How to Use the Lesson Plans Descriptions of the Lesson Plans Teaching with Historic Places bibliography
Historic places have powerful and provocative stories to tell. As witnesses to the past, they recall real events that shaped history and actual people who faced those situations and issues. Places make connections across time that give them a special ability to create an empathetic understanding of what happened and why. As historian David McCullough explains, experiencing places "helps in making contact with those who were there before in other days. It's a way to find them as fellow human beings, as necessary as the digging you do in libraries." ( Brave Companions , New York: Prentice Hall Press, 1992, p. x.) It is not necessary, though, to visit a place to feel its connections and to learn its history. Through a variety of materials and activities, the Teaching with Historic Places program (TwHP) enables teachers and students to learn from places without leaving the classroom. Students can develop their own interpretation of places by examining and questioning readings, documents, maps, photographs, and by engaging in activities that help them connect these locations to the broad themes of American history. Whether visited in real life or on a "classroom field trip" provided by a lesson plan, places add substance to the themes and events covered in textbooks. Why did 18th century Spanish friars travel to, then live out their days, in isolated missions in the American Southwest? Why did children and world leaders alike flock to the doors of the modest cottage Eleanor Roosevelt chose to live in after her husband Franklin's death? TwHP lesson plans in this kit provide documents, questions, and activities that engage students in actively pursuing answers to questions like these.

African Americans have played a vital role in the history and culture of their country since its founding. An important part of the curriculum at the Institute for African American Studies is devoted to creative research on the lives and work of prominent African Americans and to placing them within their cultural context. On this page you will find brief biographical sketches of several key figures in African American history.
    Benjamin Banneker
Benjamin Banneker's Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland and Virginia Almanack and Epheremis, published during the years 1792-1797. He retired from tobacco farming to concentrate wholly upon his studies. He corresponded with Thomas Jefferson and urged Jefferson to work for the abolition of slavery.
    Sojourner Truth
Sojourner Truth, a nationally known speaker on human rights for slaves and women, was born Isabella Baumfree, a slave in Hurley, New York, and spoke only Dutch during her childhood. Sold and resold, denied her choice in husband, and treated cruelly by her masters, Truth ran away in 1826, leaving all but one of her children behind. After her freedom was bought for $25, she moved to New York City in 1829 and became a member of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. In 1853, she helped form a utopian community called "The Kingdom," at Sing Sing, New York, which was soon disbanded following the death and possible murder of its leader. Truth was implicated in the scandal but courageously fought the falsehoods aimed at her. After the death of her son, she took the name Sojourner Truth to signify her new role as traveler telling the truth about slavery. She set out on June 1, 1843, walking for miles in a northeasterly direction with 25 cents in her pocket, and rested only when she found lodging offered by either rich or poor. First she attended religious meetings, then began to hold meetings herself that would bring audience members to tears. As she logged mile after mile, her fame grew and her reputation preceded her. Truth's popularity was enhanced by her biography written by the abolitionist Olive Gilbert, with a preface written by William Lloyd Garrison. In 1864, she was invited to the White House, where President Abraham Lincoln personally received her. Later she served as a counselor for the National Freedman's Relief Association, retiring in 1875 to Battle Creek, Michigan.

Using the Newspaper to Teach 20th-Century World History
This popular curriculum guide takes students "back to the future" by using today's newspaper. It shows how World War II brought about extensive global changes, as well as changes in education, industry, and technology. This guide enhances the study of language arts and social studies by focusing on world history then and now. Presidents, Politics, and the Process This curriculum guide ties the past to the present by examining American history through the Oval Office. It captures each president's personal imprint on American history and relates the themes and events which distinguished past presidential administrations.
