J arockis vetenskapliga intresse knyter sig främst till boplatsarkeologi och den protourbana utvecklingen inom Litauens gränser. Hans forskning i nuläget rör utvecklingen av protourbana och tidiga centra i östra Balticum under perioden 800-1300. Inom ramen för "Kulturkrock och kompromiss?" så är hans forsknings område avgränsat till urbaniseringsprocesser och regionala förändringar i Semgallen 1100-1400. H an medverkar även i två andra projekt, förutom "Kulturkrock eller kompromiss?". Dessa är "Environmental and cultural history in the Baltic region" som leds av professor U. Miller vid Stockholms universitet. Och projektet "The culture of the inhabitants of Lithuania in the 11th - 17th centuries AD" lett av Dr G. Zabiella vid Insitutet för Litauens historia.

Extractions: Center for Slavic Studies Research Interests: Archaeology of Eastern Europe and the Mediterranean In addition to the study of the mesolithic-neolithic transition in the Mediterranean, Dr. Voytek continues to collaborate with the Institute of Archaeology, Prague, and the University of Sheffield within a project that deals with "Archaeological Landscape Reconstruction in Northern Bohemia." Her participation in the research has been funded by grants from the Stahl Endowment and the International Research and Exchanges Board (IREX). In the summer of 1999, Dr. Voytek was engaged in a collaborative effort with the National Museum in Szeged, Hungary. She and a colleague from the University of Genoa, Italy, spent several weeks on the analyses of the lithic assemblage from the neolithic site of Gorsza which will be published as part of the site report. Extractions: by Peter Ian Kuniholm This article was one of several companion reports that appeared together in the American Journal of Archaeology under the title "Science in Archaeology: A Review" ( AJA ). These reports were designed to bring Classical archaeologists up to speed on the latest developments in the various disciplines of archaeometry. Over 6000 years of tree-ring chronologies covering much of the period back to about 7500 B.C. have been developed over the past 20 years for the Aegean, the Balkans, and the Near East. The goal is to have an unbroken chronology from the present to the Neolithic against which archaeologists, art historians, and anthropologists may date finds of wood or charcoal with a theoretically possible precision of one year. ] Wood or charcoal samples taken from standing buildings or excavated from archaeological sites can be crossdated with each other and with wood from living trees to extend the tree-ring chronology beyond the date of the oldest ring of the oldest living tree in the region. Dendrochronology is the only archaeometric technique where determination of absolute dates accurate to the year is either theoretically or practically possible. Extractions: Summary in English By Gert Magnusson Ph D Construction of the new E22 highway between Hossmo and Söderåkra will affect a number of ancient monuments. The county administrative board has authorised the excavation of around 30 of these remains. The effect of this decision is that The County Museum of Kalmar is presently involved in the most extensive archaeological fieldwork conducted in the county since the construction of the Öland Bridge in the early 1970s The museum has produced a comprehensive project program: A road through time and space . For each ancient monument a plan of investigation has been written, describing how it is to be excavated. The project program consists of seven subprograms: The Mesolithic, The Neolithic, The Bronze Age, The Early Iron Age, The Late Iron Age and Middle Ages, Settlement Structure and Iron Production. In addition, there are three support programs: Human Geography, the Natural Landscape and DNA-studies. Important for the understanding of the cultural development are various "institutions" that can be uncovered and shown in relation to the societies in which they existed, and how they interacted with each other. Examples of these institutions are the church, a medieval manor in Hossmo, simple Iron Age dwellings or the organisation of a district in terms of settlement structure or burial grounds. Various legal rights, identifiable by physical remains in the landscape, are naturally included, such as mill embankments, fishing constructions, fields etc. With an archaeological emphasis and a cultural-historical viewpoint, we make use of the variables landscape, production, settlement and social organisation in a long-term perspective.

Extractions: Thor Heyerdahl, the late Norwegian explorer of Kon-Tiki, Ra and Tigris fame and perhaps the best-known Norwegian of the second half of the twentieth century, was the founder of the Joint Azov Archaeological Excavation project that started in 2001. That year, he assembled a team of Russian archaeologists and specialists from the Institute of Archaeology at the State University of Rostov-on-Don and the Azov Regional Museum under the leadership of Professor Sergey Lukiashko. Dr. Heyerdahl also brought a team of Western archaeologists from Norway, Sweden, and the United Kingdom, led by Dr. J Bjørnar Storfjell. Early in the planning stages for the second season of excavation, Dr. Heyerdahl had applied for a grant from the Open Russia Foundation to fund the co-operative research project. Thanks to their generous grant to the Thor Heyerdahl Research Centre, the Open Russia Foundation enabled the archaeological team to continue their investigation into the cultural history of this small city whose name appeared to be mentioned in Old Norse sagas. Many burial mounds have been excavated in Southern Russia, but only a very limited number of settlement sites. As a result of receiving funding for this project, a group of archaeologists and other specialists was able to assemble on 21 May 2002 in the far south of Russia, on the left bank of the River Don less than ten kilometres from the Azov Sea for the second time in two years.
