Extractions: in win over Penn St. March 10, 1999 SAN ANTONIO, Texas Junior lefthander Tim Kalita rebounded from a rocky start and the new-look Notre Dame batting error made a noticeable difference, as the Irish evened their record (6-6) with a 6-3 win over Penn State in first-day action of the fifth annual Irish Baseball Classic, at Wolff Municipal Stadium. Penn State (4-5) claimed a 2-0 lead in the first inning, behind RBI doubles from Dan Beers and Chris Netwall, but the Irish answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Senior righthander Dan Goebeler (2-2) took the loss, allowing six runs (five of them earned) on seven hits and four walks over seven innings, with three strikeouts. Kalita (1-1), who had no decision in Saturday's 6-5 loss to PSU, racked up 10 strikeouts (equaling his career-best) while logging eight innings for the second-longest outing of his career. He allowed three runs on five hits, two walks and one hit batter. Kalita at one point had retired 20 of his previous 21 batters faced before yielding his first walk of the game, in the eighth inning.

Extractions: 216-283-4061 (eve) CLEVELAND, September 27 - Dr. Anne L. Deming, President of Notre Dame College since August of 1996, today announced her intention to retire at the close of her current contract on June 30, 2003. "By next June," Dr. Deming said in a letter to the Notre Dame College community, "I will have served seven years as president and I believe the time will be right for the College to benefit from the ideas and insight of a new president. My successor will come to the College during a period of sustained optimism and growth. And I, in turn, will benefit from the chance to write, and to spend extended time with Bob and our children and grandchildren, who are scattered from San Francisco to London. I look forward to a brief sabbatical and then time to explore other professional opportunities." Dr. Deming's tenure is marked by a dramatic increase in enrollment and retention, an expansion of the College's mission to include men and international students, an exponential increase in alumnae giving, and the launching of the most ambitious fundraising campaign in the College's history.

Extractions: Mathematician Report Index Below is a list of mathematicians. You may choose from this list or report on a mathematician not listed here. In either case, you must discuss with me the mathematician you have chosen prior to starting your report. No two students may write a report on the same mathematician. I would advise you to go to the library before choosing your topic as there might not be much information on the mathematician you have chosen. Also, you should determine the topic early in the term so that you can "lock-in" your report topic!! The report must include: 1. The name of the mathematician. 2. The years the mathematician was alive. 3. A biography. 4. The mathematician's major contribution(s) to mathematics and an explanation of the importance. 5. A historical perspective during the time the mathematician was alive.
