Product Description

Although based on lectures given for graduate students and postgraduates starting in plasma physics, this concise introduction to the fundamental processes and tools is as well directed at established researchers who are newcomers to spectroscopy and seek quick access to the diagnostics of plasmas ranging from low- to high-density technical systems at low temperatures, as well as from low- to high-density hot plasmas. Basic ideas and fundamental concepts are introduced as well as typical instrumentation from the X-ray to the infrared spectral regions. Examples, techniques and methods illustrate the possibilities.

This book directly addresses the experimentalist who actually has to carry out the experiments and their interpretation. For that reason about half of the book is devoted to experimental problems, the instrumentation, components, detectors and calibration.

Product Description

This book deals with theoretical thermodynamics and the statistical physics of electron and particle gases. While treating the laws of thermodynamics from both classical and quantum theoretical viewpoints, it posits that the basis of the statistical theory of macroscopic properties of a system is the microcanonical distribution of isolated systems, from which all canonical distributions stem. To calculate the free energy, the Gibbs method is applied to ideal and non-ideal gases, and also to a crystalline solid. Considerable attention is paid to the Fermi-Dirac and Bose-Einstein quantum statistics and its application to different quantum gases, and electron gas in both metals and semiconductors is considered in a nonequilibrium state. A separate chapter treats the statistical theory of thermodynamic properties of an electron gas in a quantizing magnetic field.

64. Radiative Processes in Atomic Physics
by Vladimir P. Krainov, Howard R. Reiss, Boris M. Smirnov
Hardcover: 312 Pages (1997-07)

Isbn: 0471125334

Editorial Review

Product Description
Much of the material that is essential to the development of a complete understanding of radiative processes in atomic physics is not to be found in the standard atomic physics textbooks. This remarkable volume breaks new ground on two fronts: It provides a comprehensive description of the contemporary treatment of radiative processes in atoms; and it presents this material in a useful and engaging format—a succession of problems.

The problem-and-solution method has the advantage of making particularly clear precisely the topic being developed, as well as providing a strong focus on the basic principles and tools available for the solution of the problems. In the process of presenting a logically evolving series of problems, it is possible to provide an understanding of the subject matter at the level of current research.

Although it is assumed that the reader is familiar with quantum mechanics, a set of appendices provides an overview of the principles used most often in the treatment of radiative problems in atomic and molecular physics. Basic tools of the quantum treatment of angular momentum, including rotation functions, Clebsch-Gordan coefficients, and the Wigner 3j and 6j symbols are reviewed. There are summaries of aids to calculation in atomic physics, such as the density matrix method and fractional parentage coefficients. Two sections are devoted to quantities that arise in strong-field, nonperturbative problems.

This essential reference work and advanced textbook is best suited for graduate students and researchers in the fields of quantum mechanics, atomic and molecular physics, plasma physics, laser physics, and synchrotron light-source applications.

A timely treatment of an important topic —a useful and engaging format

Radiative Processes in Atomic Physics offers advanced students and researchers an up-to-date quantum treatment of the interaction of atoms with electromagnetic radiation. Problems and solutions are used to develop concepts, terminology, and the principal results of the quantum theory of radiative processes in atoms.

Among the concepts covered in this advanced textbook and reference are:

  • Radiative transitions between discrete states in atomic systems
  • Atomic photoprocesses involving free particles
  • Coherent phenomena in radiative transitions
  • Extensive treatment of line-broadening mechanisms
  • Atoms in strong fields
  • Theory of angular momentum, including rotation functions, Clebsch-Gordan coefficients, and the Wigner 3j and 6j symbols; fractional parentage coefficients; density matrices; atomic units; and nonperturbative measures of intensity

Product Description
A comprehensive, unified treatment of present-day nuclear physics-the fresh edition of a classic text/reference.

"A fine and thoroughly up-to-date textbook on nuclear physics . . . most welcome." -Physics Today (on the First Edition).

What sets Introductory Nuclear Physics apart from other books on the subject is its presentation of nuclear physics as an integral part of modern physics. Placing the discipline within a broad historical and scientific context, it makes important connections to other fields such as elementary particle physics and astrophysics.

