Tiahuanaco, Bolivia
Tiahuanaco - also Tiwanaku - is in the Bolivian Andes lying 12,500 feet (over 2 miles) above sea-level. It is located some 15 miles from the shores of Lake Titicaca. As with many other sacred sites on the planet it remains an enigma allowing reseachers to speculate on its origins and purpose - then paralleling their conclusions with other ancient civilizations - on other major grids points pf the planet - left behind by unknown beings - surviving in time - with great stone markers which bear clues to humanity's creational story. Gods, temples, idols, metaphors - all clues in a puzzle humanity is unraveling at this time of conscious awakening. Tiahuanaco was the capital of the Pre-Inca Civilization. This could be the oldest city in the world, thought by some to be built by an extraterrestrial race who created the Nazca Lines as well. Strangely, Tiahuanacu was a seaport at one time, although the nearest body of water is Lake Titicaca. There are many theories on how this came to be - mostly lined to changes in sea level through the millennia. On the rock cliffs near the piers and warfs of the port area of the ruins are yellow-white calcareous deposits forming long, straight lines indicating pre-historic water levels. These ancient shorelines are strangely tilted, although once they must have been level. The surrounding area is covered with millions of fossilized sea-shells. It appears, from the tilting of the ancient shoreline striations and the abundant presence of fossilized oceanic flora and fauna, that a tremendous uplift of land has taken place sometime in the ancient past. Geologists estimate that this happened roughly around 100 million years ago.

A. Education Primary education is nominally free and compulsory for children between the ages of 6 and 14. However, the public schools, although increasing in number, do not meet the needs of Bolivia. The country's literacy rate is 86 percent. In 1996 almost all children were enrolled in primary schools. Only 40 percent of secondary school-aged children attended school. Enrollment in institutions of higher education was 24 percent. Bolivia has ten universities: in Sucre, La Paz (two), Cochabamba, Llallagua, Oruro, Potosí, Santa Cruz, Tarija, and Trinidad. San Francisco Xavier University (1624), in Sucre, is one of the oldest in the Americas. The University of San Andrés (1830), in La Paz, is the largest university in Bolivia, with a student enrollment of about 37,000. B. Culture

History
Civilization in the Bolivian Andes is thought to stretch back some 21,000 years. The most influential Pre-Columbian cultures were the Tiahuanaco, who were based around Lake Titicaca and who ruled the region between 600-1200 AD, and the Incas, who headed a vast empire which comprised most of Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador and northern Chile. Bolivia's territory had always been coveted by its neighbors, encompassing as it did over 2 million square kilometers (780,000 sq mi). Chile's desire for more land first bore fruit in the War of the Pacific, which it fought with Bolivia between 1879 and 1884. Chile triumphed, securing 850km (527mi) of coastline and robbing Bolivia of the port of Antofagasta, leaving the country landlocked. Soon after, Peru, Brazil and Argentina also began hacking away at Bolivia's borders. In 1932, a border dispute with Paraguay in the Chaco region over oil deposits stripped Bolivia of further land. The ensuing Chaco War (1932-35) also served to foment civil unrest within the country, promulgating reformist associations and leading to a series of coups by reform-minded military leaders. Bolivia has now become the world's second-largest exporter, after Colombia, of cocaine, which has alienated the USA, Bolivia's main source of aid. Bolivia is currently vying to strengthen its regional links and is a supporter of a South American common market. While inflation has been reduced to around 7% annually, the country's history of hyperinflation still deters overseas investors. Bolivia's main structural problem is the huge gulf between the world of 20th-century business and the life of the majority of Bolivians, who remain subsistent peasants.

Landlocked Bolivia is the Tibet of the Americas - the highest and most isolated of the Latin American republics. It is also the most indigenous country on the continent, with more than 50% of the population maintaining traditional values and beliefs. Bolivia may be one of the poorest countries in South America, but its cultural wealth, the mindblowing Andean and Tropical Forest landscapes and the remnants of mysterious
ancient civilizations make it the richest and most exciting destination for adventurous and independent travelers.

The Bolivia flag contains the state coat of arms. The nine stars on the shield stand for the nine departments that the country is divided into. An Andean condor is on top of the shield.
