Extractions: 3500 Feet Long Taking out the Steel Phantom, which had again been voted one of the world's top five coasters, was not an easy decision. But faced with increasing competition and short of space to build a spectacular coaster elsewhere in the park, Harry Henninger decided that marketing came first. So he made the tough call. Then it became apparent to him that Kennywood could have the best of both worlds - keeping the best of the Phantom and not only improving it but attracting a wider market. The result is an even faster (82 MPH) coaster with a longer drop (228 feet). New thrills replace the loops and corkscrew of the Steel Phantom. The end product is a rebirth akin to the Thunderbolt after the Pippin. Riders must be at least 48 inches tall to ride. Experts agree however, that going on amusement park rides is one of the safest forms of recreation. The rate of death resulting from amusement park rides, according to statistics, is approximately one in 250 million riders. You are more likely to be injured playing sports, driving your car, or riding a bicycle. The National Consumer Product Safety Commission agrees. According to their statistics, more than 270 million people visit amusement parks each year. Of that number, only about 7,000 go to emergency rooms each year for injuries sustained on the rides. Considering the thousands of rides contained in American theme parks alone, this figure is remarkable. Even more shocking is the fact that the incidence of deaths over the last twenty-five years is less than half this figure. The main reason for deaths and injuries on amusement park rides is the lack of routine maintenance and the disregard of safety rules by both operators and riders. Almost every ride has safety rules, which require that riders meet a certain set of criteria relating to age, height, and weight, and warn them not to ride if they have a certain medical condition.
