adult education - history
An introductory reading list
This select, annotated, bibliography has been designed to give a flavour of the development of adult education. The focus here is on the UK - but material from other countries is included. This is, necessarily, a selection - so a lot has been left out. We're still working on the later sections. At the moment I have annotated the general histories and listed books dealing with different institutions. I will be annotating these over the next few months. If you have suggestions about areas or specific texts for inclusion, I'd like to hear from you.

Mishna Avot enjoins us to "make fixed times for Torah study." Jewish learning is a lifelong mitsva -
one which we take seriously at Congregation Solel. Solel has now instituted a continuing curriculum of Basic Jewish Literacy. These classes are offered on Sunday mornings during Religious School hours, so that parents and children study at the same time. We also offer a number of other study opportunities on weekdays. All of our adult education opportunities are organized within the framework of KOLEL SOLEL Solel's Institute of Adult Jewish Studies. Because we believe lifelong learning is the privilege and obligation of every Jew, we do not charge our adult members for participating in learning opportunities at Solel. African Americans and Self-Help Education: The Missing Link in Adult Education. ERIC Digest No. 222.
THIS DIGEST WAS CREATED BY ERIC, THE EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES INFORMATION CENTER. FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT ERIC, CONTACT ACCESS ERIC 1-800-LET-ERIC Recently, African-American writers in the popular press and academicians (Eric Copage, Iyanla Vanzant, Dennis Kimbro, bell hooks) have focused their attention on issues of self-help and personal growth for African American adults, as evidenced by the growth in the number of books written in the genre of self-help and African American consumers' book-buying habits (Smikle 2000). The majority of African American consumers are women in their thirties and forties with higher education, who are in the work force and/or married with families. The types of self-help books these women buy most often include books on self-esteem, gender issues, or spiritual enlightenment, as well as biographies of well-known African Americans such as Maya Angelou or Oprah Winfrey, whose lives serve as inspiring models. The purpose of this Digest is to recognize the significant role of the field of self-help education and self-help literature in the lives of African American adults and to pose the question, How can we expand the knowledge base and scope of self-help education for African Americans?
