Extractions: Mathematician Report Index Below is a list of mathematicians. You may choose from this list or report on a mathematician not listed here. In either case, you must discuss with me the mathematician you have chosen prior to starting your report. No two students may write a report on the same mathematician. I would advise you to go to the library before choosing your topic as there might not be much information on the mathematician you have chosen. Also, you should determine the topic early in the term so that you can "lock-in" your report topic!! The report must include: 1. The name of the mathematician. 2. The years the mathematician was alive. 3. A biography. 4. The mathematician's major contribution(s) to mathematics and an explanation of the importance. 5. A historical perspective during the time the mathematician was alive.
V. edited by James G. Huard (Canisius College) and Kenneth S. Williams(Carleton University). THE COLLECTED PAPERS OF sarvadaman chowla. http://www.yurinsha.com/354/p7.htm
Extractions: New and striking results obtained in recent years from an intensive study of asymptotic combinatorics have led to a new, higher level of understanding of related problems: the theory of integrable systems, the Riemann-Hilbert problem, asymptotic representation theory, spectra of random matrices, combinatorics of Young diagrams and permutations, and even some aspects of quantum field theory. Tensor Analysis and Nonlinear Tensor Functions embraces the basic fields of tensor calculus: tensor algebra, tensor analysis, tensor description of curves and surfaces, tensor integral calculus, the basis of tensor calculus in Riemannian spaces and affinely connected spaces, - which are used in mechanics and electrodynamics of continua, crystallophysics, quantum chemistry etc. The book suggests a new approach to definition of a tensor in space 3, which allows us to show a geometric representation of a tensor and operations on tensors. Based on this approach, the author gives a mathematically rigorous definition of a tensor as an individual object in arbitrary linear, Riemannian and other spaces for the first time.

Extractions: The Final Regional Workshop for the World Bank study on Cleaner Transportation Fuels for Air Quality Improvement in Central Asia and the Caucasus was held in Baku, Azerbaijan, Oct. 26-27. Prof. Deniz Karman , from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, made two presentations on behalf of Environment Canada, on the topics of motor vehicle fuel demand, trends, emissions, and inspection/maintenance programs in the region, summarizing the findings of the study over the last year and a half. Karman had been invited to join the Environment Canada team undertaking the Vehicle Fleet Analysis part of the study, visiting Georgia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan in the summer of 1999. Countries participating in the workshop passed a resolution for phasing out lead in gasoline, harmonizing fuel quality, and undertaking measures to improve air quality in the region by 2005.
