A Giant of His Age
William Anderson Scott lives well in this biography of one of the great clergymen of the 19th century. Largely self-educated, Scott exhibits a commanding knowledge of classical literature. His writing is as powerful as his oratory. This man, born in rural Tennessee,was sought by and preached to some of the great Protestant churches in the world. He was both fearless and courageous in confronting some of the more flagrant ills of society, such as vigilantism that had a strong hold of San Francisco in the 1850's. Twice hung in effigy, he was run out of the City, only to be called back years later by some whom he had earlier alienated. His was an exciting life, capturing the attention of presidents and peasants alike. He left an indelible mark upon the development of San Francisco. Clifford Drury, historian, has captured the best of the man in this great volume. ... Read more
