It is traditionally played with toothpicks, but can be played with pebbles, scraps of paper, or any kind of marking piece. At each turn, a player may remove any number of toothpicks from exactly one row. The player that starts, for example, can remove one, two, or three toothpicks from the row with three toothpicks, either or both toothpicks from the row with two toothpicks, or the single toothpick that sits alone in a row by itself. The player who removes the last toothpick looses. Play the game a few times and see if you can figure out the strategy that will always let you win. Mathematician John Conway has long been fascinated by these games, and wrote the book On Numbers and Games (New York: Academic Press, Inc. 1976) to show the relationship between these games and theories of transfinite numbers. John became interested in mathematics at a very early age and his mother recalled that he could recite the powers of two when aged four years. John's young years were difficult for he grew up in Britain at a time of wartime shortages. At primary school John was outstanding and he topped almost every class. Despite not having any clear idea of what mathematics was when he was at primary school, John Conway must have had it firmly fixed in his mind that he would become a mathematician. When he went to be interviewed at age eleven before entering secondary school he was asked what he wanted to be when he grew up and he replied that he wanted to be a mathematician at Cambridge. He excelled at secondary school, not in all his subjects but certainly his performance in mathematics was by far the best of any of the pupils. Mathematics was not the only subject which interested him, however, for he also had spells of deep interest in astronomy and at other times in fossils. The interest in astronomy has remained with him and he lists it as one of his interests today. After leaving seconday school, Conway entered Gonville and Caius College Cambridge to study mathematics. He was awarded his BA in 1959 and began to undertake research in

John Conway died, May 3, 1801, in Campbell County, Kentucky. John Conway married Elizabeth Bridgewater about 1750-52. Elizabeth was born about 1735 and died July 30, 1809. She was a native Virginian of English parentage. Due to his teaching profession, John Conway established several homes in Virginia. War and pension records of their four sons, indicate that each of them was born, or enlisted for military service in a different Virginia County. John and Elizabeth had ten children: Drusilla Conway (B. June 11, 1753), daughter of John and Elizabeth Conway, married a Mr. Long. They had a daughter named Rhoda Long. Mary Conway (B. January 14, 1755), daughter of John and Elizabeth Conway, married John Daugherty. Samuel Conway (B. October 23, 1756, D. September 17, 1830), son of John and Elizabeth Conway, served the Revolution by manufacturing gun powder for the army. His first wife was Elizabeth Clemons. His second wife was a Mrs. Margery Miller. Samuel died in Marion County, Missouri.

Extractions: Archives: Finding Aid Conway, John S., 1852-1925. Papers, 1852-1925. Milwaukee Manuscript Collection 110 and Milwaukee Micro Collection 54 1.2 cubic ft. (3 archives boxes) + 1 microfilm reel (35 mm) ABSTRACT: Papers, mainly 1855-1936, of a prominent artist who resided in Milwaukee during the 1870s and whose largest work was the Milwaukee Soldiers Monument completed in 1898. Included are correspondence concerning his training and experiences in Europe during the 1880s and 1890s, a diary and address book, miscellaneous writings, draft articles on art in Milwaukee (available only on microfilm), photographs, and material concerning the Soldiers Monument. Although there are letters to and from family and friends, the majority of the correspondence consists of exchanges with his friend and patron, Milwaukee artist Lydia Ely (Lydia Ely Hewitt). Also among her papers are original letters to her from Fanny Burling Buttrick, James MacAlister, and others concerning the Wisconsin Soldiers Home and the Milwaukee Industrial Exposition. One folder of correspondence from Grace Robinson Conway concerns the disposition of her large collection of Conway paintings. Because of the sustained, close relationship between Conway and Ely the collection, although small, provides good documentation about the kind of man Conway was as both an artist and an individual and some of the significant events in his life. The Conway-Ely correspondence is most complete for the years 1881-1885 when Conway was in Europe. There are some gaps in the coverage for the full duration of their friendship, and it may be that they were visiting or traveling together during these periods.

Conway was educated at the University of Cambridge, and taught at Cambridge as a mathematical logician upon graduation. He remained at Cambridge for many years before joining the Princeton faculty in 1986. At Princeton, he is currently John von Neumann Distinguished Professor of Mathematics), and remains an honorary fellow of Gonville and Caius College. Conway is the author or co-author of at least ten books, and of many expository articles which have had substantial impact not just on research mathematicians but on mathematical amateurs as well. Conway has a rare gift for naming mathematical objects, and for inventing useful mathematical notations. He is perhaps most widely known for his invention and naming of the "game of life " cellular automaton sometimes known as "Conway's game of Life."
