Human Resources Family Issues It is almost impossible for small business owners to separate the business from personal life. You can cope with the sometimes unwanted commingling by learning how others approach this topic. Let’s start with the positives - tax benefits. Hiring your spouse can save you some taxes. If you are a sole proprietor, a spousal employment agreement can allow you to deduct 100% of medical insurance premiums, instead of getting only 45% off income taxes and nothing off self-employment taxes. Child care credits may become available via spousal employment in some cases that might not otherwise be available. Talk to your tax advisor about all the fringe benefits possible by hiring your spouse. If you are a corporation, you can deduct your vice president / spouse’s travel expenses on business trips. Sole proprietors also have a unique relationship with their minor kids. You can hire your kids under age 18 and pay no payroll taxes. If you keep their wages low enough, they will pay no income taxes, and you can still claim them on your return. In addition, they may qualify under some fringe benefits plans. You must file the quarterly form 941 with the IRS and the annual W-2 wage statements with Social Security, and must actually write out checks to pay the kids. The kids must also perform services for the business. Not only are your own kids exempt from the payroll taxes, but also from child labor laws. Note that this benefit is NOT available to kids who work for their parents’ corporation or partnership.

Now on to some of the drawbacks. Having your spouse spend so much time with you can cause problems. You will be working and living the business together all the time. Many psychologists suggest that having spouses not work together allows for a necessary mental break that helps keep a personal relationship healthy. You should discuss the pros and cons of working together under deadlines before you actually agree to be partners or coworkers. Hiring other relatives or - worse - letting other relatives become part owners of your business can create substantial headaches. While you may be trying to provide employment and income to help out a relative, the relative can cause hard feelings in your business. Then you will most likely find it hard to fire the relative, who usually feels that employment is an entitlement. If you go this route anyway, especially with relative investors, you should discuss the situation thoroughly (including conflict resolution ideas) in advance of agreeing to let a relative join the family firm. For relative investors, sign a written agreement detailing how they will be cashed out, and how the payout will be calculated and when it will be paid. By laying out the details in advance, you will prevent any unrealistic expectations or hard feelings several years from now.

64. THE DECLINE OF THE TRADITIONAL SMALL FAMILY RETAIL BUSINESS IN THAILAND
Families want to have more than just basic necessities and the children do notwant to stay in a small family business; they want professional / service
http://www.sbaer.uca.edu/Research/1998/ICSB/m003.htm
THE DECLINE OF THE TRADITIONAL SMALL FAMILY RETAIL BUSINESS IN THAILAND TERESA ELIZABETH DANA Nanyang Business School Nanyang Technological University Republic of Singapore ABSTRACT Not long ago, small local retailers were the heart of neighborhoods across Thailand. However, in recent years, there has been increasing pressure to emulate the material and technological progress of the industrialized world. As such, the nature of this country's retail sector is being transformed. This essay gives an overview of what may be the demise of the traditional small family retailing business in Thailand. INTRODUCTION At one time, firms could avoid the uncertainties and the inherent unknowns when competing in foreign markets, by simply staying small and local, thus refraining from expanding internationally. Today, with the reduction of trade barriers, even the small local business is threatened by international competitors penetrating formerly protected domestic markets (Dana and Etemad, 1994). The effects of globalization run far deeper than the physical structures that are being set up by multinationals all over the world. In fact, such effects are changing the nature of business in many countries and as a result, social values are being highly influenced. The purpose of this essay is to demonstrate the impact that the influential forces of modernization are having on traditional small-scale family-run retailers in Thailand. METHODOLOGY The dynamism necessary for this study required a first hand view and experience of living the retail phenomenon in Thailand. Traffic congestion is a real time consideration when doing field research and acquiring any type of information in this country, either verbally or in writing, takes time, as the development of a personal relationship is essential. Although Thais ask considerable quantities of questions, they will often ignore many questions asked directly to them, by pretending that they do not understand what is being requested. Not knowing an answer would imply losing face, an extremely undesirable situation for any Thai. Nonetheless, bank employees, retail administrators and students at Thammasat University in particular were quite cooperative. The research center at the Thai Farmers Bank contributed greatly.

