Techniques/Construction Techniques of stained glass window construction were described by the monk Theophilus who wrote a how to for craftsmen about 1100 AD. It describes methods little changed over 900 years: "if you want to assemble simple windows, first mark out the dimensions of their length and breadth on a wooden board, then draw scroll work or anything else that pleases you, and select colors that are to be put in. Cut the glass and fit the pieces together with the grozing iron. Enclose them with lead cames..... and solder on both sides. Surround it with a wooden frame strengthened with nails and set it up in the place where you wish."

  • Burnishing is a common technique where you layer several colors lightly and then a finial color over them to get a very smooth/solid look. I usually do it with Prismacolor Thick Lead Art Pencils, white and their clear blending pencil work well for this. Another method is to use a clear blending marker.
  • Sometimes I use Milky Gel Pens and/or white ink to add highlights over my pencils.
  • Always keep your pencils sharp while working! This is especially true with Thick Lead Art and Col-Erase Pencils. I use a hand held Panasonic electric pencil sharpener that I can carry with me no matter where I draw. It is REALLY handy and I recommend them over the plug-in kind if you plan on going anywhere to draw.
  • Do not blend with your fingers - this can cause messy fingerprints or smudging! For Col-Erase use a tissue, q-tip, cotton or a stub (AKA tortillon). For other types of pencils they should be "burnished" not blended.
  • Do not brush off your artwork with your hands!! When working with pencils little flakes of color may come off and sit on top of the paper. Brushing off with your hands may press them into the paper or streak the color. Instead tip the paper up and "tap it off" or then brush it off with a clean, dry paintbrush. Another idea is to buy a makup/blush brush - they are nice and soft and the retractable ones are easy to carry with you.

Creating an art car can be quite an undertaking. We gathered up some tips and techniques used by the best to give you a head start.
Read through these helpful hints to learn a bit about the process.
    Design Issues
  • Cars are powerful icons in our society. There are endless ways to take advantage of that... Car companies want you to buy new expensive cars. They spend loads of money trying to convince you that "you are what you drive." Oh yeah? Use this dogma to create your one-of-a-kind art car design. Consider what your goal is in creating this piece of art. If you want to be seen from a distance, use bold shapes, bright colors and wild imagery. Fluorescent colors attract quite a bit of attention. If you want people to discover your car, keep the design subtle. When deciding how you will transform you car, consider its shape, style and detailing. Some cars make great flat canvases. Others just ask to be sculpted. Spend a bit of time with your car, and get to "know it."
An artist who recognizes and works with the original shapes and lines of the cars yields an even more beautiful creation.

"A truly detailed guide to bonsai, as an art, hobby and horticultural practice."
    Bonsai...
The millennia-old art form, still going strongly today!
In Japanese, bonsai can be literally translated as 'tray planting' but since originating in Asia, so many centuries ago - it has developed into a whole new form. To begin with, the tree and the pot form a single harmonious unit where the shape, texture and colour of one, compliments the other. Then the tree must be shaped. It is not enough just to plant a tree in a pot and allow nature to take its course - the result would look nothing like a tree and would look very short-lived. Every branch and twig of a bonsai is shaped or eliminated until the chosen image is achieved. From then on, the image is maintained and improved by a constant regime of pruning and trimming. It is the art of dwarfing trees or plants and developing them into an aesthetically appealing shape by growing, pruning and training them in containers according to prescribed techniques. Overall, bonsai is a great interest, hobby or even profession to undertake. Although famous theologians have claimed that it is actually 90% art to a meager 10% of horticulture, it has to be said that a successful bonsai is most definitely a horticultural masterpiece.

