   Ralph Fowler. It must be said that Sir Ralph Fowler was a brilliant physicist.But it may be for his influence upon others that he is best known.

   Extractions: Ralph Howard Fowler was the eldest son of Howard Fowler and Frances Eva (the daughter of George Dewhurst the Manchester cotton merchant). He was described as being quite athletic and possessing a loud, though affable, laugh. He apparently inherited his athleticism from his father who was a star at rugby and cricket. His father was an Oxford man who was called to the bar, but instead of becoming a barrister went into business. Ralph's early education was handled at home by a governess. When he was ten he matriculated at Evans' preparatory school at Horris Hill where he excelled at athletics, in particular cricket and football (soccer). At the age of 13, in 1902, Ralph won a scholarship to Winchester College placing second in the entrance examination (which apparently annoyed him despite the fact that he was sick at the time). He spent the next six years at Winchester where he became Prefect of Hall (Head of School) and won school prizes in mathematics and natural science. Once again, athletics was a major focus of Ralph's life, though despite his success at golf, he was outdone by his sister Dorothy who was a champion golfer. Ralph's academic ability was exceptional at Winchester. His classical sixth form master, Frank Carter, believed he could have been as good a classical scholar as he was a mathematical scholar. But it was mathematics that attracted him. And his ability at mathematics was matched by his affable character. At Winchester Ralph made numerous friends. Despite his penchant for speaking plainly, he always made up for it after and this seemed to have an affect on people who, both at Winchester and later, seemed to gather around him.

   Extractions: As usual, the audio portion of the mission was carried live on the 146.655 repeater and the video was carried live on the BSRG Amateur Television repeater. This signal can be received on many cable ready TVs in the Atlanta area by connecting an antenna to the place where your cable normally connects. The BSRG always retransmits the NASA Space Shuttle mission audio non-stop throughout each mission. We've been doing this since 1990. Our Shuttle audio transmissions (as well as the video feed the Big Shanty TV Repeater provides) are a memorial to Tim Mallory, AI4B. Tim and Ralph (N4NEQ) had an idea years ago to provide this service to the Amateur community. Now we proudly present it as a tribute to Tim and his love of radio!

    Extractions: I doubt that there is anyone on this SIG more mobile than I am! Yes, Peter drives all over the place, but always has his setup in his truck. He doesn't reinstall it twice a week. My tracker is moved from my personal van, to carry-on airplane luggage, to rental car, and back about once a week. It even got left on a mtn top in California as a test digipeater for a weekend (and a permanent one is going up there next week, I hope). It has flown to the Cuban border in a Cessna 337 with the Brothers To The Rescue and has also been a part of numerous special events. Components of it were even used during the 1996 Olympics. I wanted to share a few lessons I have learned. Kenwood TH-something AT (the shirt pocket wimpster). Poor choice power too low. Weird 7v power requirement. GE Century II mobile. Worked pretty well, but poor RX sensitivity. Rockbound. Not useful when traveling. Icom 2AT- Worked pretty well. Gave about 5 watts on 12 volts, power still too low for reliable tracking in and out of city. Azden PCS-4000- Old technology. LED readout a power hog. Ran van battery down all the time.
