Edmund Husserl's views on logic, mathematics, andsemantics have been either largely ignored or inaccurately rendered byother philosophers. In Husserl or Frege?, Hill and Haddock break newground in examining Husserl's ideas in relation to those of GeorgCantor, creator of set theory, analytic philosopher Gottlob Frege, andmathematician David Hilbert. This collection of essays offers a freshand provocative alternative to contemporary mainstream philosophy ofmathematics, and covers key areas of disagreement between Husserl, thefather of phenomenology, and Frege, the founder of analyticphilosophy. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Exposition of Platonism in Frege and Husserl
Nobody doubts the role that Frege played with philosophy of logic, math and language. However, so little is known about Husserl's role on it. Claire Ortiz Hill exposes the fact that Husserl was influenced by the mathematicians of his time. Husserl was the student and assistant of the great mathematician Karl Weiestrass, for 15 years he was the colleague and close friend of Georg Cantor, the creator of set theory. Then he spent 15 years in David Hilbert's circle in Goetingen. From 1878 to 1916, (from the ages of 19 to 57), Husserl was in contact with the greatest mathematicians of his time that neither Bertrand Russell nor Gottlob Frege, nor their followers, came much into contact.

Husserl also had a doctrine of sense and reference that is essentially platonic. He criticized severely psychologism in his "Prolegomena to Pure Logic" in his "Logical Investigations", and never stepped back from that position, contrary to what many husserlians believe. He formulated an epistemology of math and logic, in a platonist sense, a thing Frege nor any platonist ever made with much satisfaction.

Husserl provides his doctrine that states of affairs are the reference of assertive sentences, and the reference base is a situation of affairs. Using this philosophy, Guillermo Rosado Haddock proposes a platonist solution to the problem that has puzzled mathematicians and philosophers:the interderivability of seemingly unrelated statements in logic and mathematics.Rosado also brilliantly responds to of Benacerraf's, Quine's, Putnam's and Field's anti-platonist statements. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars The Frege cult
Few idols are more zealously worshipped by modern analytic philosophers than Frege. It is an article of faith for this cult that Frege "completely revolutionized the field [of philosophy of mathematics] by demolishing the naive views of his contemporaries and predecessors" (p. 15). Their attempts to justify this extravagant claim fall woefully short of their bombastic rhetoric. Let us see for example how Frege allegedly "demolished" "naive" psychologism (i.e. the idea that properties of the human mind should be central in the study of the philosophy of mathematics):

"Frege ... argued effectively against psychologism by pointing out that its conception of the laws of logic led to the absurd consequence that these laws would vary as human thought patterns underwent evolutionary changes" (p. 49).

This is plainly not an "argument" at all, let alone an "effective" one. Rather, it is simply a statement of a psychologist thesis along with the completely unsubstantiated claim that it is absurd. Only ideologues who have taken sides in advance can misconstrue this as an "argument" "demolishing" psychologism.

Equally unsubstantiated are the Fregeans' claims that history proves them right, e.g.:

"History has borne out Frege's judgement that such investigations [i.e. 'tracing the psychological origins of our mathematical notions'] are valueless to mathematics" (p. 47). "Psychologism has proved to be an unfruitful approach to logic" (p. 53). "[Psychologism] could have completely stagnated the field" (p. 17).

To dismiss e.g. Poincaré's investigation of the psychological origins of our geometrical notions as "valueless", and Brouwer's life's work as "unfruitful", and both as signs of "stagnation"---all these dogmatic statements of opinion pass for objective historical facts in the eyes of the brainwashed Frege cult. ... Il est ainsi le père de la philosophie analytique. Jules Vuillemin le fera connaître en France. His father Carl ( Karl ) Alexander Frege ( 3 Aug 1809 - 30 Nov 1866 ) was the co-founder and headmaster of a girls' high school until his death. After Carl's death the school was led by Frege's mother Auguste Wilhelmine Sophie Frege ( née Bialloblotzky ) ( 12 Jan 1815 - 14 Oct 1898 ), who apparently was of Polish extraction. In childhood, Frege encountered philosophies that would guide his future scientific career. For example, his father wrote a textbook on t...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=48416 ... Read more

Chapters: Books by Gottlob Frege, Begriffsschrift, the Foundations of Arithmetic, Function and Concept. Source: Wikipedia. Free updates online. Not illustrated. Excerpt: Begriffsschrift (German for, roughly, "concept-script") is a book on logic by Gottlob Frege, published in 1879, and the formal system set out in that book. Begriffsschrift is usually translated as concept writing or concept notation; the full title of the book identifies it as "a formula language, modelled on that of arithmetic, of pure thought." The Begriffsschrift was arguably the most important publication in logic since Aristotle founded the subject. Frege's motivation for developing his formal approach to logic resembled Leibniz's motivation for his calculus ratiocinator. Frege went on to employ his logical calculus in his research on the foundations of mathematics, carried out over the next quarter century. The calculus contains the first appearance of quantified variables, and is essentially classical bivalent second-order logic with identity, albeit presented using a highly idiosyncratic two-dimensional notation: connectives and quantifiers are written using lines connecting formulas, rather than the symbols ¬, , and in use today. For example, that judgement B materially implies judgement A, i.e. is written as . In the first chapter, Frege defines basic ideas and notation, like proposition ("judgement"), the universal quantifier ("the generality"), the conditional, negation and the "sign for identity of content" ; in the second chapter he declares nine formalized propositions as axioms. In chapter 1, §5, Frege defines the conditional as follows: "Let A and B refer to judgeable contents, then the four possibilities are: Let signify that the third of those possibilities does not obtain,...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=900125 ... Excerpt: Immanuel Kant (German pronunciation: ) (22 April 1724 12 February 1804) was an 18th-century German philosopher from the Prussian city of Königsberg. Kant was the last influential philosopher of modern Europe in the classic sequence of the theory of knowledge during the Enlightenment beginning with thinkers John Locke, George Berkeley, and David Hume. Kant created a new perspective in philosophy which had widespread influences on philosophy continuing through to the 21st century. He published important works on epistemology, as well as works relevant to religion, law, and history. One of his most prominent works is the Critique of Pure Reason, an investigation into the limitations and structure of reason itself. It encompasses an attack on traditional metaphysics and epistemology, and highlights Kant's own contribution to these areas. The other main works of his maturity are the Critique of Practical Reason, which concentrates on ethics, and the Critique of Judgment, which investigates aesthetics and teleology. Kant suggested that metaphysics can be reformed through epistemology. He suggested that by understanding the sources and limits of human knowledge we can ask fruitful metaphysical questions. He asked if an object can be known to have certain properties prior to the experience of that object. He concluded that all objects about which the mind can think must conform to its manner of thought. Therefore if the mind c...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=14631 ... Read more
