Extractions: England, Rome and Constantinople by Vladimir Moss Part I: 787 to 865 The year 787 marks a critical turning-point in the history of the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. In that year, at the Seventh Oecumenical Council in Nicaea, hierarchs representing the Church in both East and West condemned the heresy of iconoclasm, upheld that age-old tradition of the veneration of ikons, and in its Synodikon, which is still read on the First Sunday of the Great Fast throughout the Orthodox Church, anathematised every heresy and innovation in general terms: "All that was innovated and enacted, or that in the future shall be enacted, outside of Church tradition and the teaching and institution of the holy and ever-memorable Fathers, Anathema (thrice)."[4] In 792 the Frankish King Charlemagne sent a Latin translation of the acts of the Seventh Oecumenical Council to the kings and bishops of Britain. Unfortunately the translation seems to have confused the difference between the Greek work latreia (the worship or adoration ascribed to God alone) and proskynesis (the relative worship or veneration ascribed to the saints and the holy ikons). It was therefore supposed that the Fathers of the Seventh Council had asserted, in the words of Symeon of Durham, "that ikons are to be adored, which is altogether condemned by the Church of God"; and the reader Alcuin brought back the negative opinion of the British Church.[7]

They go their own way, pursue their happiness, and share what they discover. I once embarrassed local book-binder Betty Storz, naming her a "local treasure," and now I'm going to embarrass Mendocino artists Joyce and Dorsey Alexander with the same designation, only plural. The occasion for this round of embarrassing praise is the publication of Dorsey Alexander's latest hand-made book, titled Fiery Letters for short, and The Fiery Letters that Cadmus Sowed in Greece for long. The book is available in a numbered edition of 200. It runs to only 18 pages, is hand-sewn and assembled, printed on beautiful papers in shades of taupe, orange and brilliant white, and features the ideas and calligraphy of Dorsey and the woodcuts of his wife, Joyce Alexander. Fiery Letters is a short book that distills a lifetime of study and observation about letters and their meaning. It is about half the length of a typical children's picture book, and like a children's book it's easy to read. Big ideas are distilled to their essence or simply suggested, or, should I say, suggested simply. Dorsey writes, "Words are by far the most powerful force man has discovered. They are pure idea and being idea have the creative force to bring new things into existence. Spoken words die on the air waves even if, as Emerson suggests, they resound through the universe."

Extractions: Press information: Dr Catherine Cubitt, Centre for Medieval Studies tel: 01904 433947 31 May 2001 York is often associated historically with the Vikings, but before the Vikings arrived York was a prominent international centre with trade links across Europe and a religious and intellectual culture second to none. It is this golden age, exemplified by the eminent scholar and teacher Alcuin, which is celebrated in a series of public lectures organised by the University of York, and by an Exhibition at the Yorkshire Museum. Alcuin was born around 740 AD. His family owned land near Spurn Point and he was educated from an early age at the Cathedral School in York, one of the most distinguished centres of learning of its day in Europe (direct descendants of this school are St Peter's School and the Minster School). Alcuin went on to become head of the school and became not only a major figure in York but on the Continent as well. He was 'head-hunted' by Charlemagne, King of the Franks and later Holy Roman Emperor, and lived the rest of his life on the Continent in Francia. He became a close adviser to the Emperor but maintained regular and warm contact with his friends in York, writing a poem in praise of his native city. The University's public lecture series focuses on the Alcuin and Charlemagne Exhibition currently taking place at the Yorkshire Museum. The Exhibition contains unique and fascinating objects from York, its environs and the Continent, placing Alcuin in his York and Northumbrian context as well as reaching out to his Continental connections.

Ethelbert, in his search for books, travelled far, and we know that he visited Rome among other places. Everywhere his learning and power of sympathy won for him friends, so that his influence for good was widespread and he ranks as one of the foremost among the promoters of education in the eighth century. In 766 Archbishop Egbert died, and Ethelbert was unanimously chosen to succeed him. He was consecrated 24 April, 767, and received the pallium from Adrian I in 773. As archbishop he continued his simple and laborious life, working with such success that he is regarded as one of the founders of the Church of York. He set himself to rebuild the minster which had been destroyed by fire in 741. It is impossible to obtain certain information as to the extent of his work, but Alcuin speaks as though he began, finished, and consecrated it: He speaks of its magnificence, the columns and crypts, bright windows and ceilings, the tall crucifix of precious metals, the thirty altars it contained, and the gold, silver, and jewels employed in the decoration of sacred vessels and altars. Eanbald and Alcuin were employed by the archbishop to superintend its construction. From York Ethelbert developed both missionary work and educational effort. He sent out from his school both preachers and teachers, the latter of whom founded new schools while the former spread the truths of
