Men helping to end violence against women and girls
Violent crimes committed against women and girls - like domestic violence, sexual assault and trafficking - continue to be pervasive in Australia and around the world. Violence against women and girls affects everyone in the community - including men and boys. Men's lives are personally affected if their girlfriends, wives, daughters, mothers, grandmothers or sisters experience violence or the threat of violence. Harmful attitudes and beliefs in the community are an important part of the problem. Helping to tackle these will help build a community that is safer for women and girls. Men can play a significant role here. Click here to view Statement from Men Against Sexual Assault The majority of men do not condone the use of physical or sexual violence against women and want to help reduce the violence. There are many ways that men in the community and business sectors can play a role to stop violence against women and girls. Some of these are listed below.

Domestic violence ... are you a victim?
Violence in the home is a crime we are all becoming more aware of each year. In the UK a quarter of all reported violent crimes are domestic. In the US the estimate of the number ranges from 960,000 incidents of violence against a current or former partner to four million each year. But domestic violence is also a world-wide problem. What is violence - or abuse? It is about power, and this can be about controlling a partner by either physical or emotional abuse. It is rarely a one-off event. There are also many different forms of abuse, and physical attack is only one of them. Perhaps most of us think of a black eye or broken arm, but sex can be used as a way of dominating a partner. So can ridicule. So can control of family finance. So, too, can shouting and screaming. Does your partner accuse you of all manner of ‘crimes’? These may even be everyday events, such as looking out of the car window to look at other men or talking for too long to friends and family on the telephone! Jealousy is a formidable spur for many attacks. Do you feel under threat of violence? Have you been on the receiving end of a violent attack? Do you have to ‘account’ for time spent away from home? Does emotional or verbal abuse play a part in your relationship?

IN THE UNITED STATES
MURDER . Every day four women die in this country as a result of domestic violence, the euphemism for murders and assaults by husbands and boyfriends. That's approximately 1,400 women a year, according to the FBI. The number of women who have been murdered by their intimate partners is greater than the number of soldiers killed in the Vietnam War. BATTERING . Although only 572,000 reports of assault by intimates are officially reported to federal officials each year, the most conservative estimates indicate two to four million women of all races and classes are battered each year. At least 170,000 of those violent incidents are serious enough to require hospitalization, emergency room care or a doctor's attention. SEXUAL ASSAULT . Every year approximately 132,000 women report that they have been victims of rape or attempted rape, and more than half of them knew their attackers. It's estimated that two to six times that many women are raped, but do not report it. Every year 1.2 million women are forcibly raped by their current or former male partners, some more than once. THE TARGETS . Women are 10 times more likely than men to be victimized by an intimate. Young women, women who are separated, divorced or single, low- income women and African-American women are disproportionately victims of assault and rape. Domestic violence rates are five times higher among families below poverty levels, and severe spouse abuse is twice as likely to be committed by unemployed men as by those working full time. Violent attacks on lesbians and gay men have become two to three times more common than they were prior to 1988.

This web site is not about relationship problems. Many men are in pain because of problems in their relationship with a woman partner. Fortunately there are many resources in our community for those men - phone support services, counsellors, therapists, drop-in centres, and social service agencies. We encourage men to seek help. There are a small number of men who are victims of domestic violence. They are entitled to be safe and free of abuse. Our agency provides crisisline and call out services for male victims of domestic violence (usually after a police response). This web site is about stopping the violence and fear created when men abuse their partners and families in private.

