5-0 out of 5 stars Intermediate text, very readable, conversational tone...
Born and Wolf is a classic, but tough sledding at times. If it is a common topic in optics, you probably will prefer reading about it here instead. This book has a nice conversational tone, gives insight, and is reasonably detailed (but not exhaustive). It includes a lot of practical advice in small-type paragraphs in margins throughout the book (for example, the chapter on thin films notes that the refractive index can often vary with deposition method, etc.). ... Editorial Review

Product Description
The definition of "photonics" has been broadened in recent years to include nonlinear and quantum optics, today usually based on laser light. This book covers the fundamental properties of photon and light beams, both experimentally and theoretically. It covers the essentials of linear interactions and most of the nonlinear interactions between light and matter in both the transparent and absorbing cases. It also provides a basic knowledge of modern lasers, as well as the principles of nonlinear optical spectroscopy. It is self-consistent and enriched by a large number of calculated illustrations, examples, and descriptive tables. Graduate students in physics and electrical engineering, as well as other sciences, will find this book a thorough introduction to the field, while for lecturers and scientists it offers a rich source of useful information and a ready-to-hand reference. About 4000 references open access to original literature.

Product Description

This smooth introduction for advanced undergraduates starts with the fundamentals of lasers and pulsed optics. Thus prepared, the student is introduced to short and ultrashort laser pulses, and learns how to generate, manipulate, and measure them. Spectroscopic implications are also discussed. The second edition has been completely revised and includes two new chapters on some of the most promising and fast-developing applications in ultrafast phenomena: coherent control and attosecond pulses.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fairly good but not excellent
The second edition of this book is revised and enriched with new and hot materials. The concepts of "coherent control" and "attosecond pulses" are added as they become more and more significant.

The first 3 chapters of the books do not seem very useful. Although the authors tried their best, especially the discussion of "mode-locking" is not as clearly stated as Demtroder's "Laser Spectroscopy". More vivid, illustrative and tangible examples would be very useful.

The rest of the book can be considered good and in my opinion this books does not deserve more than 4 stars.

4-0 out of 5 stars This short book is an excellent overview
I use femtosecond lasers in my graduate work, and I found this book an excellent source of review material in preparing for my oral examinations. It is not very detailed or mathematical, but has excellentphenomenonological discussions of a variety of laser properties andtechniques. It is also handy because it is fairly recent. I foundparticularly useful the sections on amplification, semiconductor lasers, and ultrashort diagnostics.

This book is not a comprehensive guide tobuilding and using an ultrashort pulse laser system because it lacks somuch detail. However, the equations are explained very well, and thereferences seem fairly comprehensive.

The book is also completelymissing a discussion of fiber laser and ultrashort pulse propogation infibers. The section on nonlinear ultrashort optics is also far too brief. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "The" laser tome.
Most undergraduate and graduate classes use this book and it is an absolutely amazingly well-written book. I remember as an undergrad. this book was a little confusing but now with more experience in the field of laser and optics I see why this book is so highly regarded. The book hasn't been updated so its missing some more recent topics in lasers but it is still an amazing book. Check out Silfvast and Demtroder for other books that are also well written and offer some expounding on some topics that this book is weak on.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book with detailed explanation
This book contains all the information a student would need to learn about lasers from a classical stand point of view. Unlike most other books fail to explain many aspects of lasers, this book does the job just right.

5-0 out of 5 stars Big Ol' Laser Book
This isn't a coffee table book. This is a coffee table.Seriously, this book is humongous. But, if you want to know anything about light, lasers or the meaning of life (for a physicist), then this is the book for you. Also, the writing style is refreshingly human for a physics text, along the lines of Griffiths or Hecht.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
Perhaps the most complete and in-depth book on lasers out there with great narrative and not just a bunch of equations thrown at you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for the laser physics and engineering!
This book provides the very good and thorough overview of the modern as well as classical laser physics. I recommend this book for a serious laser scientist and engineer. Starting from the black-body radiation to the quantum-well semiconductor lasers, it touches upon various aspects, including mathematical models, governing equations. ... Read more

Product Description

This book represents the most up-to-date description of the state of the art in laser and light source technology.

After an initial chapter describing the latest understanding of laser physics and safety, subsequent chapters take up the laser treatment, respectively, of vascular lesions, pigmented lesions and tattoos, unwanted hair, ablative and non-ablative resurfacing, and its use for medical purposes.

Very practical and reader-friendly: Each chapter is very well-illustrated, and includes quick and easy bullet points and repetitive structure such as core concepts, currently available technologies, indications and contraindications, and an example of each author’s consent form and personal treatment approaches.

The Editor, Goldberg, speaker of the American Academy of Dermatology, gathered world experts from North America and Europe for this volume. He actively promotes his publications on his webpage and already got the cover and URL to link to the Springer page www.skinandlasers.com.

Product Description
The first comprehensive treatment of long-wavelength laser technology

Because of very strong molecular absorption between 2 mm to 1000 mm, compact semiconductor lasers in this spectral range are ideal components for a wide variety of applications ranging from ultra-sensitive detection of molecules, to the study of fine structures of molecules, to studies of the origin of the universe. However, because of the very rapid progress made in these long-wavelength semiconductor lasers in recent years, no comprehensive information covering the entire field has been available up to this point.

Long-Wavelength Infrared Semiconductor Lasers fills the need for a reference that covers the vast scope of coherent semiconductor sources that emit in this important spectral region. Written by today’s foremost experts in the field, the book covers the latest knowledge in the areas of:

  • Quantum cascade lasers
  • Interband mid-infrared lasers fabricated from InGaAs,antimonides, and lead-salt materials
  • Hot-hole lasers
  • Photomixers

Researchers, application engineers, graduate students, and others who develop mid- to far-infrared emitters and use them for spectroscopy, astrophysics, environmental monitoring, and process control will find Long-Wavelength Infrared Semiconductor Lasers a necessary resource. ... Read more

Product Description
This book presents the first comprehensive collection of solvedproblems in laser physics covering both fundamental and appliedaspects of laser science and technology. The framework of the book, including structuring of topics and notations, closely follows thatadopted in the Principles of Laser book by Professor O. Svelto. The collection of problems presented in this book appears therefore anatural complement to Svelto's textbook for testing and developing theskills acquired in the reading of the theory; however, it may also bea useful support to any general textbook on laser physics, whereinproblems are usually not solved in detail. We remark that this is, toour knowledge, the first book to provide a complete and satisfactoryset of solved problems in such a highly developing field of scienceand technology. The problems fall mainly into three distinctcategories: (i) numerical/applied problems, which help thereader to become confident and familiar with the basic concepts andmethods of laser physics, and to acquire a feeling for numericalparameters entering in real-world laser systems; (ii) complementaryproblems, that present in detail demonstrations of some analyticalparts not given in the textbook; and (iii) advanced problems, aimed either to provide a deeper understanding of the subject or tocover more recent developments in the field. Audience: This book is primarily intended for undergraduate andgraduate students in physics, engineering, and chemistry. However, itmay also be a useful tool for industrial professionals working in thefield of laser technologies and laser applications, as well as forresearchers interested in basic aspects of real-world lasers andrelated fields. ...
