Product Description
This volume contains selected papers for the Parcella '88, the Fourth International Workshop on "Parallel Processing by Cellular Automata and Arrays" held in Berlin from October 17 to 21, 1988. The profile of the Parcella workshop series is focused on problems of processing by regular structures, i.e. their "flexibilization" or adapting to "irregular" algorithms and, closely related to this, on the "regularization" of algorithms for their embedding into regular structures. It seems that these problems will have an increasing priority within the list of central problems in parallelization and will determine the profile of Parcella for the next years. ... Read more

Product Description
The book introduces a powerful new global perspective for the study of discrete dynamical systems. After first looking at the unique trajectory of a system's future, an algorithm is also presented that directly computes the multiple merging trajectories that may have constituted the system's past. A given set of cellular parameters will, in a sense, crystallize state space into a set of basins of attraction that will typically have the topology of branching trees rooted on attractor cycles. The book makes accessible the explicit portraits of these mathematical objects through computer-generated graphics. (Book/disk package disk requires an 80286, or higher, IBM PC or compatible with 640K of memory, VGA graphics, and DOS 2.0 or higher. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars pretty and interesting images
Cellular automata are a fascinating field, and this book summarises some research done on them in the early 90s. The dynamics are described. There are different types of behaviour depending on the given choices of CA. Typically, a specific CA has some parameters, which are then tweaked to scrutinise the CA.

There are many black and white and colour images. The latter are sometimes quite pretty. But even the black and white images often show interesting structures.

The code referred to by the book ran on computers that are now obsolete. So too is the floppy [who uses these anymore?] that accompanies the book. But a diligent reader should be able to reproduce and recompile the code for newer machines. ... Read more

Product Description

Molecular Modeling using Cellular Automata provides a practical introduction to an exciting modeling paradigm for complex systems. The book first discusses the nature of scientific inquiry using models and simulations, and then describes the nature of cellular automata models. It then gives detailed descriptions, with examples and exercises, of how cellular automata models can be used in the study of a wide variety chemical, physical, and biochemical phenomena. Topics covered include models of water itself, solution phenomena, solution interactions with stationary systems, first- and second-order kinetic phenomena, enzyme kinetics, vapor-liquid equilibrium, and atomic and molecular excited-state kinetics. The student experiences these systems through hands-on examples and guided studies, and there is room for further original experimentation using the accompanying computer program (on CD Rom).

This book is the first of its kind: a textbook and a laboratory manual about cellular automata modeling of common systems in chemistry. It is not only a text, but includes a CD Rom which allows readily-assimilated, real-time experience with the methodology and practice of cellular automata simulations. The book is designed to be used as a text in undergraduate courses dealing with complex systems and/or as a computational supplement to laboratory courses taught at the undergraduate level.

The book includes:

- Compact descriptions of a large variety of physical and chemical phenomena

- An accompanying program (CD) for the study of these phenomena

- Illustrative examples of simulations, with exercises for further study

- An instructor's manual for use of the program

The book will be of great value in undergraduate courses in chemistry, physics, biology, applied mathematics, and bioinformatics, and as a supplement for laboratory courses in introductory chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, medicinal chemistry, chemical engineering and other courses dealing with statistical and dynamic systems. It allows the exploration of a wide range of dynamic phenomena, many of which are not normally accessible within conventional laboratory settings due to limitations of time, cost, and experimental equipment.

Product Description
Lattice-gas cellular automata (LGCA) and lattice Boltzmann models (LBM) are relatively new and promising methods for the numerical solution of nonlinear partial differential equations. The book provides an introduction for graduate students and researchers. Working knowledge of calculus is required and experience in PDEs and fluid dynamics is recommended. Some peculiarities of cellular automata are outlined in Chapter 2. The properties of various LGCA and special coding techniques are discussed in Chapter 3. Concepts from statistical mechanics (Chapter 4) provide the necessary theoretical background for LGCA and LBM. The properties of lattice Boltzmann models and a method for their construction are presented in Chapter 5. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars often inspiring, but not self-contained
This book is extremely well structured -as apparent from its table of contents. It describes and motivates the evolution from cellular automata to lattice-gas cellular automata to lattice Boltzmann schemes. It tells its story in a very brief yet lucid way. The text points to valuable references for further reading or for further explanation.

