The workshop will start at 10 a.m. on Monday, December 9 and finish at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, December 10. The poster session and a buffet will take place in the evening of December 9. The HITRAP Workshop will discuss the physics program and technical as well as financial issues of the HITRAP project at GSI . The project is supported by the EU as an RTD network. HITRAP will provide highly-charged ions up to U cooled and stored at 4 K or as beams with very low energy.     Extractions: A Bose-Einstein Condensate is an extraordinary new state of matter that owes its very existence to the quantum statistics of identical particles with integer spin quantum numbers. It was predicted theoretically by Bose and Einstein 70 years ago, but first observed in 1995. We have recently succeeded in producing a condensate, joining the small number of groups around the world which have also observed BEC. R aman L aser Raman lasers are different from most lasers because the pumping process is stimulated Raman scattering ; a coherent process which directly transfers the atom from the initial to the final state without occupying the intermediate excited state.     Extractions: The use of nuclear energy in society is certainly one of the most widely debated and probably one of the most widely misunderstood topics in physics today. The public understanding gap needs to be addressed, so that scientifically literate people will be able to make well-informed decisions regarding the use of nuclear energy. It could be argued that an understanding of nuclear energy is a basic requirement for all students. In order to be able to make such informed decisions, people need a solid knowledge base upon which to form opinions. This Optional Unit is intended to provide students with a further extension of Core Unit IV A broader base of knowledge and information will enable students to form opinions and debate the use of nuclear energy. Research in modern physics is continuing. Topic E, contemporary physics, allows teachers and students to examine some of this research further. Because of the current, ongoing nature of this topic, it is one which is best developed independently, by teachers and students.     Extractions: Top Atom Interferometry BEC Bottom ... Our atomic physics subgroup We use laser-cooled cesium atoms in atomic fountains to perform precision measurements. Efforts have been ongoing for about a decade to measure the fine structure constant a and local gravity g with sensitivity and accuracy higher than any previous method. Atoms in magneto-optic traps are launched in moving optical molasses with a temperature of about 2 m K. The temperature can further be reduced through Raman sideband cooling in a moving optical lattice to about 150 nK. These atoms then enter a magnetically well-shielded region where atom interferometry is performed. Beamsplitters and mirrors for the interferometer are formed by pulses of laser light which drive velocity selective stimulated Raman transitions between magnetic field insensitive hyperfine ground states. The use of ultra-cold atoms, atomic fountains and hyperfine ground states allow interrogation time of up to 1 second thereby improving the precision of such measurements by orders of magnitude. [Top] We are currently working on producing a BEC of Rb. Our apparatus has several unique features which should allow us to produce Bose-condensed atoms at an unprecedented rate: First, we will use 3D Raman Sideband cooling in optical lattices as a precooling stage to evaporation in a conventional magnetic trap. We hope to demonstrate that a large BEC can be produced fast enough to permit the use of a single vapor cell with modest background pressure, removing the need for complicated double MOT or Zeeman slower-based systems. Our apparatus also incorporates a double magnetic trap design, which will give us the possibility of extreme adiabatic compression of our sample before evaporation, potentially shortening the evaporation time even further.

Precision measurements of forbidden transitions strengths, hyperfine structure, and atomic lifetimes test many-body calculations important to the interpretation of parity nonconservation (PNC) in atoms and atomic structure in general. The similarity of our interests strongly enhances the interaction between the theoretical and experimental atomic physics groups at Notre Dame.