Now fully revised and updated, this Second Edition explores the changing directions in nuclear physics, emphasizing new developments and current research-from superdeformation to quark-gluon plasma. Author Samuel S.M. Wong preserves those areas that established the First Edition as a standard text in university physics departments, focusing on what is exciting about the discipline and providing a concise, thorough, and accessible treatment of the fundamental aspects of nuclear properties.

In this new edition, Professor Wong:
* Includes a chapter on heavy-ion reactions-from high-spin states to quark-gluon plasma
* Adds a new chapter on nuclear astrophysics
* Relates observed nuclear properties to the underlying nuclear interaction and the symmetry principles governing subatomic particles
* Regroups material and appendices to make the text easier to use
* Lists Internet links to essential databases and research projects
* Features end-of-chapter exercises using real-world data.

Introductory Nuclear Physics, Second Edition is an ideal text for courses in nuclear physics at the senior undergraduate or first-year graduate level. It is also an important resource for scientists and engineers working with nuclei, for astrophysicists and particle physicists, and for anyone wishing to learn more about trends in the field. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars for experimentalists and theorists
Wong has updated his first edition extensively. The text is directed at the senior undergraduate level or graduate level in physics. Unlike freshman texts in many fields, the style of the book is still akin to traditional physics texts. Inasmuch as it eshews the use of colour diagrams or coloured textual sections. But within the "plain" nature of the text is a huge amount of detailed descriptions. Both of theory and experimental results. At least one full year of quantum mechanics is needed as background. Especially in time dependent perturbation theory. The text is of equal value whether you plan to major in theory or experiment.

Also useful is the context in which Wong sets nuclear physics, relative to other branches of physics. You get some appreciation of interdisciplinary issues.

The problem sets in each chapter are nontrivial and worthy of your attention. ... Read more

Product Description
"Semiconductor Quantum Dots" presents an overview of the background and recent developments in the rapidly growing field of ultrasmall semiconductor microscrystallites, in which the carrier confinement is sufficiently strong to allow only quantized states of the electrons and holes. The main emphasis of this book is the theoretical analysis of the confinement induced modifications of the optical and electronic properties of quantum dots in comparison to extended materials. The book develops the theoretical background material for the analysis of carrier quantum-confinement effects, it introduces different confinement regimes for absolute or center-of-mass motion quantization of the electron-hole-pairs, and it gives an overview of the best approximation schemes for each regime. A detailed discussion of the carrier states in quantum dots is presented, including variational calculations, a configuration interaction approach, and quantum Monte Carlo techniques. Surface polarization instabilities are analyzed which lead to the self-trapping of carriers near the surface of the dots and the influence of spin-orbit coupling on the quantum-confined carrier states is discussed. The linear and nonlinear optical properties of small and large quantum dots are analyzed in detail, including transient optical nonlinearities (photon echo) and two-photon transitions. The influence of the quantum-dot size distribution in many realistic samples is outlined, including the analysis of quantum dot growth laws and universal size distributions. Phonons in quantum dots, as well as the influence of external electric or magnetic fields are discussed. The recent developments dealing with regular systems of quantum dots are reviewed, including a lattice model of quantum dots and quantum dot superlattices. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Selected papers by Aage Bohr
This is a collection of seven lectures by Niels H. D. Bohr, selected by his son Aage Bohr. The essays are about atomic physics challenges (by that time: 1950's), relation between Physics and other sciences and quantum theory philosophical implications. The papers are quite formal, so you rather like Bohr himself and his ideas and should not look this book as a source of information on quantum mechanics (in fact you should have already read something about this subject). If you're interested in Niels Bohr and his ideas and also on the thoughts of physicists by that time this book is a nice reference and can be useful, specially the essay of Bohr and Einstein discussing determinism on quantum theory and the future of the wave equation theory. ... Product Description
The topics in this volume include the ideas of mathematicians, physicists and chemists in the area of multiparticle scattering theory. Scattering theory (or collision theory as it is often called) is a fundamental area of theory and computation in both physics and chemistry. The correct formulation of scattering theory for two-body collisions is now well worked out, but systems with three or more particles still present fundamental unmet challenges, both in the formulations of the problem and in the interpretation of computational results. A key issue in the mathematical foundations is asymptotic completeness, which says that any state of a quantum system is a superposition of bound and scattering states. Key issues on the physical side are concerned with boundary conditions, electromagnetic fields, effective potentials and resonances. ... Read more
