Sweden as a Great Power S weden was geogaphically established as a Great Power during a period of 100 years. It may basically be divided into three sequences; In the 1560´s the northern Baltic Region was incorporated; During the former part of the 17th century parts of northern Germany and more of the Baltic region became Swedish; During the 1650´s the southern most landscapes of proper Sweden was obtained from the Danish Kingdom.
Sweden as a Great Power reached its territorial peak in 1658. T he future of Sweden as a Great Power depended on the possibilities of external financing. To achieve this goal Sweden strived to gain control over the Baltic sea in order to control the trade. In this context a strong navy was of fundamental importance.

Peter Rowley-Conwy likes animal bones, plant remains, hunter-gatherers and early agriculturalists, and the history of archaeology. He welcomes research students working in these and related areas. See below for a list of his current and recent students and their topics. He is particularly keen on the archaeology of the pig, and has recently obtained an AHRB award which will bring UMBERTO ALBARELLA to Durham for four years (starting on 1 November 2000) to study pig domestication and management in various parts of the world. He has also sponsored the Wellcome Research Fellowship of Dr. KEITH DOBNEY , who is in Durham for three years from 1 August 2000 to examine other aspects of pig hunting and management. The presence of three serious pig fanciers is turning Durham into a major centre of porcine excellence. PR-C's own pig research involves determining the season of hunting by looking at tooth eruption and bone growth, and the detection of domestication. He is at the moment heavily involved in two areas: the Baltic, including the major sites of Ringkloster (Denmark) and Ajvide (on the Swedish island of Gotland); and the Russian Far East, including the major sites of Peschany 1 and Zaisanovka 2 (near Vladivostok). Current publications include:

BSP Newsletter No. 98:2:p04 To the Reader Maritime Archaeology in the Baltic. Geological Background: In many ways the Baltic area is unique in an archaeological sense. The basis is found in nature. Although there are great differences in the quaternary geology between roughly the north and the south there are indeed some factors which are shared by all parts of the Baltic. Another important difference concerns the waterfront zones. In Finland and most of Sweden they consist mainly of constant features such as rocks and boulders, and in the south -Denmark, Germany, Poland and to some extent Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, sedimentary action is dominant. Thus the coasts are certainly transformed by natural factors in both main areas, but in different ways: One by way of land uplift, the other by wave erosion (abrasion) and replacement/ build up. Internationally a unique factor would also be the archipelagos with large numbers of continuous small rock island chains which litter the coasts at several places. The archipelagos of Stockholm, the Åland islands and south western Finland are justly considered famous. But there are others as well in the baltic. All of them have been settled or are still settled as an important part of Baltic Maritime culture, based on the exploitation of the natural sources of the Baltic Sea. As a lonely and just possible parallel the Hudson Bay skerries of Canada could be cites, but they are different in character, uninhabited and almost totally sub arctic.

Preface
On April 11-16 1997 a second international archaeological conference devoted to contacts between the Balts and their neighbours was held at Palanga: The Balts and their neighbours in the Baltic region. 400-800. East-West contacts . Pro-ceedings from the first conference in this series which examined regional relations in the Viking Age were published in 1997. This volume provoked considerable interest and achieved some reclaim overseas for the up-to-date relevance of its articles which were published in English and German. The Palanga Conference, like its predecessor in Nida, was organised by the Lithuanian Institute of History (Vilnius) and the Centre for West Lithuanian and Prussian History (Klaip"da). Delegates took part from all the Baltic countries (except Estonia and the Russian Federation) and France. Twenty papers were presented to lively discussion. Delegates were taken around various Curonian archaeological sites and familiarised with developments in the excavations at Palanga and the ‘Memelburg’ in Klaip"da. Financial support was provided by the Lithuanian state scholarship and studies Fund ( Lietuvos valstybinis mokslo ir studijø  fondas ) and the Cultural Department of Klaipëda City Council.

    The megalithic tombs of southern Scandinavia, Germany, Netherland and parts of Poland exhibit virtually no decoration. The discovery of seven " circle with cross" symbols on a capstone of the megalithic tomb at Blengow in East Germany is, therefore, quite significant (Schacht 1995). The tombs belong to the farmers of the Neolithic Funnel Beaker culture and were constructed between 3600/3500 - 3200/3100 cal. BC.

    A useful tool to mitigate conflicts: Integrated planning of the coastal land areas and Baltic Sea waters The most appropriate way to address competing activities in the use of coastal land areas and Baltic Sea waters in the Baltic region is through an integrated coastal zone management (ICZM) process which brings the different sectors, stakeholders and the public together together, sets the priorities and implements the agreed decisions through the different sector legislation.
    An expert workshop on integrated planning and management of coastal and marine areas in the Baltic Sea Region (Stockholm, Sweden, from 30 September to 1 October 2002) which was jointly arranged by the Swedish Environment Protection Agency and Helsinki Commission, accepted the following principles for ICZM, and recalled that several of these principles are currently used in the work of HELCOM: - The ecosystem approach should be used when planning ICZM;
