Alabama Reading Initiative The Alabama Reading Initiative is a statewide movement anchored by educational leaders from across the state who are dedicated to significantly improving reading instruction and ultimately achieving 100% literacy among public school students.
    • In Alabama there are over 730,000 public school students in grades K-12. The Community Relations Department of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama is involved with 100 schools with a total enrollment of 59,951 students.
Since 1999, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama has supported the Alabama Reading Initiative by sponsoring schools through a dollar-for-dollar matching fund arrangement. For additional information, please visit www.alsde.edu Tutorial Program Statistics show reading as our children's weakest subject. Approximately 97,547 students in grades 3-11 scored the lowest levels on the Stanford Achievement Test. In an effort to support our schools in developing better readers, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama's Community Relations department has implemented a tutorial program to assist schools throughout the state. Our volunteers have tutored at Gresham Middle, Pelham Elementary, Brookville Elementary, Crumly Chapel Elementary and Lewis Elementary, just to name a few.

    Background Information
The Association of Teacher Educators (ATE), through its Commission on Early Childhood Teacher Education (ECTE), and the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) jointly developed these guidelines to inform decision-makers about certification standards for teachers in programs serving children from birth through eight years of age. Development of the Guidelines
Several hundred early childhood and teacher education professionals participated in developing these guidelines. The following individuals constituted the ATE Commission on Early Childhood Teacher Education and contributed to and guided the development of these guidelines: John M. Johnston, Chairperson; Doris Bergen; Sue Bredekamp; Jim Campbell; Michael D. Davis; Anne Dorsey; Stacie G. Goffin; Marcy Guddemi; Beverly Gulley; Mary Jensen; Michael Kalinowski; Joyce Munro; Steven Silvern; and Bill Dixon, ATE Executive Board Liaison.

This Web site is designed to provide basic information in all these areas, and to answer questions commonly posed to the PES office.
The College of Education offers both teacher certification programs and academic programs which do not lead to teacher certification. Students who have already earned undergraduate degrees and would like to pursue teacher certification may work with PES for either a second undergraduate degree or the non-traditional Masters Certification Program.

Purpose: The mission of the Education Department is to educate, challenge and motivate its students to become productive, professional teachers and leaders in society. The purpose of the secondary education program is (1) to prepare qualified persons for entry level positions in the public education delivery system, (2) to provide a pool of qualified students for admission to graduate training programs in selected fields of teaching. Additionally, because teacher certification is often reciprocal, ESL/BE certificationin alabama often meets the requirements of other states.
    http://esl.ua.edu/degrees.html
admission degrees people courses ... home Which graduate degree does The University of Alabama offer?
A variety of degrees are available to choose from, including the Master's of Arts (M.A.), Educational Specialist Degree (Ed.S.), Doctor of Education (Ed.D.), and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)-each with a specialization in ESL/Bilingual Education. The M.A. and Ed.S. degree programs are aligned with the State of Alabama ESL Certification requirements. What does the MA-ESL/BE teacher certification program prepare students to do? What does the doctoral program prepare students to do?
The doctoral programs in ESL/BE prepare students to become leaders in the field of ESL Education. The doctoral degrees prepare students for careers in higher education as second language acquisition specialists, researchers, and second language teacher-trainers. The doctoral degrees also prepare students for careers as ESL Consultants, Language Curriculum Specialists, and ESL Program Coordinators within school districts, state departments of education, and the U.S. Department of Education. Also, as teaching English becomes increasingly more important globally, our graduates have excellent opportunities to work internationally in diverse educational settings.

    Teacher Education Scholarship Program Application

The Alabama Space Grant Consortium funds selected programs, conferences, and seminars that promote the understanding, education, development, and utilization of space, that encourage interdisciplinary training and research in aerospace-related fields, and that train profesionals for careers in aerospace science, technology, and allied fields. Innovative methods of teaching and promoting science in the K-12 schools within the state are also encouraged through this program. Development of new curricula for science and technology may also be funded under this program. Contact your campus director or the Consortium office for submission dates. The Alabama Space Grant Consortium In 1988 Congress passed legislation that established the National Space Grant College and Fellowship Program to address scientific and technological workforce needs and the national decline in scholastic achievement, especially in math and science. There are now 52 Space Grant Consortia in all states, the district of Columbia and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico with over 500 participating institutions. They are united by the common goals of developing the educational and economic benefits of aerospace research and exploration. To this end the nation needs an increased supply of students, well-prepared individuals who are fully qualified to teach mathematics and science in our elementary and secondary schools. It is important for college students to understand that teachers are central to any effort to effect reform in science and mathematics and, for that reason, undergraduates must be encouraged to enter the teaching field.