Would you like support from other men who have been affected?
Are you a Dad concerned about your daughters?
Whether you're a survivor of sexual assault or abuse...Or whether the sexual assault or abuse of a mother, sister, girlfriend, or other loved one has affected you...
We know the pain, the anger, and the confusion that sexual violence causes.
Mainely Men Against Violence and Sexism is here to help men help each other: To end the violence that permeates our culture, and to support one another in that work.
We men need to get involved in ending rape, sexual assault, and other forms of abuse. We as men perpetrate the vast majority (95%) of the assaults, and yet the topic is usually framed as a "Women's Issue." We want to make it very clear that we men must get involved because we are involved. We are perpetrators, survivors, and friends of survivors, and need to get involved. We have grand-mothers, mothers, sisters, cousins, nieces, wives, girlfriends, daughters, grand daughters and others who have or may become the subject of abuse. This site will show you HOW you can get involved in working to end the violence they are subject to, everyday. MMAVS was formed with the belief that it's up to the "everyday" individual to help end the everyday violence that is ingrained into our culture. * ACCORDING TO THE FBI, A WOMEN IS BEATEN EVERY [fill in the blank] SECONDS.
First, the FBI does not calculate, tabulate, or track data on domestic violence. The FBI once did estimate that a women is beaten every 15 seconds, but they derived this estimate from Murray Straus, Richard J. Gelles, and Suzanne K. Steinmetz's book, Behind Closed Doors: Violence in the American Family Various other fact sheets list various other number of seconds. The number of seconds depends on the study (if there actually was one) and how violence was defined. For example, some versions of this factoid state that a women is beaten every 9 seconds and cite a study done by the Commonwealth Fund in July, 1993. The Commonwealth Fund study used the same measure as was used by Straus and his colleagues. Unlike Straus and his colleagues who defined "abuse" as acts of violence that were likely to cause and injury, the Commonwealth Fund defined "abuse" as every thing from pushing, shoving, and slapping to using a gun or knife.
* THERE ARE FOUR MILLION WOMEN BEATEN AND ABUSED EACH YEAR.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE n :
The intentional emotional and/or physical abuse by a spouse, ex-spouse, boyfriend/girlfriend, ex-boyfriend/ex-girlfriend, or date. Table of Contents Section 1: Why do people stay in abusive relationships? A person looking at an abusive relationship from the outside tends to ask one major question: why does he/she stay? Although the idea of walking away from a relationship seems easy enough, it isn’t for a victim of domestic violence. Here are a few common reasons that victims of domestic violence stay. FEAR - Fear is a common emotion expressed in an abusive relationship. If attempts are made to remove themselves from that situation, the retaliation from their abuser can be horrible. So, instead of trying to change things and risk being hurt more, the only option left is to stay. ISOLATION - An important tactic used by an abuser is isolation. Turning the victim against their friends and/or family makes them an easier target. If the victim has no one to turn to for help, then their only option is to stay.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE:
NOT AN EVEN PLAYING FIELD
By Richard J. Gelles

The highly publicized O.J. Simpson case has spawned a flurry of stories in local, national, and international media, all focused on pieces of the domestic violence puzzle. In fact, coverage of the case has become the battleground on which one of the most controversial questions in the study of intimate violence is being debated: Is domestic abuse a "war against women" or are men battered just as much as women? We know that there are two to four million women battered in the United States each year. At least half these women fight back and defend themselves, and about 700 times last year, women killed their husbands or partners. My estimate is that there are about 100,000 battered men in the United States each year - a much smaller number than the two to four million battered women - but hardly trivial. Despite the fact that indeed, there are battered men too, it is misogynistic to paint the entire issue of domestic violence with a broad brush and make it appears as though men are victimized by their partners as much as women. It is not a simple case of simple numbers. The media, policy makers, and the public cannot simply ignore - or reduce to a parenthetical status the outcomes of violence, which leave more than 1,400 women dead each year and millions physically and/or psychologically scarred for life.

Activities of Men's Nonviolence Project:
History:
The Men's Nonviolence Project (MNP) was formerly known as the Battering Intervention and Prevention Project (BIPP). In early 2000, BIPP was reconceptualized as the Men's Nonviolence Project. As BIPP our primary activities were centered around service provision, that is, technical assistance, training and monitoring the local programs that worked with batterers. The MNP project still offers these services, but has widened its view to encompass the understanding that intervention groups for identified domestic violence offenders by themselves will never stop violence against women. In our first two years, we have made a good start on the work of addressing the social problem of men's violence. Here are some of our accomplishments:
