Motion Analysis
Version 1.0 for Windows Amusement Park Physics is a comprehensive collection of digitally imaged amusement park rides taken from a variety of amusement parks across the country. Ready to be used for motion analysis, the digitized video clips may be analyzed using World-in-Motion: Physics Video Analysis Software , or any analysis tool capable of working with AVI Video for Windows files. With Amusement Park Physics , students can investigate the exciting real world physics of amusement park rides. Having gathered position-time data from a number of frames in the digitized video clip, the motion of the ride can be fully studied: time, displacement, velocity, acceleration, momentum, force, and energy can all be readily measured. Students can discover the magnitude of acceleration, or “g’s”, experienced by riders; a roller coaster’s conversion of gravitational potential energy into kinetic energy; and the role of centripetal forces on the motion of rotating rides.
  • Amusement park rides from numerous amusement parks across the country, including Six Flags Magic Mountain in California, Six Flags Great America in Illinois, Valley Fair in Minnesota, and Six Flags over Texas.

85. Amusement Park Industry History
Unlike the primitive trolley parks, the Water Chutes was the first amusementpark to charge admission and use rides as its main draw rather than picnic
http://www.napha.org/history.html
THE AMUSEMENT PARK INDUSTRY
A VERY BRIEF HISTORY The roots of the amusement park industry go back to medieval Europe when pleasure gardens began to spring up on the outskirts of major European cities. These gardens were a forerunner of today's amusement parks, featuring live entertainment, fireworks, dancing, games, and even primitive amusement rides. Pleasure gardens remained extremely popular until the 1700's, when political unrest caused many of these parks to close. However, one of these parks remains: Bakken, north of Copenhagen, which opened in 1583 and now enjoys the status of the world's oldest operating amusement park. In the late 1800's , the growth of the industry shifted to America. Following the American Civil War increased urbanization gave rise to electric traction (trolley) companies. At that time, utility companies charged the trolley companies a flat fee for the use of their electricity. As a result, the transportation companies looked for a way to stimulate weekend ridership. This resulted in the amusement park. Typically built at the end of the trolley line, amusement parks initially were simple operations consisting of picnic facilities, dance halls, restaurants, games, and a few amusement rides often located on the shores of a lake or river. These parks were immediately successful and soon opened across America. The amusement park entered its golden era with the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. This World's Fair introduced the

Contact Recall About Us ... Free Consultation Amusement parks and traveling carnivals offer an exciting escape from everyday life. They also offer mechanical hazards that can, and do, hurt visitors. According to estimates by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), more than 10,000 people were treated in hospital emergency rooms for amusement ride-related injuries in 1999, an increase of 35% since 1993. The International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA) disputes those figures, and they've hired themselves a statistician to explain away the increase. What makes their quest a little awkward is that the data they've set out to discredit is the very same data that industry has been citing for years to prove how safe their rides are. The IAAPA loved that data for 20 years, until it showed a sharp increase in ride-related injuries on permanent rides. Now, suddenly, the data is deeply flawed. But only sometimes. Oddly enough, the press materials on the IAAPA's website liberally reference figures from the CPSC data.

Roller Coaster For many people, there is only one reason to go to an amusement park: the roller coaster. Some people call it the "scream machine," with good reason. The history of this ride reflects a constant search for greater and more death-defying thrills. How does a roller coaster work?
What you may not realize as you're cruising down the track at 60 miles an hour is that the coaster has no engine. The car is pulled to the top of the first hill at the beginning of the ride, but after that the coaster must complete the ride on its own. You aren't being propelled around the track by a motor or pulled by a hitch. The conversion of potential energy to kinetic energy is what drives the roller coaster, and all of the kinetic energy you need for the ride is present once the coaster descends the first hill.. Once you're underway, different types of wheels help keep the ride smooth. Running wheels guide the coaster on the track. Friction wheels control lateral motion (movement to either side of the track). A final set of wheels keeps the coaster on the track even if it's inverted. Compressed air brakes stop the car as the ride ends.

Coney Island History Site
Last Updated on August 8, 2000
This interactive educational site covers the history of Coney Island in Brooklyn, New York. It features timelines, historic articles and photographs, interactive maps that when clicked on show historic views, and lists of movies filmed on Coney Island's streets, beaches and amusement parks. Coney Island was considered the world's largest and premier amusement area during the first half of the 20th Century. It was a beach resort that provided carefree entertainment and thrilling amusement park rides to the millions of residents that lived in New York City. It featured three huge amusement parks; Luna Park, Steeplechase and Dreamland, and countless other attractions along the Bowery, Surf Avenue and its numerous side streets. The historic articles and photographs for this educational site are based on Jeffrey Stanton's research for a forthcoming history book that would concentrate on Coney Island's amusement park business during the 20th century. While others have written extensively on the area's early history and its social history, they have sadly neglected the amusement park rides and the people who designed them. Book Status: Text nearly complete with 135,000 words in seven chapters. However photos of rides and attractions are sparse and publishers aren't interested in a book with text. May have to self publish.
