Cool French Noir in Hot Op-Art Color
By KAREN DURBIN
Film Forum/Rialto Pictures Yves Montand in "Le Cercle Rouge," Jean-Pierre Melville's recently restored 1970 thriller.
he birth of the cool is a phrase that ordinarily evokes cutting-edge American phenomena like Miles Davis, Abstract Expressionism and the Beats. But in France, it could describe the casually stylish gangster movies of Jean-Pierre Melville. The director, who took his name from his favorite American novelist and died in 1973, made other notable movies, but his reputation rests on a half-dozen laconic, Zen-inflected forays into the postwar Parisian underworld. Best known in the United States are the 1955 heist picture and character study "Bob le Flambeur" (roughly translated: Bob the high roller) and "Le Samourai" (1967), starring Melville favorite Alain Delon as a drop-dead gorgeous hit man (with those looks, who needs a gun?). On Friday, "Le Cercle Rouge" (1970), which the director called "a digest of all my thrillers," will open in New York at Film Forum in a freshly subtitled print of ravishing clarity and depth-charge colors. Looking like James Dean's brunette brother, Mr. Delon plays a thief who, thanks to a tip from a crooked guard, leaves prison with an elaborate jewel robbery at the top of his to-do list. Aiding and abetting is Yves Montand, a disgraced ex-cop with legendary sharpshooting skills and a drinking problem. In the movie's most eye-popping scene, Montand wakes up hung over in a room papered in brilliant op-art stripes of teal, black and pale blue. As the d.t.'s set in, the wall cracks open and two hat-sized spiders scuttle over to the bed, followed by several brown rats, a bright green iguana and a black and cream diamond-back snake.

I'm wearing pigs on my feet!
This was a commission for Akili, a redo of an older, crappier sketch. That wacky OOC Lounge at the Lion King MUCK.
You may be wondering who all these people are, so I will list them and their species and so forth from left to right, bottom to top: Amrisha (lioness), Doodles (hamster), Yaiwa (hyena), Shaka (hyena [with chainsaw]). Stahi (panther), Yish (hyena), Krycek (AKA Ratboy, from The X-Files it's an inside joke), Neema (lioness [in a business suit]). Tenzu (adolescent lion [lifting up the wall of the lounge], Ameisa (gemsbok), Zikbalku (springbok [in closet]), Akili (lion [hanging from light fixture]), Siara (lioness), Kinamkela (striped hyena [clinging to Mousse]), Bashasha (meerkat [hugging Mousse's head]), Mousse (from Ranma 1/2 [fleeing the horror that is the lounge]).
This was a title page of sorts for my sketchbook, mostly caused by the fact that ugly eraser marks are quite easy to cover up with oil pastel.
The goat is bloo.

color wheel exercises Posted by Lola Rodríguez (200.62.60.130) on January 13, 2003 at 08:25:31: In Reply to: Re: Another view from an employed artist posted by Barry Stebbing on October 18, 2002 at 09:38:31: : In response to the second commentator: "I don't know if you are referring to our programs (How Great Thou ART Publications) when you comment that you are against students "coloring within the lines." I agree strongly with your approach and have a real aversion to coloring books, tracing, and even computer art, being that they do not enhance one's God given abilities. However, what we do in our programs is teach “color theory” with each one of our exercises. What better way to learn about the color wheel, primary colors, secondary colors, tertiary colors, complementary colors, analogous colors, etc., than by having beginning students color in certain exercises to learn this.
: Likewise, I have found with beginning students that it is very difficult to teach beginning painting because most of the students will falter in simply drawing and laying in their composition. Our success in this area has come by dividing the two: we teach drawing and painting separately. Thus, with our painting program we have students paint in an illustration that is already set before them on a "paint card". This greatly decreases their frustration yet greatly inspires them with the academics of color theory along with learning many of the basic principles of beginning painting like holding a brush, mixing colors, and how to keep a palette. We have found over the years with homeschoolers that our greatest success comes when we not only keep it very simple but also very academic.

    The language of sales
COLOR can shout, whisper, make you feel happy or sad. Color is an immediate language, faster understood than print and more memorable than a tag line. Color is a language that requires minimal translation in the world of American business, fashion and design. Color and shape are the key symbols for the American consumer. Think Coca-Cola, FedEx, Tiffany blue, Barbie pink, and America's red, white and blue. The colors, lights and sounds of a carnival are totally different than those of a hospital or high-tech business environment. Color provides basic cues and helps us simplify and sort our complex visual world. Consumers sort their world by color. We, as a human species, scan, generalize and categorize. The human eye automatically accommodates to light and dark, shape and color. The eye is a complex processing unit that reviews properties of color, relationship, regularity and texture to catalog the information. Color and logo selection requires that you get the colors right for your product, your demographic and your supplier. Color needs to be standardized from one substrate to another or the consumer will question the quality of the product. WHAT SIMPLE COLORS SAY The "common" colors, sometimes referred to as the Level 1 colorsblack, white, brown, red, pink, orange, yellow, green, blue and purplehave some properties that are useful to know as initial considerations in the selection process. For example, black makes things appear heavier, absorbs light and is high fashion. White reflects all light and is a huge trend statement for 2001 and 2002.

    Woody Guthrie Foundation and Archives
Educational Curriculum Art: Studying the Elements of COLOR Introduction
Woody Guthrie created beauty with simple lines. When he chose to use color, surprising fuschias could streak across grasses and green could blush people's faces. He embellished his writing notebooks with color, at times enriching the poetry, prose or lyrics written in black on the page, at times creating a presence of its own among the strength of Woody's words. Depending on the developmental age of the children, the use of color is often unrealistic, like Chagall or Picasso. The paintings chosen for this lesson fall into that genre. Getting Started "Man with a Hat and Scarf" evokes a smile with its jaunty placement of the hat and oppositional use of yellow and green (right hand yellow, left hand green; left scarf green, right yellow.) Children may be surprised with the way Woody used wide stroke of yellow on the face, criss-crossed by thinner streaks of green on the right half of the face. The affect is lovely and young artists may be freed to use color in creativeways. The body is not fleshed out but consists of fast, angular green with a dash of yellow.
