Excerpt: A cellular automaton (pl. cellular automata, abbrev. CA) is a discrete model studied in computability theory, mathematics, physics, complexity science, theoretical biology and microstructure modeling. It consists of a regular grid of cells, each in one of a finite number of states, such as "On" and "Off" (in contrast to a coupled map lattice). The grid can be in any finite number of dimensions. For each cell, a set of cells called its neighborhood (usually including the cell itself) is defined relative to the specified cell. For example, the neighborhood of a cell might be defined as the set of cells a distance of 2 or less from the cell. An initial state (time t=0) is selected by assigning a state for each cell. A new generation is created (advancing t by 1), according to some fixed rule (generally, a mathematical function) that determines the new state of each cell in terms of the current state of the cell and the states of the cells in its neighborhood. For example...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=54342 ... Read more

I was extremely disappointed with this book. I spent $40 (including shipping) for a printed compilation of Wikipedia articles. Literally. Each article has the Wikipedia link after it that it came from. In the book description it slyly eludes to this: "free access to book updates online". Yeah, by looking up Wikipedia - a FREE website. I really wish I could get my money back. Don't buy this. It's a total waste of your money and probably some sort of copyright infringement on the publishers' part by monetarily benefitting from Wikipedia. ... Read more

Description:
It has long been accepted that word-of-mouth (w-o-m) communications play a key role in new product adoption and much interest has been directed to the positive impact of interpersonal communications on new product dissemination and adoption. Limited attention, however, has been given to the adverse effect of negative w-o-m and consumers' resistance to change, primarily since these negative forces are less visible, leaving no traces in sales data. In this paper, we explore how resistance may shrink market size. In light of the covert nature of negative w-o-m, we use cellular automata modeling to simulate and gain insights into possible resistance scenarios and their implications. We found that, once resistance is enrolled, advertising provides no more than a limited compensating effect, and positive opinion leaders have only low impact on market growth. In a second study, we explore an approach that undermines the effect of resistance leaders through the direct activation of positive opinion leaders prior to the initiation of unfocused marketing efforts. ... Product Description
In the monograph we present certain results of the work we have done in mathematical theory of the classical homogeneous structures (HS; English synonym "Cellular Automata (CA)") during 1968-2008. These results form the essential enough part of the HS problems. In particular, we have considered such problems as problem of nonconstructibility, decomposition of global transition functions, extremal constructive opportunities, complexity of finite configurations, parallel formal grammars and languages defined by HS, problem of modeling in classical HS, certain applied aspects of the HS problems, etc. At present, the HS problems is the well enough developed independent sphere of the modern mathematical cybernetics, which has considerable field of numerous applications.

The HS is a parallel information processing system consisting of intercommunicating identical finite automata. Although homogeneous structures (HS) are used throughout this monograph as the usual term, it should be borne in mind that cellular automata, iterative networks, systolic structures, etc. are essentially synonyms. We can interpret HS as a theoretical framework of artificial parallel information processing systems. From the logical point of view the HS is an infinite automaton with characteristic internal structure. The HS theory can be considered as structural and dynamical theory of the infinite automata. HS can be considered as the basis for modeling of many discrete processes and they present interesting enough independent objects for investigations as well. In recent years has arisen undoubted interest to the HS theory and in this direction many remarkable results have been obtained. Much of this work has been activated by the growing interest in computer science and mathematical modeling. At present, the HS theory forms an original part of the modern mathematical cybernetics. ... Read more

A polynomial trend line demonstrates the quadratic growth rate. In Conway's Game of Life , a breeder is a pattern that exhibits quadratic growth , by generating multiple copies of a secondary pattern, each of which then generates multiple copies of a tertiary pattern. Classification Breeders can be classed by the relative motion of the patterns. The four basic types are: A spacefiller (which also undergoes quadratic growth) may be thought of as a fifth class of breeder. However it differs from a true breeder in that it expands a single island of cells, rather than creating independent objects. In a cellular automaton , a Garden of Eden configuration is a configuration which cannot appear on the lattice after one time step, no matter what the initial configuration. In other words, these are the configurations with no predecessors. They resemble the concept of the Garden of Eden in Abrahamic religions, which was created out of nowhere, hence the name. According to Moore (1962), this name was coined by John Tukey in the 1950s. A Garden of Eden is a configuration of the whole lattice (usually one- or two-dimensional infinite square lattice). Each Garde... ... Read more

Excerpt:Bloom Bloom , written in 1998, is the fifth science fiction novel written by Wil McCarthy . It was first released as a hardcover in September 1998. Almost a year later, in August 1999, its first mass market edition came out. Bloom is one of Borders' "Best 10 Books of 1998" and is a New York Times Notable Book. The premise of the book is how to handle human technology that has evolved beyond human control. Plot summary Bloom is set in the year 2106, in a world where self-replicating nanomachines called "Mycora" have consumed Earth and other planets of the inner solar system, forcing humankind to eke out a bleak living in the asteroids and Galilean moons . Two groups of humanity exist--The Immunity which use "ladderdown " technology and augmented reality and lives on the moons of Jupiter, and The Gladholders which use human intelligence amplification and artificial intelligence and live in the asteroid belt. The story begins on Ganymede with an article about a "bloom", or outbreak of Mycora, that serves to emphasize the danger and horror of this technogenic life (TGL). The author of said story, Strasheim, is also the main character. He is first seen in the office of Lottick, a major public figure, who has called him there for an unknown purpose. Lottick tells Strasheim that the Mycora have apparently been stealing human gene sequences and may develop resistance to the coldness of the outer system, which incites concern. In the short term, a mission to drop some TGL detectors onto Mars' and the Earth's polar icecaps has been approved and Lottick asks Strasheim to go along as a rep... ... Read more

