You've bought your ticket and boarded the roller coaster. Now you're barreling down the track at 60 miles per hour, taking hairpin turns and completing death-defying loops. Your heart is in your throat and your stomach is somewhere near your shoes. The only thing separating you from total disaster is a safety harness...but are you really in danger? The designers of the roller coaster carefully crafted this thrilling ride to be just that, but you're actually in less danger than you think. You face a greater threat of injury playing sports or riding a bike than you do on a park ride. Amusement park rides use physics laws to simulate danger, while the rides themselves are typically very safe.

When the Thrill
is Gone Roller coasters and other amusement park “thrill” rides are in an all-out race for bragging rights as the world’s fastest, highest and scariest. With alarming and increasing frequency they are giving thrill seekers considerably more than they bargain for: whiplash, brain hemorrhages, broken limbs and ribs, paralysis, even death.

Thank you. A decade ago, roller coasters averaged 55 miles per hour. Today they average more than 70 and some approach 100 mph. They climb higher, drop more suddenly, whip and swirl more swiftly. And they inflict G forces higher than those endured by astronauts at lift-off. The “Rattler’s” story illustrates the risks amusement park patrons take. In 1990, Fiesta Texas, a San Antonio park, contracted to build the world’s highest, steepest, fastest and longest continuous wooden-span roller coaster. When the $5.7 million Rattler opened to the public a year and a half later, it did set records, but only because its design had been changed during construction to make sure it did. Combined with bad weather, those modifications caused the ride to open without adequate field testing, according to the San Antonio Express-News.

Amusement Park Rides: Risking Your Life for a Day of Fun?
Imagine you and your family and friends, enjoying a day of fun at an amusement park - can you taste that fresh cotton candy? How about all the fun you're having playing the game where you have to throw the coins into the fish bowls? You stop and think how fortunate you are to be able to share this time with your loved ones.

Your children ask if they can go on this really cool ride - a rollercoaster that whips you around at a very fast speed. Sure! you say. Your kids have to be "this tall", the sign says. No problem. You're all seated, then the motor starts and the ride begins. Up, up, and turn to the left... You begin to feel the rush of excitement - all the way down to your stomach. Everyone screams as the ride descends to the next dip in the tracks. Around you go, you're pushed into the person sitting next to you...forced to lean to the right. People scream again, including you. The track levels off, but something doesn't seem right. People are still screaming.
What's going on? Your first thought is of your family, your children. You look for your kids - they're crying. The ride comes to a stop at the gate. You step off and run toward the seats where your kids are sitting, and your heart sinks. On one turn during the ride, a child had got pushed up too far, and the lap belt didn't protect him as it was designed to. The color red was everywhere. Your children reach for you, and you give them the tightest hug ever imagined. Your family was spared from harms way, but not from the impact this tragic accident has made on their lives...it's something you will never, ever forget.

Study: Amusement park rides do not cause brain injuries
By MICHAEL RUBINKAM
ASSOCIATED PRESS PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Roller coaster enthusiasts can climb aboard without fear, according to researchers who say there is no evidence that even the fastest, tallest rides cause brain injuries. Roller coasters simply do not produce enough "head rotational acceleration" to cause either bleeding or swelling of the brain, according to researchers at the University of Pennsylvania who studied data from rides at three parks. "Looking at the absolute maximum head acceleration, we found that those numbers were nowhere near known thresholds for brain injuries," said Penn neuroscientist Dr. Douglas H. Smith, co-author of the study appearing in Wednesday's edition of the Journal of Neurotrauma. Other researchers, however, disputed the findings and said more work needs to be done. Politicians and consumer advocates have long questioned the safety of coasters, citing more than a dozen reports of brain injuries since 1979, most of them since 1990. One elderly patient died. The reports have led to state and federal legislation. On Oct. 1, New Jersey became the first state to limit the gravitational forces, or G-forces, of amusement-park rides. And U.S. Rep. Edward Markey, D-Mass., has proposed legislation that would subject roller coasters to federal oversight.

Related Resources Universal Parks Theme parks and amusement parks appeal to us on two different, almost conflicting, levels. On the one hand, we seek nostalgia, particularly at the older trolley parks, in the form of time-tested and timeworn rides. Maybe it's a chance to reconnect with our own childhood amusement park memories, which can often be quite vivid. In those cases, we find great comfort in the parks' familiar sights and sounds. On the other hand, we look to parks for the latest, greatest thrills and dazzling new technologies. 2003 will bring plenty of innovative themed attractions, thrill rides, and shows to your favorite parks. And that's a good thing. After all, today's shiny, new theme park and amusement park experiences, if they stand the test of time, will become tomorrow's patina-tinged nostalgia trip. Here are some featured attractions that will be playing at selected parks this season.

