My Grandparents and father worked the same farm in Guelph Township(named Couden Knowes by William). My family does not live far from their memorial stone in Guelph Township. My Grandmother had begun an extensive family tree many years ago that began with William's arrival in Canada. Today the fragmented medieval ruin of Berwick castle beside the Victorian train station and Royal border bridge is a shell of it's former glory, originally a great Scottish fortress fought over by the Scots and the English for centuries. If it's stones could talk what tales they could tell invasions, massacres, wars, hostage taking and the like. In 1296 King Edward I of England, the "Hammer of the Scots" invaded Scotland besieging Berwick castle and it's town "walls" (actually a wooden palisade). Edward and his army entered the town by surprise spending three days ruthlessly killing almost the entire civilian population. While the castle's garrison led by William "the hardy" Douglas could do nothing in their defence. Sadly this slaughter of innocent civilians is not confined to the pages of the past but has been repeated again and again throughout history. Even in the recent Balkans conflict some 700 years after the Berwick massacre. Edward eventually ended the carnage on seeing a pregnant woman giving birth being hacked to death by his men.

Tales of the vampire and werewolf are not strictly confined to mid-Europe. The North East, too, can produce similar gory and chilling tales from darker periods in its history and the Vampire of Berwick is a case in point. The story was first told by William, a highly respected Canon of the Priory of Black Monks, near Coxwold, East Yorkshire. Writing about the time of Richard I, he relates several stories of men who rose from the grave to wander abroad and scare the simple peasantry of the North. At Berwick it all began when a rich townsman fell ill. By all accounts, few lamented his death, for he was a rogue who had already been excommunicated from the Church. He was consequently refused a Christian burial in consecrated ground.... The Berwick of Richard I was, of course, a much different town to that of today, and the surrounding countryside might well have resembled the Black Forest of Germany, where so many other vampire and werewolf tales originate. It was well-wooded country and the chase was pursued with vigour. So popular was it that William I once depopulated 30 miles of countryside to ensure that game was kept for the royal pot. Both Malcolm IV and William the Lion exacted heavy penalties from anyone found hunting in the countryside surrounding the old town.

On the first of December Alexander's sentence of excommunication was cancelled by the Pope and the King received absolution in the Castle at Berwick. Alexander II dated three Charters in Berwick upon Tweed.
