His legacy to the science of astronomy was mostly in more accurate mapping of the skies, rather than radical new theories. He had limited formal education, having left Derby Free School due to ill health, but he did benefit from tutoring, and his illness led to his first experience of astronomy: unable to attend school, he observed the partial solar eclipse of 12 September 1662 Flamsteed's favour with the King improved dramatically in the winter of , when a French courtier of Charles II suggested a method of calculating longitude, accurate knowledge of which is crucial for safe navigation. Flamsteed demonstrated that the theory was impractical due to the inexactitude of existing stellar measurements, which had not been refined since the time of Tycho de Brahe ( ), before the time of telescope when telescopes were not used. For a seafaring nation like England, safe navigation was crucial, and Flamsteed's proof of the stellar tables' inaccuracy was noted. Plans to establish a royal observatory, which had been semi-dormant for some time, were rapidly revived, and Flamsteed was appointed as the first astronomer royal (specifically ordered to make observations relevant to navigation), and the Greenwich Observatory was constructed. Though he was underpaid, his observatory underfunded, and the initial government enthusiasm for astronomical matters was short-lived, Flamsteed set to work making his observations. He used a new method of defining stars' positions, which radically improved accuracy. The uncertainties and errors in these measurements were smaller than those in Tycho de Brahe's (admirable) results by a factor of fifteen. The death of his mother carried a heave burden on the young man. He attended the Derby Free School, which was to have prepared him for college. At the age of 14, John developed a chronic rheumatic condition that prevented his attendance at the University. He was disappointed, however it didn't affect his study habits. Flamsteed learned astronomy on his own with little support from his father and without formal instruction. His father denied his efforts to obtain a formal education for reasons only known to him, but he kept teelling John it was because of his health. John Flamsteed showed an early talent in astronomy and his work had caught the attention among many scholars. One of his many papers was sent to the President of the Royal Academy, and caught the attention if Isaac Newton, a Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge University. This earned him a degree from Jesus College in Cambridge in 1674. Sir Jonas Moore, a patron of John Flamsteed, procured him the title of Astronomer Royal after a short visit with King Charles II. John was on the payroll of the King of England and the first Astronomer Royal. This not only paved the way for practical astronomy, but also assisted seaman with worldwide navigation. John was ordained a priest in 1675.

Flamsteed and his successors were all among Britain's most distinguished scientists. They included Edmond Halley , in office 1720-42, probably the greatest scientist of the generation after Newton James Bradley 1742-62, discoverer of optical aberration giving the first direct empirical evidence for the Copernican system; Nevil Maskelyne 1765-1811, who was the first scientist to weigh the Earth; Sir George Airy 1835-81, who personally performed most of the functions nowadays requiring a string of research councils; and Sir Frank Dyson 1910-33, who organised the observations at the 1919 solar eclipse that led to the acceptance of the modification of Newton's law of gravitation proposed by Einstein.

He was employed by King Charles II. as Britain's first Royal Astronomer on March 4, 1675, on the recommendation of Jonas Moore. The Royal Observatory at Greenwich was built for him and he began observing in 1676, but he had to fund and bring his own instruments. He was elected to the Royal Society in 1677, where he was a Member of council from 1681-4 and 1698- 1700. In 1684, he was granted living in Burstow in Surrey by Lord North. His main work was collecting improved observations and position measurements for stars, which finally led to the compilation of a large catalogue, Historia Coelestis Britannica , and an atlas of stars, Atlas Coelestis . These notes describe Richard's "Tryals about the inequality of days" which happened in 1675. Before accurate clocks were invented people relied on sundials. The accuracy of a clock was tested against the sun at noon when the sun was directly to the south. When clock-makers began making pendulum clocks, soon after 1657, they found the clocks did not keep pace with the mid-day sun. As this quotation tells, astronomers had known for a long time that the sun was an uneven timekeeper. "Here take notice, that the earth makes an entire revolution in the Ecliptic in 365 days, 5 hours, 49 minutes or thereabouts and that those days reckoned from noon to noon are of different lengths; as is known to all, that are versed in Astronomy." [Christian Huygens, 1665] (If you are not "versed in Astronomy" these notes help to explain why each day from noon to noon is not exactly 24 hours long.) Huygens knew that days varied in length from 30 seconds more than 24 hours to 22 seconds less but that over a whole year the days averaged out at 24 hours exactly. He wrote a table of the differences between an accurate clock and the sun at noon for every day of the year.
