Extractions: Meteorological data interpretation is a challenging problem for computer science and artificial intelligence. The typical weather data sets are numerical, massive, low-level (spatially distributed temperature, pressure, wind velocity data) and are produced by number crunching supercomputers. Here is a sample data set: We are working on representations and algorithms that can extract meaningful weather features (such as cold/warm fronts and their evolution) from the numerical data sets. We plan to build articulable models using these spatial-temporal features for the purposes of generating explanations and computer based tutoring. Here is a sample output of features computed using the spatial aggregation language (SAL) operators.

These have been converted to the WYEC2 format and are available as text (ASCII) that can be processed by the DOE-2 weather processor. Beyond just displaying peak design data from the 1997 ASHRAE Handbook of Fundamentals, BinMaker PLUS can convert any value into equivalent values of different units through pull-down boxes in the data viewer. For example, drybulb with mean coincident wetbulb can be converted to an enthalpy value with a single mouse-click. Likewise, moisture content in grains per lb can be converted to parts per million the same easy way. And of course, the user can select either Inch-lb or SI units.