Business Valuations for Estate and Succession Planning
The IRS allows businesses to use deductions for marketability, lack of control, key person or thin management, restrictive agreements, and others. We monitor these IRS regulations in the business valuation arena to be sure that our valuation engagements result in the most appropriate and up to date valuation under current law.
When your estate planning evolves beyond the living trust into family limited partnerships or if you or your client has a small business, a business valuation with proper discounts enables a transfer ownership with the least tax liability.
A forensic accountant trained in business valuation techniques along with current IRS regulations on available discounts will arrive at the most accurate value for your estate plan. When gifting of partial interests is contemplated, an accurate value is essential to proper reporting and planning.
A forensic accountant will arrive at a more proper value than a normal CPA because the forensic accountant has more experience in normalization of income. Forensic accountants are used to evaluating a company from an adverse standpoint. Typically clients hire forensic accountants to get information from management that management does not want to disclose. This exercise gives the forensic accountant experience in evaluating necessary and unnecessary expenditures.

A Small Family Business
Calhoun's 1995 season concluded with the regional premiere of Alan Ayckbourn's A SMALL FAMILY BUSINESS. A hilarious yet troubling satire on modern British morality, Calhoun adapted the play to the U.S. and set it in Memphis. Always one of theatre's most innovative playwrights, Ayckbourn was in one of his darker moods with this thought-provoking masterpiece. Ayckbourn's set enabled the action to take place simultaneously in up to four different locations, concluding with a violent yet humorous ending that leaves audience members questioning many of their values. The play was presented in proscenium in the Black Box and given a six-show July run.

Saving The Family Home Bankruptcy need not mean losing the family home
In bankruptcy, a person may expect to keep normal household goods and personal belongings and, possibly, a vehicle of minimal value. If, however, the bankrupt person owns any single item worth in excess of around £500 (such as a piano, collection of rare books or records, a piece of antique furniture or a painting), then the Official Receiver or Trustee will dispose of it, for the benefit of creditors.
Tools of the trade and equipment are classed as exempt property. For instance, a plumber would be allowed to keep his hand tools, a baker could expect to keep his oven, a taxi driver his taxi. If a vehicle is necessary to enable a bankrupt person to continue his trade, then that may also be classed as exempt property. However, a person running a business hiring, for instance, sun beds or wedding dresses, could not be expected to hold onto the sun beds or dresses as they would be considered 'stock' and not tools of the trade.
Do nothing and lose the family home
In most bankruptcies, however, the main asset is the bankrupt person's home, whether this is solely owned or in joint ownership. There is considerable confusion about the treatment of a home in bankruptcy, although in practice the methods of dealing with such a property are fairly straightforward.

small business succession
25% of senior generation family business shareholders have not completed any estate planning other than writing a will; 81% want the business to stay in the family; and 20% are not confident of the next generation’s commitment to their business. (Arthur Andersen/ MassMututal, 1997)So how about you? You've put a lot of time and effort into your company so establishing a succession plan is vital. Dr. Northington, Ph.D., delayed plans to begin his career as a counseling psychologist when, in 1980, he returned to Tucson to manage his family's construction-related business. His father had died suddenly, with no clear succession plans, and his mother had little knowledge of the business. So began Dr. Northington's unexpected 14 year education in managing a family-owned business and an opportunity to apply a formal education in psychology to the challenges of working with family members. In 1989, after his family business was sold, Dr. Northington founded Northington Ph.D. to assist individuals with career planning and life changes. Soon after, he developed Family Business Solutions as a major division of his practice. Dr. Northington guides clients in all stages of family business operations, from making the decision to start a business to planning for retirement.

small business transition of ownership
Small business transition of ownership can be very complicated. The best time to start thinking about your exit strategy is now, even if it might be a long time before you actually want to transition out of your business. Time will allow you to consult with professionals and put your plan in place, and you can optimize your chances of getting the most financial and personal satisfaction from the results. Time will also allow you to decide the right successor. Choosing the right successor is an outcome of hard work evaluating family member candidates or outside talent. No one should be a shoo-in without experiencing the rigorous assessment for readiness and an educational plan developed to get your choice ready to take over without your assistance. In 1989, after his family business was sold, Dr. Northington founded Northington Ph.D. to assist individuals with career planning and life changes. Soon after, he developed Family Business Solutions as a major division of his practice.

The balancing act between holding down a full time job and starting a part-time Family Business isn't easy, but it can be done - if you follow some simple rules. Talk to the Family:
(1) It is essential for you have their support before starting. Discuss the idea with them and explain the risk and pressures it will create, besides the satisfaction, profitability and accumulation of Family Wealth. Give Family Members Paid Tasks:
(2) . The best way to involve them is to make them part of the Venture with a guaranteed Income with corresponding responsibility. If there is any substantial conflict at this point the project is either doomed or will prove to be a burden rather than a joy. Be a Time Manager.
(3) Take advantage of every minute. Use lunch hours and free time to work on the Business. As anyone who has gone down this challenging road will say "the harder I work the luckier I gets".
