Extractions: Text: Abbas Kiarostami and his works have always been at one of the two extremes for Iranian critics: a phenomenon too sophisticated or too simple. In this debate, taken part by a number of Iranian critics the discussions seem to hinge around the sophisticated side. The director and his admirers go through the details of an anatomy they have thoroughly examined over and over before. Film International: First of all, let's bear in mind that we are by no men seeking your help to, sort of, interpret your film through your final solutions. We do not take a film as a cluster of knots waiting for us to undo them. Knowing your viewpoints will certainly be useful, although they will not necessarily outweigh our own attitudes. Abbas Kiarostami: I suppose, once a film is made, its creator should get detached and try to step back and look at it in a way just like any other spectator sees it. This might not be quite possible for him to adopt a totally objective attitude, though, due to his own presumptions and persistent memories. Therefore, I will give myself no more right to judge than anyone of you. I recently happened to watch my The Traveler again after 20 years. I think I could only now judge that film, having forgotten much of my memories and got rid of my worries for its ranking at competitions. As for f new work, the filmmaker's comments are less important and valid than those of simple movie fans.

Extractions: Text: Those who know Abbas Kiarostami also know his sunglasses. When he appears in public, his eyes stay hidden behind those dark glasses. He is said to have delicate eyes. On the screen, Abbas Kiarostami lends us a view of the people, whose lives pass before the lens of his film camera, as sensitive as film material. In the role of the scenarist he takes off his glasses. In his documentary, Homework, completed in 1989, Abbas Kiarostami can be seen playing a film director. He is interviewing pupils about their lives between school and their home, about their pleasures and their sorrows. During the interviews, Abbas Kiarostami is wearing his sunglasses. "In 'Homework' I made a mistake. I didn't take off my dark sunglasses," he admits today. "Had there been a director on the other side of the camera, he would certainly have told me to take off my sunglasses." "A pair of glasses limits the view. The frame of the glasses frames the view and allows the viewer to recognize only a slice of life. Moreover a pair of sunglasses makes this slice of life appear in a dark light which may easily entail the viewer to overlook the details hidden in the shadow. "Children are not likely to tell the truth in front of a camera, but rather something to please the adults. The children have learned what they must say to avoid the danger." Wearing his sunglasses. Kiarostami makes us understand that this kind of interview can only result in filtered truth.

This question dealing with the power of movies is at the base of many debates in film culture, including those related to "positive images" and how film functions in education. Close-Up , a film on the Facets Video Label, offers a provocative case study of the power of movies in ingenious cinematic form. The simple story of Close-Up is this: One day while riding the bus, a woman sits down next to a man who identifies himself as the filmmaker Mohsen Makhmalbaf. Ms. Ahankhah is surprised that such a famous filmmaker would take public transportation, and suspiciously questions him. But the man's answers are earnest and plausible. Soon she introduces him to her family. They are flattered as "Makhmalbaf" develops a film featuring them, and try to accommodate his every wish. Soon, however, they become suspicious. Ultimately they have the impostor, revealed to be a poor obsessed cinephile named Sabzian, arrested and tried for fraud. Abbas Kiarostami, another well-known filmmaker, learns about the case from a newspaper report and films the trial. Kiarostami then follows Sabzian as he tries to make amends.

Extractions: Clcik Here to see a clip from this movie! Winner of the top prize at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival, Taste of Cherry is an existential fable of weight and clarity from director Abbas Kiarostami. An Iranian man, Mr. Badi, is determined to commit suicide at nightfall, but seeks a living assistant to check his hand-dug grave the following morning. If Badi is dead, the person will fill the grave with dirt; if not, he will help Badi out of the hole - in either event receiving a handsome reward for the task. Badi scours the hills outside Tehran in his Range Rover, explaining the proposition to his passengers one by one. The candidates among them a soldier, a seminarian and a taxidermist - react differently to Badi's strange, forbidden request. Each lends new perspective on what it is that makes life worth living. "The Best Film Of The Year."
Taste Of Kiarostami abbas kiarostami deserves more credit than any other single director for fuelingthe recent rise of Iranian cinema, arguably the most dramatic film development http://www.sensesofcinema.com/contents/00/9/kiarostami.html
Extractions: Abbas Kiarostami David Sterritt is film critic of The Christian Science Monitor, chairman of the New York Film Critics Circle, Professor of Theater and Film at Long Island University, and author and editor of books on Jean-Luc Godard, Alfred Hitchcock, Robert Altman, and the Beat Generation. Abbas Kiarostami deserves more credit than any other single director for fueling the recent rise of Iranian cinema, arguably the most dramatic film development of the past dozen years. The excitement started when his slyly reflexive Close-Up (1989) reached the international circuit in the early 90s, and crested when his extraordinary Taste of Cherry (1997) shared the Palme dOr at Cannes in 1997. While a handful of his Iranian colleagues have also achieved a fair share of Western recognitionincluding Mohsen Makhmalbaf and Jafar Panahi, both of whom have collaborated with himhe has remained the most highly visible figure, thanks to films like the so-called Koker trilogy ( Where Is the Friends Home And Life Goes On Through the Olive Trees [1994]) that have earned ecstatic reviews and drawn enthusiastic art-house audiences in Europe and the United States.

Extractions: Ten Links Abbas Kiarostami is the leading Iranian director of the generation that stormed the West in the 1990s. Khaneh-Je Doost Kojast/ Where is my Friend's House (1987) is a fairy tale about a child's drama consumed among the indifference of the adults. A world that is too consumed by mundane chores and business does not see and cannot share the emotions of a simple and noble soul. Kiarostami's down-to-earth style is at its most eloquent in Namayeh Nazdik/ Close-Up (1989), which stands as a sort of manifesto of his art. A journalist is driving the police on a hired taxi to arrest a man who has posed as the famous director Makhmalbaf. The journalist is convinced this will be the case that makes him famous. While the driver kills time outside (close-up of a can he hit that rolls down the street), the journalist and the police enter the house and arrest the man. The journalist did not bring a tape recorder and is now desperately asking around for one. Titles. The film begins with the director, Kiarostami, interviewing the soldiers who arrested the impostor. Kiarostami is making a movie about the impostor and interviews both the family and the suspect. The family is still hurt by the fact that the director took advantage of their good manners. The impostor, on the other hand, is mainly guilty of loving cinema so much. Kiarostami asks the judge permission to film the trial. The judge is surprised that such a silly case draws the attention of a film-maker, but Kiarostami explains that this is the case of somebody who pretended to be a director and that is intriguing for a director. Kiarostami clarifies his idea of cinema when he ejects "the director is the spectator".

Offscreen thanks the festival for inviting one of the grand masters of contemporary cinema and making the following interview possible. PR: The very first film of yours that I saw was in 1992, the English title of which is And Life Goes On , and I knew from the very first shot that I was watching something totally original, perhaps unique, so, I wanted to ask a question about the way you shoot perpendicularly to the action at 90 degrees. In this first shot we are looking at a tollbooth and cars are going by, and then for the rest of the film, predominantly, we are travelling in a car and the camera is looking at 90 degrees to the landscape, the people and the houses, and I wondered about how the camera frame seems like a window on the world, but also functions like a mask, so if you could just talk a little bit about that kind of style... AK: My approach to cinema is according to the situation that exists. This is a spontaneous process and I have not thought of it in advance.
