me the most was the chapter on treatment options, with a list of tips to avoid an attack, and the chapter on sample diets and suggested foods. A great read for anyone who thinks they may have this condition, or knows that they suffer from it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Didn't find this book very helpful
This book is only 71 pages and way over priced. I didn't find it very helpful at all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Source of Help!
Stephanie Kenrose used her experience to write a guide for others who are in a similar situation. While she has a great amount of information, medical terms and resources, it is written in a way that anyone can understand and follow. It allows you to ascertain the basics and follow through with all of the resources she provides. This information gives you a basis to go to your own physician well informed so that you can better discuss the problem.I imagine this book will help a great number of people find a solution to unanswered questions and provides hope to those who feel doomed. An easy read, fantastic information!

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, Factual and Accurate Sourcebook
When I started to read The Reactive Hypoglycemia Sourcebook by Stephanie Kenrose, I became so engross with it for it is exceptionally interesting and was delivered very well that the layman and not just medically inclined people would be able to understand. Kenrose shared about her experiences together with her son of the risk of having reactive hypoglycemia and how sometimes this is misdiagnosed. It is extremely informative not just for people who have the disease but for other people not diagnosed as well. This book is essential for it gives you a clear view of the day to day event of a person with such disease and what they should do to manage it. I highly recommend that you buy this book. This can also help you know that you might be hypoglycemic too.

4-0 out of 5 stars HLEPFUL QUICK GUIDE
This is a helpful book if you are looking for a quick guide to daily decisions about hypoglycemia.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good beginning information
I give this book three stars not because it's not that great, but because it's almost two decades old.It has some pretty good advice and guidelines, but there are other books out there that have better information and advice due to more recent research. Also, the author talks a lot about how hard it is to get doctors to help patients, and how nobody takes this condition seriously. In my experience it has not been difficult at all.I told my doctor the symptoms, and he immediately suggested hypoglycemia and administered the test right away.I would imagine this is due to that fact that this condition has been studied and researched, and the medical community agrees that it is a legitimate problem.
So, I would say this is a good book to start out with, but definately make sure you read more recent books. Also, don't think you will not get good treatment from the medical community based on the experiences in this book.It is much easier to get treatment and support these days. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Real Deal
Having overcome serious disease with diet changes and having spent years researching the subjects of diet and health, I know that Paavo Airola was one of the greatest nutritionists to ever put a pen to paper. Hypoglycemia is so widespread that most Americans suffer from it, though this is a highly-suppressed fact. Why? Because it threatens the multi-billion dollar refined "food" and medical industries. The cure for hypoglycemia is also the cure for obesity and most degenerative diseases, and Paavo Airola is one of the few who gives you the correct answer: remove the refined and overly-processed man-made non-foods from your diet and replace them with whole foods, especially vegetables, and even more especially raw vegetables. If you are ready for Truth, this is your hypoglycemia book! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is radical and contradictory.
I find the approach suggested in this book to be too radical to be realistically followed. The book refers to and has positive quotes from some popular experts but contradicts their nutrutional approach byadvocating a high carb, low protein diet.

3-0 out of 5 stars Informative with lackluster recipes
