I cannot defend other peoples research. I know that my mother beat me to the point of unconsciousness (sporadically) over the years. My first wife, who had uncontrollable diabetes, shot me for spending three dollars out of my paycheck. My second wife stabbed me. Her court-appointed psychologist spouted all kinds of rhetoric about the innocence of women and the battered women's syndrome. We were not even getting divorced, there had never been any violence. For that matter, there had never even been many disagreements, let alone arguments. Subsequent therapy revealed that she was suffering from paranoia and acted out against me as a result of projection (wherein she projected her own noxious qualities, to me). The motivation for those women to act violently was not a result of a man's inherent violence toward women. Obviously, there were underlying complications in all of their personalities that facilitated and or created a propensity for violence. I was told by the court-appointed therapist that the violence from my second wife was my fault, because since my mother beat me and my first wife shot me, I "sought out women that were this way." While it may be true that I consciously or subconsciously sought women that had those characteristics, to have a woman's unprovoked violence to be dismissed by a "professional" as my fault, shocks the conscience. Certainly I believe in accountability and responsibility and ultimately, we all make choices that may lead us to an inevitable or expected result, but to say it is my fault is no less rational than saying that it is women's fault that they get battered.