Description:
Rapid advances in computer and geospatial technology have made it increasingly possible to design and develop urban models to efficiently simulate spatial growth patterns. An approach commonly used in geography and urban growth modelling is based on cellular automata theory and the GIS framework. However, the behaviour of cellular automaton (CA) models is affected by uncertainties arising from the interaction between model elements, structures, and the quality of data sources used as model input. The uncertainty of CA models has not been sufficiently addressed in the research literature. The objective of this study is to analyze the behaviour of a GIS-based CA urban growth model using sensitivity analysis (SA). The proposed SA approach has both qualitative and quantitative components. These components were operationalized using the cross-tabulation map, KAPPA index with coincidence matrices, and spatial metrics. The research focus was on the impacts of CA neighbourhood size and type on the model outcomes. A total of 432 simulations were generated and the results suggest that CA neighbourhood size and type configurations have a significant influence on the CA model output. This study provides insights about the limitations of CA model behaviour and contributes to enhancing existing spatial urban growth modelling procedures. ... Read more

Product Description
In Conway's Game of Life (and related cellular automata), the speed of light is a propagation rate across the grid of exactly one step (either horizontally, vertically or diagonally) per generation. In a single generation, a cell can only influence its nearest neighbours, and so the speed of light (by analogy with the speed of light in physics) is the maximum rate at which information can propagate. It is therefore an upper bound to the speed at which any pattern can move. ... Read more

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! In cellular automata, a methuselah is a small "seed" pattern of initial live cells that take a large number of generations in order to stabilize. More specifically, Martin Gardner defines them as patterns of fewer than ten live cells which take longer than 50 generations to stabilize, although some patterns that are larger than ten cells have also been called methuselahs. Patterns must eventually stabilize to be considered methuselahs. The term comes from the Biblical Methuselah, who lived for 969 years, before he eventually died. ... Read more

Description:
Grassland degradation has become a serious environmental problem in China due to climate variability and human disturbances in the arid and semi-arid areas. Establishing grassland protection areas (GPAs) is regarded as an effective measure to protect grassland. This paper presents a new method to support the local government's effort in zoning of GPAs. It integrates a cellular automata (CA) model with geographical information system (GIS) and remote sensing. The proposed method includes two major steps: 1. to extract ''seed points'' of candidate GPAs using remote sensing techniques and GIS; 2. to simulate the zoning of GPAs using a CA model. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated using a case study in Xilingol steppe grassland in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region of China. The results show that the integrated approach can rapidly find candidate GPAs that satisfy the zoning requirement. It has demonstrated that the proposed method of grassland protection zoning provides valuable decision support tools for government and planning agencies. ... Read more

Description:
Spatial models of urban growth have the ability to play an important role in the planning process; if not in aiding in policy decisions, then in processes such as visioning, storytelling, and scenario evaluation. One question that has not adequately been addressed is to what degree does disaggregating land use types from urban/non-urban categories add to these simulations? This paper aims to answer this question by modeling urbanization in San Joaquin County (CA) using the SLEUTH urban growth model with two equal, but different datasets; one with urban/non-urban data, and the other with the same data, but the non-urban data disaggregated in nine land uses. The results show that there is an explicit link between the likelihood of urbanization, and the type of land use that will be converted to urban, and suggest that future exercises using spatial models should not ignore the impact of aggregating individual land use categories into urban-non-urban classes. ... Description:
Forest remnants are vital for the overall heterogeneity and health of rural landscapes. However, deforestation is a significant process afflicting large numbers of agroforested regions of the world. The Maskoutains regional county municipality (RCM) in southern Quebec, Canada, experiences intense deforestation that has reached critical levels. The goal of this study is to develop a geographic cellular automata (GCA) to model land-use change in this region and test the influence of different management scenarios on the fate of the forested remnants. The GCA was built using a 100m cell size, a Moore neighborhood configuration, a 3 years time step resolution and probabilistic transition rules derived from the comparison of two land-use maps for the years 1999 and 2002. Four groups of management scenarios were tested: (1) status quo (SQ), (2) reduced deforestation (RD), (3) promotion of ligniculture (L), and (4) protection of forest connectivity (CONN). Results indicate that none of the scenarios succeed in maintaining the actual levels of forest area. However, certain scenarios (amongst the RD and CONN), significantly alter the loss of forest areas in the short to mid-term and delay the fragmentation, reduction, and isolation of forest patches. ...