Oh no! Is it time to start thinking about going back to school already? Well, if we can't be at amusement parks or theme parks riding roller coasters, at least we can study about them in the classroom. Amusement park rides are grand examples of physics principles in action. With extreme rides more popular than ever, terms like G-forces, acceleration, and centrifugal force have seeped into our everyday lingo. Because students enjoy attractions like coasters and freefall towers, they are motivated to explore the scientific concepts that enable rides to deliver white-knuckle thrills in a safe environment. The following sites use text, photos, animation, hands-on activities, and other tools to help users understand the science behind the thrills:

Letter from Markey to CPSC regarding amusement park rides September 2, 1999 Ann Brown
Chairperson
Consumer Product Safety Commission
4330 East West Highway
Bethesda, MD 20814 Dear Chairperson Brown: In the past two weeks, an unusual number of tragedies on amusement park rides has raised concerns about whether these rides are safe. Notice to patrons of the assumed risks of these rides does not normally include the warning "THE THRILL YOU ARE ABOUT TO RECEIVE MAY BE FATAL." Yet, four tragic deaths this August in three different states highlight the real dangers surrounding the design, maintenance and operation of these rides, some of which push the limits of physical tolerance for those who are in peak condition and yet invite the patronage of a much broader spectrum of the public. The Consumer Product Safety Act charges the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) with the responsibility to protect the public against unreasonable risks of injuries and deaths associated with consumer products. Therefore, I am seeking from you some guidance concerning the regulatory environment within which these rides operate and your insights regarding the nature of the risks presented by amusement park rides, how these risks have changed over time, and the adequacy of the regulation of these risks. Some of the injuries and fatal accidents that have occurred most recently help focus attention on this matter:
  • On August 22, a 12-year-old boy fell to his death after slipping through a harness on the Drop Zone ride at Paramount’s Great America Theme Park in Santa Clara, California;

Amusement park rides, answers from CPSC September 15, 1999 The Honorable Edward J. Markey
U.S. House of Representatives
2108 Rayburn House Office Building
Washington, D.C. 20515 Dear Congressman Markey: Thank you for your letter of September 2, 1999, concerning amusement rides. I share your concern about the safety of fixed-site amusement park rides and the six deaths that have occurred on those rides this year. Regrettably, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) does not have the general statutory authority to investigate these deaths or the injuries associated with fixed-site rides. Thus, we have not determined if any of the rides are defective and are unable to obtain corrective action to address any defects. This is in stark contrast to our authority over mobile rides. I have asked the Commission's technical staff to assist me in answering many of your questions. The questions and answers are as follows: Question 1. To what extent does the CPSC have jurisdiction over the safety regulation of amusement park rides? Please provide citations and relevant statutory and report language. Section 3(a)(1) of the Consumer Product Safety Act ("CPSA") defines "consumer product" as including

Accidents Up Despite Safeguards in New, Faster Amusement Park Rides
By Dan Eggen
THE WASHINGTON POST Spurred on by customer demand and dramatic leaps in computer technology, roller coasters and other amusement park attractions are bigger, faster and louder than ever. The latest coasters scream along at nearly 100 mph. Another popular attraction drops passengers in a free fall from heights comparable to a mid-size skyscraper. And in Ohio, one theme park is building the tallest coaster in the world one that would take riders 310 feet above the surface of the Earth. But after four deaths this year aboard amusement park rides, many of those who love the new thrills also are beginning to wonder if those thrills are safe. Experts say the same technology that has improved the rides has led to major advances in rider safety, allowing computers and electronic switches to monitor speeds, locations and whether everyone is buckled in properly. Timothy Fan, a 20-year-old college student from New York, rode the Shockwave roller coaster Monday night as it climbed 95 feet before plunging its standing riders through a steep vertical loop and a sideways spiral. As his train was slowing before returning to the station, investigators said, Fan wriggled free of the safety harness, then fell accidentally to his death. Yet with the number of amusement-park injuries nearly doubling in the past five years, some experts say too many modern rides depend on riders to ensure their own safety. Recent deaths and mishaps have prompted legislators to call for tougher regulation of the amusement park industry.