The main drawback is that -after all- it sometimes really are 'just' lecture notes in mathematics (being an aid mainly for those who follow the lectures). *Some* of the important derivations are very short and formal, with implicit mathematical shortcuts, and without giving any physical interpretation of the main formula's. In addition, once too often the reader is referred to the scientific literature -which is not always easily accessible. In other words: the book is not self-contained.

Nevertheless, I truly enjoyed reading the book from back to back, even though I had to work hard to get through some sections.

Product Description
In recent years, a discussion of fundamentally new computer concepts has been stirred up by new developments in various scientific areas. Even in the newspapers one could find articles containing evocative terms like ´Quantum Computers´ or ´Molecular Computers´.

The background is the need for better performing computers in applications which require an extremely high parallelism or a special behaviour such as the simulation of quantum systems. Examples include the design of a turbine with about 100 parts, a realistic simulation of for instance only 40 electrons in a solid, and the search for the shortest telephone line that connects 100 cities scattered over a country. These require calculations that is far beyond the power of conventional computers!

This exciting book provides the first overview of and introduction to the chemical, biological and physical non-standard computation concepts which promise to solve these problems by a massive parallelism and a clever use of other effects: Molecular and Quantum Computers, and Genetic Algorithms.

Written on a scientific level, it is an up-to-date information source for scientists and graduate students working in the field in physics, chemistry, computer and life sciences as well as interested readers with a scientific background.

Product Description
In the monograph we present certain results of the work we have done in mathematical theory of the classical homogeneous structures {HS; English synonym "Cellular Automata (CA)"} during 1969-2010, in truth with considerable enough pauses. These results form the essential enough part of the HS-problems. In particular, we have considered such problems as the nonconstructability problem in classical HS, decomposition of global transition functions, extremal constructive opportunities of classical HS, complexity of finite configurations and global transition functions in classical HS, parallel formal grammars and languages defined by HS, the modeling problem in classical HS, certain applied aspects of HS problems, etc. At present, the HS-problems is the well enough developed independent sphere of the modern mathematical cybernetics, which has considerable field of numerous appendices.

The HS is a parallel information processing system consisting of intercommunicating identical finite automata. Although homogeneous structures (HS) are used throughout this monograph as the usual term, it should be borne in mind that cellular automata, iterative networks, systolic structures, etc. are essentially synonyms. We can interpret HS as a theoretical base of artificial parallel information processing systems. From the logical standpoint HS is an infinite automaton with characteristic internal structure. The HS theory can be considered as structural and dynamical theory of the infinite automata. HS can be considered as the basis for modeling of many discrete processes and they present interesting enough independent objects for investigations as well. In recent years has arisen undoubted interest to the HS theory and in this direction many remarkable results have been obtained. Much of this work has been activated by the growing interest in computer science and physical and mathematical modeling. At present, the HS theory forms a self-contained part of the modern mathematical cybernetics.

The HS-axiomatics provides such three fundamental properties as homogeneity, localness and parallelism of functioning. If in a similar computing model we shall with each elementary automaton associate a separate microprocessor then it is possible to unrestrictedly increase the sizes of such computing system without any essential increase of temporal and constructive expenses, required for each new expansion of the computing space, and also without any overheads connected to coordination of functioning of an arbitrary supplementary quantity of elementary microprocessors. Similar high-parallel computing models admit practical realizations consisting of rather large number of rather elementary microprocessors which are limited not so much by certain architectural reasons as by a lot of especially economic and technologic reasons defined by a modern level of development of microelectronic technology, however with the great potentialities in the future, first of all, in light of rather intensive works in field of nanotechnology. ... Product Description
Collective systems, abounding in nature, have evolved by natural selection to exhibit striking problem-solving capacities. Employing simple yet versatile parallel cellular models, coupled with evolutionary computation techniques, this volume explores the issue of constructing man-made systems that exhibit characteristics like those occuring in nature. Parallel cellular machines hold potential both scientifically, as vehicles for studying phenomena of interest in areas such as complex adaptive systems and artificial life, and practically, enabling the construction of novel systems, endowed with evolutionary, reproductive, regenerative, and learning capabilities. This volume examines the behavior of such machines, the complex computation they exhibit, and the application of artificial evolution to attain such systems. ... Read more