coexist with traditional approaches; students explore timehonored techniques andcraftsmanship critically aware, and dedicated to their passion of art-making.
    http://kate.massart.edu/at_massart/academic_prgms/finearts3d/info.html
The structure and activities of the Fine Arts 3D department center on the world of objects and object-making. Philosophically and practically, the department reflects the contemporary art world and culture, where boundaries are dissolving: sculptors are making furniture, fiber artists are building installations. Contemporary innovations and formats coexist with traditional approaches; students explore time-honored techniques and craftsmanship along with new technologies. We expect all students in the department to become technically competent, conceptually independent, critically aware, and dedicated to their passion of art-making. Chair Joe Wood explains that "in the 3D studio experience, patterns for problem solving are cultivated. Preliminary drawings, technical practice, model making, material studies, first attempt, second attempt - these are all great problem solving skills. Successful graduates can apply these skills wherever they go." The Fine Arts 3D Department is housed in newly renovated spaces that occupy one of the college's buildings. The nearly 42,000 square feet of well-ventilated and well-maintained studios and workshops feature state-of-the-art equipment and materials. These extraordinary facilities accommodate welding, fabrication, machine tool processes, blacksmithing, foundry processes, woodworking, hot and cold glassworking, kiln firing, and more. Our faculty are working artists. Their close ties to the contemporary art world in Boston and beyond provide contacts through which students profit enormously. Students also learn about art and art-making through visits to area studios, galleries, and museums, and from visiting artists and interesting exchange programs. And as new technologies emerge, the faculty have embraced computer modeling, computer-assisted design (CAD), and computer-controlled devices as resources that are becoming more important.

    Information for Teachers General Overview
This web activity, recommended for grades 5 and up, is designed to teach both content and process.
The content areas addressed in this activity are the science of conservation and the history of the Hispanic American tradition of making santos Santos are painted woodcarvings of saints in the Catholic Church. Conservators use scientific tools and procedures such as xeroradiography and microscopy to analyze objects. The science behind these tools and procedures is explained in this web activity. What santos are, how they are made, and the importance of their stories can be also discovered. Living santero s from both the New Mexican and Puerto Rican traditions are featured and speak about their work as santero s and the importance of these objects to their cultures. An exercise on iconography enables students to understand the importance of symbols in this tradition. The process addressed is that used by a conservator as he/she learns about an object in order to care for it properly and preserve it. Conservators need to know as much as possible about how something was made, what it was made of, why it was made, and who made it. To learn this information, they often consult historians, artists, and other experts. They follow the scientific process as they form hypotheses and consult various sources of evidence to confirm or disprove their hypotheses. The application of scientific information to answer questions is also addressed in this web activity.

    Introduction
Over the past five years, many software programs have been created and many have also been improved upon. Here are four programs that, in our experience, are the ones we would recommend you consider.
Choosing Art and Graphic Design Software
Kids Pix Studio Deluxe (ages 3-12)
developed by Broderbund was the first really good general art program created for kids. With improvements made over the last couple of years, it is still one of the top programs available. It is an easy program to learn how to use and has lots of hidden sophistication to explore for the more advanced artist. It is also the one your kids may already be familiar with through it's presence in a lot of schoolroom computers. Also among all the programs we are going to mention, Kids Pix is probably the most accessible (i.e.. easy to use) for children in the 3 to 5 age range.
is also an excellent general arts program of comparable quality (some would say better) to Kids Pix Studio Deluxe. One very interesting addition you will find in this program, is an area called "the journal", where you can learn some of the fundamentals of famous art techniques such as impressionism, as well as read about famous artists. This is a nice addition, as you can look at a technique and then try it out yourself, within the program. A personal preference for several of us, also was the quality of the layout of the main art creating area.

Straus Center for Conservation and Technical Studies Training Program
Established in 1928 by Edward W. Forbes and located in the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University, the department of conservation is the oldest fine arts conservation treatment, research, and training facility in the United States. The Center specializes in the conservation of works of art on paper, paintings, sculpture, decorative objects, and historic and archaeological artifacts. While the Center serves the Harvard University Art Museums, its clients encompass a range of institutions, including historical societies, regional or specialized museums, archives, libraries, and historical sites. The Center is also a training and teaching facility, for advanced-level conservation, art history students at Harvard University, museum trainees, and professionals already working in the field. As an outgrowth of these activities, the Center regularly conducts and publishes the results of research in conservation and art history. Conservation training at Harvard University was formalized in 1972 with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts.
