C HILD A BUSE:
S TATISTICS, R ESEARCH, AND R ESOURCES By Jim Hopper, Ph.D.
(last revised 2/7/2003) I am a researcher and therapist with a doctorate (Ph.D.) in clinical psychology. I have conducted survey research on rates of child abuse. I have also studied the lasting effects of child abuse - initially the psychological and behavioral effects in men, more recently the effects on memory and biology. I am a licensed clinical psychologist, and for thirteen years I have been a therapist to men and women abused in childhood, providing individual and group treatment. In my work as a Research Associate at the Boston University School of Medicine and The Trauma Center in Brookline, Massachusetts, I investigate the effects of child abuse and other traumas on people who have been diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). My main areas of interest are the characteristics of traumatic memories, effects of trauma on biological systems involved in emotion regulation, and how effective biological and psychological treatments may not only reduce symptoms but alter biology. If you are interested in my professional services , which include psychotherapy, talks, workshops, and consultations, please visit that page.

KIDS' STORIES
FOR PARENTS ... EVENTS You are visitor: Your Comments, Questions and Suggestions are Invited! Time to Support Children Today By Bob Cooper Executive Director NBA Tennyson Center for Children at Colorado Christian Home I am dismayed that in times of economic strength children are usually placed at the end of the line by our governmental leaders and in times of economic stress the children move to the front of that same line as cuts are being contemplated. Our recent history right here in Colorado confirms this. Colorado's current budget crisis has resulted in no increase in rates of reimbursement to Tennyson Center for Children for serving Colorado's most troubled children. This means that when combined with similar neglect of children in budget years since 1997, Tennyson Center for Children receives about 6% more than we did in 1996. I think you all know that the costs in virtually any industry you look at have increased more than 6% in 7 years! Fortunately for the children we serve, we have you! Without your financial support the children would not be getting the education and treatment they need and deserve, and their families would be struggling along in the same destructive patterns that result in abuse and neglect.

Our Endangered Species
A Hard Look At How We Treat Children by Andrew Vachss
Originally published in Parade Magazine , March 29, 1998
One distinguishing characteristic of highly evolved species is a long period of postnatal helplessness, when offspring are not able to fend for themselves. Another characteristic is pack behavior, a collectiveness which requires that all activity be geared to the ultimate survival of the group. Among other mammals, nonprotective parents are considered defective by other pack members. Not only will they decrease the pack's numbers through direct attacks on their own young, but they also cannot be relied upon to guard the offspring of others while pack members forage, hunt or gather. And so they are expelled. Likewise, predators within a species are not tolerated. They are banished, avoided or killed. These are not moral judgements; they are biologically driven and, among all species but our own, compelling. photo from Cummins/FPG
Wolves may be predators, but they are biologically driven to protect the young within their pack. To survive, our human pack, the family, must make protecting our own a priority.
Instead of blaming the "destruction of the family" for every social ill and evil, we need to face the fact that this is a self-inflicted wound. The "family" is
