Erosion, volcanoes, earthquakes, and lava flows shaped the current and course of the rivers. Hundreds of thousands of years ago the Ice Age rivers of the Northwest held many times more the water volume than today's flows, and most of western Oregon was under the Pacicic Ocean. The John Day Fossil Beds display 45 to 50 million years of earth's history. Oregon is one of the most geologically diverse areas on the continent, with fossilized records dating more than 60 million years ago, including evidence of dinosaurs, saber-toothed tigers, crocodiles, bear dogs, camels, three-toed horses, and rhinos. This was a subtropical climatic setting 30 to 40 million years ago. The John Day Fossil Beds are some of the richest fossil beds in the world, thoroughly showing complete sequences of tertiary plant and animal populations. The beds were created when volcanic ash entombed plants and animals. The John Day Fossil Beds were made a National Monument in 1974 at three different places: Clarno(oldest), Painted Hills, and Sheep Rock. The beds of fossils were discovered by Reverend Thomas Condon. Crater Lake is the Deepest Lake in North America (at 1,996 feet deep).

    Extractions: The first settler in the Upper Nehalem Valley area was Clark Parker who chopped his way into the area and homesteaded in 1874. His Homestead was on the East side of the Nehalem River (Riverview). He came in from the Washington County side. He was followed in 1875 by the VanBlaricom's who homesteaded along Rock Creek in the what is now the main part of town. Other historic names in the community followed soon thereafter including, Spencer, Mellinger, Pringle, Weed and Cherrington. Vernonia was named for the daughter of one of the original settlers, Ozias Cherrington who moved there in 1876. Her name was Vernona. She was born March 30, 1868 in Ohio and later moved to Virginia. She never came to Oregon. Cherrington's co-settler, Judson Weed wanted to name the community Auburn for his home town of Auburn, Minn. The political voting precinct was called Auburn for many years, but finally renamed to Vernonia to avoid confusion. The Vernonia post office was established Jan 11, 1878 with David F. Baker as its first postmaster. The first road out of the upper valley to the North was opened with volunteer labor apparently in 1879. It reached the Nehalem Valley at

Burnside Bridge and Street is the other coordinate that separates the north from the south. In Honolulu, we usually think of Mauka and Makai, diamond or eva. We mental map our island by that. The Oregonians mental map their city with the Willamette River and Burnside Street and the direction coordinates, NW. NE. SE. SE. The Columbia River can be seen in the close distance, though it separates the state of Washington and Oregon, it is not as notable in this city where the Willamette passes right through it! I spent as afternoon by the riverside near the Hawthorne bridge. I was intrigued with the raising of the bridge. A part of the bridge can rise up like an elevator to let tall ships through. I usually think of bridges as opening up. One morning we were also stopped on that bridge, to let a ship through. What excitement!
